Screenplays for movies Prince never made - The Robert Johnson Story?

I remember a press release was sent out back in perhaps 86. It spoke of the movies Prince wanted to do. If you remember all of them please include it in this thread.

I recall Graffiti Bridge, The Robert Johnson Story, The Dawn? and others.

What I am wondering, is have screen plays for any of these movies ever surfaced? I would particulary be interested in the Robert Johnson Story. Whose book was being use to write the story? How far did Prince get with this project and why was it abandonded? I actually think Prince would have been perfect to play Robert Johnson if that's what his intent was. It would fit him perfect. Of course now Prince is to old to play a man who died when he was only 27.

Also, I wonder how many unreleased Robert Johnson songs Prince recorded?

For those who don't know who Robert Johnson was please go here:

Actually, that press release was sent out in 1989 wink It listed four movies that were in development:

Graffiti Bridge

The Dawn---described as a "street-oriented sequel to 'Graffiti Bridge".

The Dark Side Of The Moon---a documentary on Prince's career

The Robert Johnson Story

With director Al Magnoli as his manager, the plan was for Prince to focus on making movies in the 90s.The two of them created a film company called Paisley Park Films.Unfortunately, the first of these films,'Graffiti Bridge',flopped big time and the remaining movies were never made.

I do remember (in 86 i think) that there was a 900 line that (who's add was something like "doe's it look like rain?") that had news on it, that had a story of a movie prince wanted to make AFTER cherry moon, that was based on the dirty mind time period. Which went along well with something (from memory) he said in the 85 rolling Stone Interview. That his band was not happy as they were not convinced of his "prince's" vision for greatness.

of course the Idea for "the Dawn" has been bouncing around for some time as well.

The Second Coming

The Second Coming was planned to be a documentary film and live album from Prince's Controversy tour in 1981. The tour was professionally filmed but the project was abandoned, likely due to Prince's schedule producing The Time and Vanity 6. The title comes from a prerecorded a cappella intro to the tour, immediately preceding the song "Uptown".

it also had a minimal narrative (but more than SOTT). There are some stills from some of the filming floating around out there. I think some of it was filmed at Prince's house maybe the one on France?

did prince have a step ladder? (maybe that is what the song "the ladder" is really about? Something to stand on so he can kiss Vanity? ....lol short jokes are so lame)

yeah it was filmed by Kevin Smith, he talks about it twice in 2 different speaking engagements. One is called something like an evening with Kevin Smith.

3121-there were reports that he made a movie or film. This was fed by the 3121 cd being labeled "3121-the music".

there was also "the undertaker" which like SOTT had some "live" songs and a thin narrative.

Yep. If I recall, it was a story in a Panama newspaper about Liza Hernandez/Liza Lena working with Prince and it said something like "They become friends after filming the 3121 movie together" or words to that effect.

I'd love to see that.

but that could just be a music video. but that with the "3121 the music" on the cd it could be true. And it would be consistent with prince do do something and not finish it.

Um... why?? He looks nothing like him, sounds nothing like him, plays nothing like him... Robert Johnson's story, such that is known, deserves better, imo.

ALso "the second comming"

Prince's Minneapolis gig at the Met Center on March 7th '82 was filmed by Chuck Statler, who had worked on a video of "Cool" for The Time.

Statler filmed pre concert footage of an interview with Prince and Jon Bream. The interview was a set up, with the intention of providing humorous "vignettes" for the film.

Prince later viewed Slatlers concert footage and decided that he wanted to develop the project into a drama documentary.

Prince came up with the idea of filming footage to tie the songs together. Footage was shot at Prince's house (no mention of France) with Susan Moonsie and an unidetified woman both in their underwear.

Statler discovered that it was very difficult working with Prince who wanted to re-shoot scenes over and over with no communication between Prince and the crew.

The project was ditched and Prince professed not to like any of the footage anyway.

^^This info from The Vault book.

I remember something like this too in either DMSR or Possessed. it was something with the camera viewing his feet then it will follow Prince's hand trailing up his leg to his mid section, but Prince didn't like how the camera ppl were doing it or whatver.

Then to the Vanity thing, they were on a bed wearing dog collars and chains. That's all from the top of my head so far

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

A lot of people want to make Robert Johnson's movie, but it's a pretty sketchy story.

I am wondering with Warner Music Archives going through their boxes, if there's going to be any Robert Johnson finds, because they had owned Vocalion on and off in the 30s and 40s.

I also read in D.M.S.R. and Possessed that he wanted to make a movie called the Coco Boys about two opposing groups (To be played by Mazarati and Tony Le Mans) in late 1986/87 but he lost interest when he disbanded the revolution and Brown Mark left as well. It sounds like a precursor to Graffiti Bridge, except Prince was only going to direct and produce and actually not star in it. He must have had some interest in this idea for a while as he gave a couple of songs to country artists (?????) under the pseudonym Joey Coco.

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

When I first heard about this project,I thought it would be interesting lol Prince playing a character other than himself. Not sure if he could have pulled it off, though.

it wasd around that time the recording of the Delta Blues version of Alphabet St. came about. Maybe he was getting into his Robert Johnson mode. I also recall a news story back then about him buying the rights to Milos Forman's classic film "Loves of a Blonde". Too bad Graffitti Bridge sucked so much!

Yep,I heard about that project. It seems that in the 80s he had alot of ideas for movies. He even wanted to make a movie based on the 'Camille' alter ego.In 1985,I heard about a rumored film project called "Prince of Darkness and the Morning Star" but this may have been an early title for 'Under The Cherry Moon'.

I think I read that the 3 song suite of "Girl O' My Dreams/Can't Stop This Feeling I Got/We Can Funk was for the coco musical idea. Like a long continuous choreographed sequence of three tunes.

1) you may be correct about the Graffiti Bridege thing, it was also at one point a Time movie with out Prince in it.

2) He gave "you're my love" to Kenny Rodgers.

I meant Prince recording his own song in that retro aesthetic for fun. For some reason, I don't think that's a real demo.
