I was watching Purple Rain and it struck me that she just seems to forgive him and he never really apologizes for slapping her around.

Chalk it up to the power of the song "Purple Rain", but that song is dedicated to his dad and was written by the girls. It seems to be a general blanket apology, and not necessarily directed at Apollonia. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Well, he has no reason to apologize to his father. I think the dedication was to his health and surviving the suicide attempt, not so much the feeling behind the music. I think it's pretty interesting that he actually never says sorry in any way. (Even saying "I never meant..." is not an apology, it's just a declaration of intent.) But as a literary tool, the song is an implied apology.

Then again, the concept of Prince being knee-deep in misogyny is nothing new. He always was, always will be a misogynist.

It's not Purple Rain that gets her to forgive him. She comes back in the morning, while he's sorting through all his father's music sheets. So maybe it's implied that he apologized and we just didn't see it.

There are also a couple other things to consider:

1) Their relationship is hella fucked up.

2) Apollonia (the character) isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

After all, earlier in the movie he tricks her into getting buck ass and jumping into freezing water. Her reaction is to flash a "darn that charming man" smile as she shiveringly puts her leather gear back on.

Well, concerning Apples, Purple Rain is a metaphor describing the most intimate moment in their relationship. The first time they made love and connected physically. It's too bad that we won't get to see it as it was cut from the movie. It also explains why she was so emotional after the performance. I choose to look at the entire story as outlined in the screenplay as opposed to the final cut.

That always used to baffle me. The more times I saw the movie and got older and actually observe, the more I was going "WTF???!!!"

Yeah she didn't exactly arrive in Minneapolis with much money, just a wad of $20s that she used to buy the hotel room, and she had to hock her gold bracelet to get the guitar (Yet its back at the end of the movie). Sounds like a bad script too, I doubt she was making much for being in Apollonia 6.
