I didn't understand that for a long time either. But now it seems that it might be how some individuals focus their attention on our Man.

It's a choice, imo, to either appreciate Prince's creative gifts or use time looking for insignificent errors, flaws or weirdness. You can pick him apart or enjoy and appreciate his numerous creative gifts and catalogues of amazing music. Simple really, I don't think he has any more faults than the rest of us, he's just in the limelight more which seems to make peeps want to manipulate, control and complain. I love him just the way he is though so when the negativity gets too rough, I turn away and go back to my origianl focus. =

What matters is that you found something different to like based on the music itself.

If we start judging art on the person and not the work, some of the most creative people in the world are pretty nutty in their private lives,and not all that likable. When you get older and hang with "artistic" types, you'll see what I mean. They don't have to be famous to be nutty.

"Pop" is a genre that's meant to be temporary and in the moment. Those type of albums rarely go high on the classic albums list.

It doesn't really matter how many fans an artist has, it matters if it had an impact on you. What other people listen to... don't even bother debating with them about it. They like what's popular and in the moment. And listen to it over and over. Then move on to something else, and destroy any possibility of liking the song ever again.

I think the next step would be tracking down the music that affected Prince, after you get into his back catalog.

mj was great n his category.singing,dancing,promoting himself.he was the king of pop.u can't place prince n a category because he has no boundries.he's more than pop. he's pop,jazz,rock,blues,r&b,new wave,funk,folk,gospel,metal.prince is music. prince giutar playing(priceless.) he plays several instruments.he writes compose,& produces all his music.I never seen mj play one instrument.Motown,Quincy jones,& top noch producers produced dam near all mj songs.theres so much depth 2 prince music. all there is 2 mj music is pop.

Prince sabotages his own reputation.

He's called a genius as much as anyone alive today, but his material has been so inconsistent that even when people want to like it they find it difficult to do so.

It is so hard to recommend a Prince album, because i know that while I might like it, my friends will like maybe 2 songs and think the rest are terrible, insane, stupid, girly, too simple, etc.

Cause he's an old man. Kids love other kids, preferrably 2 years older or something like that. Girls love fat girls becoming famous, showing it's possible even with love wheels. Etc. How he handled his career after the success of Purple Rain to be more precise. I'm sure the artists whose success you're comparing Prince's to have more than one huge selling album. MJ, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, all those considered "greats" are usually huge sellers while lesser selling artists like Prince and Bowie may be darlings with music critics aren't regarded as such by the mainstream.

Had Prince properly promoted ATWIAD (and maybe even changed some of the album), released better single choices and toured the U.S. with SOTT and gotten those albums to sell around the 6-10 million mark, not sign that absolutely ridiculous contract with warner in the 90's and not become a recluse until 2004 his media perception would be ENTIRELY different.

really ?....now i find this interesting.....i can fully understand someone loving prince and mj....but i cant get my head round how you can like mj more than prince if you are such a big prince follower?....mj was a great singer..good songwriter though not a great one...great dancer....hugely popular ....but if you have seen prince live soo many times and listened to all his music and understand his musicial talent across all genres of music...his amazing ability on most instruments that far outstrips mj talents...his songwriting which is far more diverse and stronger than mj's was...just as an all round artist...mj didnt compare to prince....i find it very interesting that someone who KNOWS how good prince is can prefer michael jackson ???...
