The org is 97% gay. MoQuake.com is 95.3% gay. PrinceFams.com is 102% gay. The first 20 rows at every Prince concert are filled by gay people. Bria Valente is a gay man. the prince symbol almost replaced the pink triangle and rainbows as a gay identifier, but lost out by three votes at the annual national gay conference. I'm pretty sure all of this can be verified on Wikipedia.

So, yeah, Prince is iconically gay - and there's not a thing he can do about it.

So what? I wear make-up too and I'm not homosexual. And the part about the colour purple is simply a thesis of yours and it will always remain one, no matter how many people agree with you or how much you emphasise the word "is".

I ask again: What does colour have to do with sexuality? What does make-up have to do with sexuality?

There's a huge difference between what you call "queer" and actual homosexuality. The latter has always existed, "queerness" is something that was created a couple of centuries ago.

Prince simply did whatever the fuck he wanted.

What does makeup half to do with sexuality? Well of course it doesn't make one gay...however men who wear makeup and dress like women does make one transgendered which is a sexual identity...of course there are heterosexual men who are transgender. The reason why I might suggest that he might be a gay icon is that he WAS all about freedom in a society where racism, sexism, and homophobia benefit from each other. What I loved about Prince's image particularly From For You through 1999 is that it was all about freedom to be who you are and who God created you to be remember:

white, black, puerto rican everybody just a freakin'

where i come from we don't let society tell us how its supposed to be

am i black or white am i straight or gay?

Sexuality is all i'll ever need

no child is bad from the begining they only immitate there atmosphere

Gay people who are being bullied can definatly relate to these lyrics that are very liberating in an oppressive society.

I am in no way saying Prince is gay, nor do I believe he is...like I said most gay icons are not gay but from the tone of your wrightings it sounds like you are upset that a certain group of people who you might not be comfortable with are embracing someone you like. Its okay just because GLBT folks like Prince, in no way compromises your privelege as a heterosexual in this bigoted society. What is wrong with a group of people embracing someone who is not identified with them?

I'm not uncomfortable at all with any group of people embracing someone I like! I am not "defending" Prince or anything, I am "defending" that idea of freedom he has created, that idea that you found in his work too.

I just think that Prince' main aim was to eliminate the world from gender roles and I think that is a brilliant aim. But when people suggest he related to his homosexual audience by dressing differently or wearing make-up they do exactly what Prince tried to fight! Some extremists might even call that sexist, you know...

All I'm saying is Prince was not an icon for sexuality, but for freedom, right from the start. And if you're free you don't have to care about your sexuality anymore - you do what feels best.

He was addressing overall sexual freedom, which is what I was saying - he wasn't addressing homosexuality or heterosexuality in particular...

He is a gender identity icon which is a subset of gay culture/ societal issues. Although straight, pragmatic and lately a religious zealot he has yet to abandon an overtly androgynous presentation. Whether he likes it or not when a man who presents as counter to what is a traditional image of male attractiveness can become a sex icon to millions of women it pushes the ball forward. That Prince is a sex symbol contributes to a world where lgbt citizens see the certainty that America WILL wake up and expand civil rights for all of its citizens.

Just because Prince is gay does not make him a gay icon. The org is the only place I know of that has so many gay Prince fans. Every gay person I know, except for about two or three lesbians, cannot stand Prince, or "Miss Prince" as they call him, or most of his music.

Prince's music has been mostly hard funk/rock and most gay icons from my generation have been singers (usually straight females) who have made disco/house type music.

The only actual gay male icon I can think of is Sylvester who was in your face and completely open from day one and this was back in the 1970s. Even though Prince is gay, everyone I know views him as like George Michael....a gay man who will only come out once he's been caught. And knowing Prince with his years of confidentiality agreements, that won't happen anytime soon.

I think gay people should choose who they want to be their icon - it should nt be chosen for them.

Also, I would think gays would choose their icons because they have a great love for that artist's music/style/stage presence not just because they think that person was gay. Many women artists who are not gay have become gay icons. Some artists who never even aligned themselves with homosexuality became gay icons and it helped them reach a broader fan base. Just look at Brittney Spears. lol Gay guys love her like a fat kid love cake.

Gay = Happy

Homosexual = Loving someone with the same sex as you

Now tell me, how does the colour purple imply happiness or loving another person with the same sex? How does make-up or a certain type of clothes imply that?

It's only what the media and desperate homosexuals made out of homosexuality, but logic indicates that nothing Prince ever did in public has anything to do with homosexuality. Freedom, maybe, but not homosexuality.

Drag queens wear makeup all the time and purple IS a queer color. You are obviously not gay! + Gay does = Happy if homosexual is your orientation and you embrace and aren't afraid of it!

But obviously you did make a mistake or few concerning the fact you edited your message twice. Or if it was a minor tweak, the faults mine for believing so. The point is- While God makes no mistakes- humans DO.

I'm not going to even indulge on your false stance of the color purple., i'm sorry but did you create it?

Sin effects every person who was born. You steal an item, your a thief. You lie, your a liar. You look apon the same sex with desire- you are sexually immoral. God's given us free will- there are those who accept the Blood that was slain on a cross for their sins- as there are those living in ignorance to it.

First, I'm bummed out that nobody got my word play. Second, I've never once thought Prince was gay. Just figured all the clothing and makeup was part of the act. It's not like there wasn't thousands of guys playing metal in the 80's looking a whole lot more like women than Prince. Third, all colors are gay! lol

Oh and the rainbow children?

Absolutely not. Nothing of Prince symbolises being gay.

Being gay is not about Freedom of expression. Which is the only thing that bothers me about gays. Why do they so often need to "defend their position" of sexual preference as being a "freedom of expression? That's so superficial. Sexuality is far deeper and just is, so there's a HUMAN RIGHT to be who/what you are. Freedom of expression is a second layer concept which is not just for a selected group of people. It is for all.

"Am I black or white, am I straight or gay? This has more to do with "don't label, categorise or judge me" than about being gay. "life is just a game we're all just the same." Prince's earlier theme was "let your body be free, sexuality is all you'll ever need." Sexuality is part of the human race, no distinctions there about sexual orientation.

"gay people love that Prince pushed boundries and made people quit being stereotypical?" Do you think that only gays liked that? Straight people love it too. Racial discrimination is just as big if not bigger than sexual discrimination.

Who in showbiz doesn't wear make-up? Purple is a blend of pink and blue. Blue would have been far too ordinary for Prince. Purple has nothing to do with being gay. And besides, as his birth given name was "Prince" I believe the colour purple was meant to have connotations with "royal" so nothing about gay or pink alternative.

I'll definitely agree, in that yes, you should give props to Prince for freedom of expression and that he's done lots to try and do away with societal labelling. Also that gays would love him for not being afraid to be who he is. But it is just the same for straight people, so has nothing to do with being gay at all.

As for the song lyrics. We've often demonstrated on the org that a lot boils down to culture, inference, and open to one's own interpretation. Lyrics can also often be ambiguous. But Prince a gay icon? I think not.
