Actually, his fanbase was pretty loyal and rabid despite his early mishaps and even through more disastrous ones like Crystal Ball, the NPGMC, and LotusFlower's website. Prince's loyal fans (ie those who stuck around) that trade(d) bootleg material have never simply stolen from him and its naive to suggest that. Not to mention the fact that even if Prince were to release it and the fans already owned 8 copies, they'd now own a 9th.

re:promoting bootlegs
ok well sure there are "laws" for all sorts of things. funny thing is that people who follow the law do many illegal things with the law. people who break the law are sometimes doing good. as for bootlegs i find the whole debate absurd. when i was a kid i taped music off the radio for free. or taped music from my friends or taped music i had for my friends. that was how i heard about the music and became interested. record companies tried to gouge music fans by selling cds of supposed "higher" quality for almost double the price. they tried to put anti copying codes on the music so you couldnt copy it. now they gouge music fans by selling mp3s that are not only more expensive than the old 45 but sound like shit. now the record companies are all bankrupt and out of business. the fact is that all these rediculous efforts to prevent "fans from stealing music" have destroyed the music industry. people sharing copies or bootlegs were always the lifeblood of music promotion. bands like phish and the grateful dead made more money from touring from buzz garnered from people trading bootlegs than they ever did from their mediocre records. if those bands found a way to fine or jail people for bootlegs those bands would be dirt broke right now and likely unknown.
the only reason prince has any fan interest anymore is because of bootlegs. if all we got was his lame post wb output, he'd have washed up long ago. his newer music is not strong enuf to support his lifestyle. if he was smart he would sell his bootlegs himself. without bootlegs most people would not have heard his b sides or out takes .. in fact most people would think of him as much as say cyndi lauper or duran duran .. a fun 80s band but certainly not the musical genius prince is regarded as. without access to the depth of what prince brings there is no opportunity for prince.org types who are constantly analyzing and speculating and creating a buzz over live concerts and unreleased music. this BUZZ it what causes the few people who buy his new records to actually purchase the record. the record itself is mediocre at best and to be quite honest, is not worthy of payment. many bootleg collectors happily buy the same GOOD tracks over and over and over, whether from bootleg labels or prince himself. prince should appreciate that fans tape his shows and dig up outtakes and release them. its the only reason he can garner an advance on any new release or sell out a huge stadium. prince constantly depletes his returns the more he tries to stifle word of mouth and the file sharing promotion organism.
and people who wont listen to bootlegs are just programmed by record companies. there is nothing wrong with enjoying a live concert tape or hearing music prior to purchase via a copy, download, in a club or via your friends purchased copy. if the new music cd is good, people will not only buy it but encourage friends to buy it or even buy it as a gift for friends. if the music is bad people will just shelve it and wait for the next one. if they are forced to spend money on it they may not buy the next cd and will feel resentful at spending money on a subpar product and will likely send a lot of negative word of mouth around.

you make some valid points but i disagree with prince being considered a genius because of bootlegs. Other then maybe a few tracks, most of his best work has been released on official albums like Sign, 1999, Purple Rain, TGE etc. Thats why he is considered genius
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
i hear ya .. but when I think back to the 80's, even as a huge prince fan, he didn't have much more impact than the other 80's artists, in fact after kiss he really started to fade from superstar status quick. songs like sign o the times and if i were ur girlfriend were his best work but people don't know him for those songs, in fact i would say people are more familiar with cyndi laupers true colors or duran duran notorious, view to a kill, reflex, than they are with prince output beyond purple rain raspberry beret and kiss. even madonna had huge hits on songs far worse than sign era. my point being that some people caught on, bought the b-sides, time, vanity, sheila e etc.. bootlegs .. all that ... and prince, among fans, became described as such a super genius that the sentiment carried over to popular opinion. BUT that is not the case with other 80's artists. even michael jackson and madonna dont get described that way. most people see prince now as a super genius who has sucked for the last 20 years. but he still gets super genius status .. people dont buy prince records anymore more because of hits or because of the songs being good. they buy them hoping for some of that old super genius music. its all reputation.
why? not because of "lets go crazy" and "kiss" were sooooo good .. no, its because people dug deeper and were blown away and talked about it and even the casual listener was made aware that his genius went far beyond the hits. other bands had more hits at the time but faded to obscurity when the era ended.

I agree that to the casual listener he's more known for kiss and purple rain then for sign.
However make no mistake about it, Sign gave prince massive critical acclaim. He was repeatedly described as a genius for this album and infact this album is largely responsible for prince being described as a genius. I do agree that the b sides and unreleased tracks have kept fans intersted for years and still keep fans interested. I think P being described as a genius is a combination of his fans descriptions and the critical acclaim that he got- especially from sign.

