no, the internet does not BREED anything. the people who use it, do. the consumer ethos to which you refer was around long before the internet.
there is ample evidence of this, like the mentality behind the bootleg market, which is a human problem, not an internet problem.
just because the internet makes it easy for people to shift information and share information, does not mean it is the internets fault if UNETHICAL PEOPLE use it to suit their own selfish agendas.
if i bang my thumb with a hammer, am i going to be stupid enough to blame the hammer?
apparently, when it comes to the internet, some people are definitely stupid enough to blame their sore thumb on the tool they use, instead of the BRAIN using it.
i honestly dont care one bit if prince doesnt want to use the internet to SELL his music anymore. he obviously feels insulted by this environment and thats his prerogative.
but it'd be really great if he could just shut up about it, instead of continuing to pollute the press with his ignorant views on the subject. this too shall pass

Because Prince wouldn't have any kind of perspective on selling music via the internet?

I think this interview is absolutely brilliant! The questions are good and he gives very interesting and logic answers. I loved the part about him talking about his newest music, how close he is to it and how he knows that it's simply not that popular. It somehow makes it easier to listen to and trust his latest albums...

it was positive reading this...to hear his own voice. burning spear has a song called "mi gi dem" (what they want) in terms of music. so it is very humbling to hear Prince acknowledge that he plays songs that fans are familiar with and want to hear. how special also to hear him acknowledge hardcore fans who appreciate his releases.
as for the Internet, we have kindof reached a stage where most things can be gotten for free. like all other jobs, musicians need to be paid, so i understand where Prince is coming from.
Prince is definitely a unique human being, in a class of his own. i hope that he continues to enjoy his art and creation the way he is, and I for one always look forward to his new releases, the same way I did in the 80's.

I think Prince's newfound honesty/openness is very refreshing, both in this interview and the Peach and Black Podcast.
People here complain often about him playing mostly his old hits, but he is right in focussing on these songs in my opinion. Only the diehards will know his recent output, and will appreciate him playing these tracks. At most concerts Prince throws in a few nuggets for the hardcore fans anyway. Or throws an aftershow where he can play whatever he/ the hardcore fans want(s).
It is also good to notice he openly admits his new stuff not being as popular/exciting to other people as the old stuff, eventhough seemingly he loves all his output equally.
It makes him look more human and normal than I would have thought him to be before these two interviews. More realistic and down to earth in a way, and therefore more likable IMO.
Basically he does the concerts to make money and entertain the masses whilst having a good time himself, and he releases his new work for his diehard fans. I can only applaud this. And people bitching about him releasing his new work via newspapers etc. probably don't realise that it has become much harder to get your music released and be properly paid for it. Even for an artist of Prince's stature! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

That really touched me, too. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Wow it must be hard going thru life not being able to read and comprehend anything or maybe you read a diffrent interview.
People do pay a lot of money to hear the same old great music and they should get what they pay for people like you should stay home and listen to the so-called crap music from the last 10 years that you seemed so press for him to play at the concert.

Co-sign and well said. It is too bad that many orgers are so clueless about what is going on in the music industry and cannot see that Prince is making despite everything that is going on.

I dont think so,nothing against playin those old hits, but the mix could include more of his new music, which will grow to classics also ,but only if he plays them.there are lots of new tracks havin the same quality as the old hits.

I wish he would find some balance in this regard. There are tons of old songs worth revisiting, so he could spread the focus around a little bit. And if he believes he has a good new song, well--play it. People might like it.

I couldn't agree with you more. This was a mature kind of interview, where Prince is concerned and I enjoyed it. I too would love to hear more new songs mixed with the new but at least Prince isn't oblivious to the type of people who go to the shows and to me, that came out in an honest manner. [Edited 11/11/10 14:34pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

What is this 'volkskrant' ?
I think they just made the whole 'interview' up in an obvious desperate attempt to get more readers.
and what the hell is a newspaper anyway ?!!

I don't know if i realy should react top this. But de Volkskrant is a quality newspaper from the netherlands.
But apart from that: if any one would try to attract more readers, ana article about Prince won't do the trick. You would have to have a 'hot' person that appeals to more people than Prince does.

Well said. prince's wealth does not bar him from having his views on lost earnings. And at the end of the day the internet tho an amazing medium has devalued music. Everything is up for grabs. I agree with Prince-quite often the search and expectation are a huge part of the fun. Prince is right it is one big party where everyone is just one big homogenous mass. I'm sick of younger people banging on about certain music when you know damn well they coudn't give a toss-and when they get older will listen to the equivalent of Barry Manilow or Westlife. Easy come easy go
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think that is quite interesting. Prince usually waffles or gets a bit abstract politically-here is quite succinct and in my opinion pretty spot on-and he could be talking about the UK too
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
no, it hasnt. people have. the internet is essentially stupid. it just sits there connecting one end to another end and so on and so on. it has no power to devalue anything.
what people do with the internet is the source of the problem. not the net itself.
if we dont value music, that merely shows how shallow we've become. technology merely amplifies an already exisitng human condition.
as the old world gives way to the new, the global ego will lose its power. there will be no more artists demanding financial reward for their skills.
rewards will come, but not in response to demand or expectation. the universe owes nothing to anyone.
it was around long before us and will be long after us. what we do with our technology is up to us. this too shall pass

Werll yes-but it facilitates laziness. A child will be drawn to a McDonalds rather than a cooked meal-it's instinct. You are right that if we want to give in to that way of living it is not the internets fault. However a personal example I can think of is that in the UK i can't bear Tesco-a new one has opened up near me and I said I would never use it however the other night I did because it was the only place open. It is harder to hold onto principles when mush is right in front of you.

Thanks for the explanation but I wasn't serious
What I posted above is what some pathetic people were saying about the Peach & Black podcast about their chat with Prince - which covered pretty much the same topics and they were accused of making it up.
Yet when it comes from a Dutch newspaper ? Different story.
I just have to say I trust every word from the Peach & Black podcast whom I have been listening to for almost 2 years now, against some newspaper I have never heard of, in a different language, from a foreign country.
Stay cool
