Why is "For You" out of Print? "For You" is no longer offered in the iTunes US music store, nor amazon downloads, and on Rhapsody it is there but you cant buy it. Is it out of print? and why? I noticed it is still available in European digital stores.

So does anybody know why it is not available in any US stores? Anytime a P album becomes unavailable it depresses me.

I know of at least one band here in Australia who deleted (possibly wrong terminology) albums they planned to re-release shortly afterwards, as it gave time for those CDs to clear the shelves - ie. no point having CD "X" and CD "X-remastered" on sale at the same time.
Yes, it's a long shot and I'm forever optimistic, but I wouldn't necessarily see WB pulling Prince's first CD out of circulation right now as a negative...

Same here Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

But if that is the case why is it still available overseas....the same thing is true with the Love Symbol album. It was taken out of the US stores last year but is available in other countries.

Oh. Well, in that case, I got nothin', sorry

The US pressings go out of print every few years. The shelves are empty for a while and import stock is brought in if there is enough demand. Eventually the CDs are re-pressed and distributed, but there is a lag time for retailers. This is the case for all regular Warner Bros CDs that haven't been taken permanently OOP.
Anyone looking to buy Prince's back catalog at this time should just get a good used copy, wait a while, or a find NOS of one of those beautifully packaged Japanese SHM discs. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Figure of speech, yes? I mean, it doens't actually send you spiraling into an actual clinical depression...does it? [Edited 10/19/10 20:46pm]

because all of the copies have been sold out and WB does not think it is worth it to repress more.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Warner Brothers won't own the rights to that album for much longer so it probably isn't worth it for them to press up some new copies. It isn't exactly the strongest seller in his catalogue either making it even less attractive for them to repress it for the very short amount of time that they will still have the rights to it.

That makes some sense of course, but I doubt that it is permanently OOP on the WB imprint. Pandemonium, Sheila E's S/T and Romance 1600 earned a repress, but those numbers have to be even less than For You.
Prince gets the For You rights back in 2013, but he isn't exactly keeping his post WB catalog in print. In fact, most of his NPG works were only pressed once, some in larger quantities at the start - and then they were forgotten by him. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Still, it's strange that it was removed from US iTunes, no? (I'm such an optimist... I feel like Charlie Brown vs. Lucy's football )
For the record, iTunes Canada still shows it as available.

Like someone said above, just buy a used copy from Amazon or a local used CD store "For those who know the number and don't call...Fuck all y'all"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Indeed. Not really a point in owning the copyright when you are not going to do anything with it. I doubt WB not showing much love for For You has anything to do with any rights returning to Prince tho'. Here in holland the Prince bin gets more empty every year. In the record store it looks like has a catalogue of about 5 albums now, when it is actually about 35. There may still be a copy of lotusflower, musicology or planet earth there, but for the rest it's the old stuff like PR, SOTT, Parade, Lovesexy.
Apparantly they still find it worthwhile to reprint those every now and then.

I hope prince and his music doesnt fade away from the future generations minds, it would be a pity

I have a feeling there will be a heavy demand when he meets his maker...hopefully no time soon though.

Japan has many albums that are out of print elsewhere on CD, especially US soul and funk acts that are ignored by American record companies. Many such albums have never been on CD in the US and can only be found in used record stores, or for expensive prices on the internet, if they can be found at all. Some current groups like Swing Out Sister almost exclusively release their albums in Japan. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The physical copy goes in and out of print every few months or so at amazon.com. For a little extra coin, the import from Japan is still available.

Really??? Brand new copies??? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yes i believe there are some new copies of emancipation on amazon but i am not 100 percent sure
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This is amazing because both EMI and BMG lost interest in Emancipation and Rave so early after their respective releases. And as for Crystal Ball, it was manufactured by Prince himself and only distributed by BMG if i'm not mistaken, and it's hard to believe that Prince would have kept this album in particular in print A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If there are any copies of Crystal Ball(retail), Emancipation(both versions), and Rave Un2 out there still sealed and legitimately un-circulated, they would be new-old-stock and not from a re-pressing. Best Buy sold sealed versions of both the petri-dish and jewel-case Crystal Ball in their stores. Amazon Marketplace dealers can sometimes have NOS, but are most often full of BS. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

And they complain about filesharing...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Right. Their defense to that is that their property is stolen anyhow, so why would they still have to make costs and effort to make it available?
It's a circular argument. They hardly offer their music on the net either. How are people gonna get their hands on it legally then?

yes, I am lucky I bought all Prince official albums in the mid 90s, but today I cant find them in Brasil (or find imports for a very expensive price).
