Trey's playing isn't necessarily as neat and polished as Prince's, but his guitar vocabulary is second to practically no one.

Well, in this "top ten greatest guitarist ever" list that is constituted by internet votes worldwide,

Prince is number 10 and Trey is not even mentioned......

http://www.the-top-tens.c...s-ever.asp

falloff Sorry, but that list is a joke. Jeff Beck is not even on it but the sloppy Kirk Hammett is.

you noticed the quotes?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

when Trey Anastasio can go from a blistering guitar to piano to bass with hardly skipping a beat... then we can talk.

But we are speaking strictly about their skills as a guitarist, piano and bass have nothing to do with this discussion.

I'm definitely not a Phish fan and I haven't heard much of their music but it is obvious that Anastasio is a very talented guitarist and I suspect that he can play things that Prince can't or would never think of playing. Of course, the reverse is probably also true. It's definitely fair to say that they are very different players but if we are talking about technical ability Anastasio is probably the better of the two.

It always amuses me how close-minded some Prince fans can be when it comes to acknowledging the fact that Prince is not the best at everything. As a multi-instrumentalist he is probably near the top but on individual instruments I don't think he is near the best on any of them.

Incidentally, being "the best" is not necessarily all that it's cracked up to be. There are some musicians who are technically flawless on their instruments but I get no joy from listening to them play. For me it is much more important that I feel what the musician is playing and Prince gives me plenty of that which means much more to me than him being "the best" guitar player.

Trey is a slamming guitarist but I agree with everything rialb posted. Well said.

They're 2 totally different guitarists from 2 totally different planets.

I do agree with most of what your saying here, but Prince is for sure near the best on guitar...even his fellow musicians in music today agree to this...plus he's not far behind on bass guitar.

it is fair to point out that Prince has given up 1000s of hours to hone his skills on other instruments.

I'm definitely not a Phish fan and I haven't heard much of their music but it is obvious that Anastasio is a very talented guitarist and I suspect that he can play things that Prince can't or would never think of playing. could be.

that is what I said, so were you calling yourself names too?

you are 100% being technically flawless is not the same as being the best.
