Of course it was subjective: IT WAS ONE MAN'S OPINION.

Whatever.

A good review is based on objective criteria and determined categories.

The determined category was his top 10 Prince songs. He doesn't need to be any more objective about his choices than you or I do.

You kids born in the 90s, you have no idea how spectacular the dude really was, compared to everything else that was coming out smile

I was born in 1991, and my prince collections starts with For You and ends with the Symbol album

of 1992.. (unreleased, unfinished, demo, live stuff included). wink

I can imagine that certainly since The Sumbol Album wasn;t thet great but you might really like much of his 94-95 output, which really is quite good in retrospect. after that I agree, it;s definately less interesting

  1. "Baby I'm a Star" (Live from Landover, Maryland,Purple Rain tour) 1984

His "James Brown on The T.A.M.I. Show doing 'Night Train' " moment. He's the best bandleader of his generation — and if I ever need to prove that to someone, this is my surefire crash course.

  2. "The Bird" (Rehearsal demo) 1983

I'm certain Prince would be chagrined by this list of hard-to-find classics (in his eyes: illegal), but practicing and absorbing this song has shaped many a musician's life, including mine — it was all the college I needed. He builds a groove here from the ground up, note by note. This one shows that even the smallest detail is crucial to a song.

So, what boots are these on? I'm not sure I've even heard of a Landover Maryland PR tour being available. Also, I have the new "Bird Rehearsal" boot that came out recently. Is that what he's talking about y'think?

Great list, too! True Prince fan, that ?uestlove.

Pretentious list from someone who is obviously too much of a poser to acknowledge any of Prince's less critically acclaimed work.

Yeah. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting an article about The Bird rehearsal. Or Movie Star. Or Cloreen Bacon Skin. I mean, everyone is talking about them.

If that's how you want to take it, go right ahead, but trust that "impressed" isn't the right word.

What about Batman ?

A solid album with killer tracks: Electric Chair, Batdance, The Future..

only 3 good/bad songs imo : Trust, Lemon Crush and...Arms of Orion feeling ill

Same goes 4 D&P and TGE, but that's just my opinion.

Lemon Crush is a masterpiece what u talkin bout Willis?

I need to listen to the Batman album tonight.

I know its better than I give it credit for, but that was the beginning of the hip hop Prince...I know he wasnt rapping yet, but the vocal samples from the movie that are stretched all over the album just really bug me.

I usually use 88 as the GREATNESS cutoff point.

I still worshipped/supported, but he went downhill in my eyes after Lovesexy.

Im also a Wendy and Lisa freak, so...

D&P? Loved every track not touched by rap.

TGE? Close to the same. Musically it was very good.

blunt music She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies.... music blunt

"Baby I'm a Star" (Live from Landover, Maryland,Purple Rain tour) 1984

This is on the boot NPG-TV Channel 1 (Moonraker) and is taken from the promo video(s) for Baby I'm A Star and I Would Die 4 U.

"The Bird" (Rehearsal demo) 1983

This was on an early boot called 1999 Tour Rehearsals (Superfly), but is the same rehearsal as the recently released and much better presented The Bird Rehearsal (Free Boot Generation).

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Ohhhh. Well, I have those. I thought the BIAS one was from Atlanta. That would be my favorite, too, I think. at one point in the video, Mark, Wendy and Shelia are all headbanging in unison. It's totally exciting!

This is from page 5 of the new Rolling Stone:

Going Deep

The Playlist Issue started with an idea from ?uestlove of the Roots; we were asking him for a list of his favorite songs of all time, but he said he wanted to go deeper. "In my eyes, what defines a true artist is their filler," he said. "I happen to like Stevie Wonder songs that aren't hits.I can say the same for Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan." For this issue, he talked about killer Prince rarities and album cuts: "Prince's hits are like a red carpet that he lays out to lead you to the good stuff."

[img:$uid]http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae121/rmartin70/scan0004-1.jpg[/img:$uid]

The Playlist Issue also includes Bono on David Bowie, Patti Smith on Bob Dylan, Ozzy Osbourne on The Beatles, Mark Ronson on Stevie Wonder, Jack Johnson on Bob Marley, Chris Robinson on The Rolling Stones, Drake on Jimi Hendrix, LA Reid on Michael Jackson, and Alice Cooper on Pete Townsend just to name a few. It is a pretty cool issue.

I'd like to hear ?uestlove play The Ballad of Dorothy Parker.

Good list though, but I would have had to include a couple of hit's from the 90's.

Your correct,it was the b-side.

datdude said:

i think Tricky was the b-side to 777-9311. not 100% sure though, but its more of a tongue and cheek vamp with Morris Day goin' on about nothing to a psuedo-interviewer named "Grace". its the funky track over which it all takes place. the twin cousin to Irresistible & CBS which is why ?Love mentions it. its all about the funky drums on these three.

i like Quest's list. couple of surprises. great list tho

A good review is based on objective criteria and determined categories.

It's not a review, it's opinion, and there is no criteria to define personal subjectivity in that regard.