HEAR, HEAR! Finally some common sense here. Thank You. Where were you a couple of months ago? I started a similar thread and some people refused to accept the truth: Prince CANNOT release his new music in the USA... and that's sad, dangerous and pathetic.
But if you ask me, all these problems started back in 1996...the excellent distribution/promotional campaign of Musicology/3121 and even Planet Earth was just a mirage...

I'd recommend Prince not talk about Chemtrails on TV anymore.

Bizarre attempt at irony; sorry, I don't get it ...

There's an ongoing conspiracy theory (once propogated by the man himself, before his death) that Michael Jackson was purposely allowed to die because of his offensive comments re: "The Jews" destroying careers, Tommy Motolla, and the NWO.
This, by extension, would mean that Prince's mentioning of NWO tactics (aka Chem trails) would put his career (if not his life) in danger.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
if he survived the whole "Fuck Warners-Slave" controversy, he can survive anything at this point; he only needs to accept that he needs a new deal with Universal Records or whatever; 3121 sales were high due to Universal's excellent distribution/promotional campaign...enough of these Daily Mirror tactics...

Prince's promo issues have been the same since 1985. He doesn't like doing album promo. He doesn't release albums fast enough, be it independently or attached to a label, and yet doesn't like to shop an album for a year.

If so, apologies, I just read the first and last lines and went

I'd say you're not missing much...time to look elsewhere for inspiration and original music methinks... he does use all the old drum sounds though, so if you really want to hear all of them regurgited for another album of misses you really ought to track the latest album out, I say latest as they are all as bad as each oterh these day, musical magnolia paint.

Two things struck me, when I read the header for this thread.... I had hi hopes....but it turned to another "bad" agains "good" thread...
1- Im in the same position as the poster, I still didnt get to the net, and order the album... Somewhat bying a new album in the shop, and the feeling while you go home, is something I really need to lay dead. But I sneakprewieved it on the tube... but just parts, as I dont wanna ruin the full experience in Hi Fi when I finaly get the album home. (shame on me)
2- all will be forgiven the day someone release the remastered full versons of all the olred albums including all the full extended versions on the albums, with all the intended outtakes that didnt had place on the orginal albums. It would have been a full 2-3 hours experiences in some cases . But... in a biz world, full of contracts, things like this would probably never happen Prince is right, with the artist in controll of own material, all things woud be possible. )
So, back to the point, sorry
With a top title like this thread, I would actualy look ca 10 years back, and remember I was living back in 1999-2001 period.
What did we have at that time? We had Joy Un2 the.. in 99, Some hype, never happend... We had the music club as best thing happening at all. Then the strange years continued with internett albums, and nothing really mayor for the records har happend for a while, and 2000 offered the live 2000 show DVD as hi light. 2001 gave new hope ofcause with the Rainbow album.
So.... what could we expext the next ten years???
Could we expext the 2004 year, where he was top earner in the industry? Superbowl? 21 Nights in London? All the drama, albums, ups and downs AGAIN... then he, after erlier stunts as first 3d effect album cover. Interactive DVD, internett releases, web awards as groundbreaking artist on the web? Something we knew for shure atleast, was that if nothing else would happen, the man would ALWAYS use the net to release music, probably to the day he becomes 100 years... Then he declares the net is dead! LOL... The man just has an amazing way to attract attention, and do so many bold, and unexpected moves, that he shakes the world over 30 years after he staret to shake it! - He counted sold albums on liveshows, and shook the industri world. He signed the release the millions of album on 1 day newpaper deal, and once again people got shooked. !
The last ten year has contained more action and news from the man, than Stings entire carear as Solo artist to compare to something. :p
And most important, with this pace...... where are we in 10 years from now??????? :O
>Peace and B WilD!!! | |

weave and dodge? we can do that all day to avoid the obvious.
when was the very first instance where prince gave his fans the finger, for no good legal reason?
and dont misread me here, i fully understand why people bootlegged his work and used his image and symbol without consent, and i fully understand why people spew their vile filth at him on fan-sites
but lets not miss the point.
WHEN did he EVER 'attack' his fan-base for no good legal reason? you said he's been giving his fans the finger for decades, right?
well? show me where he did so entirely unprovoked. this too shall pass

Here's an idea, instead of being a thief, how about you drop $10 and buy a disc from eBay or arrange a trade/purchase with an overseas fan?

Well, if I felt that an entertainer was giving me the finger for decades, I'd hardly be hanging out on a website devoted to him.

what!?! thats like the best thing he's done in 20 years ... probably one of the few reasons i still buy his records

I'm practically begging Prince to take my money for his music he won't sell it to me, but to others.
