Ten years ago, I would've thought you were nuts... if you tried telling me that I wouldn't have a Prince album months after it was released. The fact that I have not yet heard 20ten is crazy. This is Prince, my favorite. I never thought it would come to this! "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

So will you continue "being crazy" or will you let the net satisfy your curiousity? "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

Holy cow. Abe Froman is back on the org. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I couldn't be arsed to listen to Rich Friends, seeing as the only song from 20Ten I was remotely bothered about was Future Soul Song.

when fans bootleg his music, use his image and symbol without consent, trash him and his websites on the internet, what do you expect?
granted, that may have nothing to do with his recent business decisions, but i dont blame him for doing things his own way,
through media that gladly accepts him and his work, without all the harsh negativity and blatant disregard for his rights as an artist.
he made a choice to make his money independently from his fan-base. he got paid what he wanted, without all the gripes, he got his music into the hands of a lot of people, without having to listen to any disrespect,
and now he's doing a tour to support all that, to crowds who are enjoying themselves without complaint.
when he first hit it big as an artist, he sold records. people bootlegged his music. then he went on the net and tried releasing music there.
his internet endeavors invited all sorts of degrading criticism, violation of his rights, and an almost constant slew of harassment from all angles.
he retaliated legally on all counts and was critisized for doing so. he was called a 'tyrant', a 'small and pathetic man', a 'sheister and con-man',
and told repeatedly that his music 'sucks', is 'garbage', that his websites are 'hideous', and that 'all he cares about is money'.
he has every justifiable right to localize his music releases in whatever domain he likes and get paid with respect for his artistry.
he has every right to hold off on a US CD release until the mood and timing is right to co-incide with his upcoming shows.
he has every right to not have his CD in shops, every right to do as he pleases, every right to walk away from his fan-base, and every right to return to it when it pleases.
what he does with his music is the only aspect of his life in which he has any true freedom. let him have it. this too shall pass

you do realize, of course, that the release strategies for his last few albums actually PROMOTE bootlegging and illegal downloading, right?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
no, they dont promote bootlegging and downloading at all. the word 'promote' is a convenient word to use, as if he is somehow asking you to bootleg and download. he is not.
it is a convenient word which is used to avoid taking responsibility for the violation of his rights as an artist.
no fan has the exclusive right to violate his rights, his integrity, his livelihood or his artistry. ever.
if he doesnt want to jump on board with free music downloads, that is NOT an invitation to rip him anyway.
fans do not run prince's career. never have. never will. there is no justification for one man to be constantly subject to blatant violations and degradations of both his rights and integrity as an artist.
what his fans have done to him is wrong, not because he refuses to align with the future, but because his rights are disrespected.
i'm not saying his recent business decisions are directly because of the way his fans treat him, but i'd make a confident guess that it has been a contributing factor.
face up to it and take responsibility for the malicious and disrespectful violations that prince fans have directly engaged in, by independent choice.
there's no 'promote' about it. this too shall pass

I was going to wade through your usual inane blather, but I decided to just cut my losses and focus on the first line.
Yes, his release strategies for the last few albums absolutely does promote illegal downloading. They are limited releases in one store or in one part of the world and nowhere else. This promotes illegal bootlegging and downlaoding among his fanbase where those albums are not available.

well of course he does have that right to release to some and not others.
It certainly doesn't endear the artist to me that is for sure. I also have not heard the newest CD. I refuse to download it illegally. I guess that is my lost... right? But since it is not available for me to purchase, I guess you could say that is Prince's loss.
Seems like a lose lose situation to me. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Thank god I have a friend in the UK who hooks me up! Got me the 20ten. Thanks Muz! Love ya. He is my Prince guru, knows all the info.
Except when the next fing concerts are, or what city, or what venue, or how much, or what radio station. So I am fucked since i live in Montana and he wont even come my way. Maybe Seattle. But that means I still have to buy plane tickets, even if I do get lame ass cheap tickets or expensive over rated tickets. I hope P is doing this for donating to Harlem in NY and NJ and the rest wont be $750 and $500. What is this shit coming to? And he says bring the family! HOW?
Another fucked up thing is that the celebs are gonna get good seat, and probably not pay a dime for them!
But I do plan on bidding on the guitar, just to say that I did and go down in history. I think around 50k then 75k. It could go for 500k who knows. If I had that money to spend I would buy it!
Good luck to all you who get to see him. I will probably crap out since he cant post his tour dates like the rest of the entertainment industry. And here I thought I loved him! Have his tattoo, plates on car, stickers, two rooms in house filled floor to ceiling in memorabilia, but does it matter that I am a fan? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

who started it?
when was the very first instance where prince gave his fans the finger, entirely unprovoked?
when were his fans sitting round doing nothing illegal at all, and prince just decided to give them the finger?
we could say, 'well he deserves to be treated that way cuz thats karma for the music he has stolen from other people, the musicians he has ripped and credited himself with all the work, the disrespect with which he has treated many people throughtout his career, what goes around comes around and if he's too stupid to figure that out then what difference does it make what we do?'...
and we could say that and have half a valid point. but it would be totally beside the point.
everyone here knows there is no law stating that it is OK to bootleg his work, breach his copyrights, alter his artwork, use his image and likeness, without his consent, or slander him.
some might say he doesnt sell as many records as he could because he's been forced into a narrow corner of release methods, and he's been forced into that corner by his fans. forced to localize his releases and get paid up front, to ensure that 1. he receives proper payment and 2. his music gets into people's hands, in a legitimate way.
i will happily retract everything i've said if you can provide me one instance, the very first instance, where prince just decided, for no apparent good reason, for no good legal reason, to give his fans the finger.
this too shall pass | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
so do you believe it was ok for prince to sue his own fans for images that he didnt even own?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
i dont believe it was 'ok' for prince to 'sue' his fans for anything. he could just as easily have taken the michael jackson route and seen it all as one big compliment, and part of a much larger picture.
the point i'm making is about illegal activity and violations of his rights as an artist, and that it was always his right to retaliate. just as it is his right to choose how he wants his music released and how much he wants to get paid.
me personally? the whole copyright thing bores me shitless. the world of copyright has choked the life out of so much music its agonizing to contemplate.
the world of money and 'my rights', also, bores me shitless, but i'm not prince, and it obviously means a lot to him, both copyright, and his artistic integrity.
20ten is not in the shops? boo effing hoo. maybe it will be soon, but for now, he's been cornered into localizing his releases under his own absolute control. he gets paid for it, and respected for it.
thats just my opinion, plus, he likes trying new ways of doing things, and like i said before, i think the way his fans have treated him over the years, trying to justify their slander and illegal activities, has pushed him in the direction he is headed.
anyway, can you give me the very first instance where prince attacked his fan-base, for no good legal reason? what year was it? this too shall pass
