David Henry Hwang on working with Prince Apologies if this has already been posted - I tried a search and didn't immediately see any coverage.
Anyway, a friend of mine in NY knows David Henry Hwang, and when we met up a week or so ago, he told me that David had "done something" with Prince, and had written up all about it on his blog.
David Henry Hwang - Worki...th Prince.
Hopefully of some interest. [Edited 9/20/10 9:35am]

Nice find. Sounds like the typical 'Prince summons' story . I've always liked "Solo". Something different for him. I wish he would do more collaborations like this - with artists outside his normal field. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Good blog entry. Although I agree about it not being the best song. More an interesting little segue on the album.

He registered a 9 on the Fam-o-meter. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Good story, I didn't know David was such a huge fan, good he was able to make that connection. I always wondered how that all came about. I really like the song, because it is out of left field, I wish they had gone further and made more music. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

IMO, 'Solo' has to be one of the number one 'tongue loosers' at Guantanamo.
But it must be a real shock that someone whose music you're in love with all of a sudden approaches you for a collaboration.
I'm wondering whether Hwang ever got a penny for the lyric, though.

If he's listed as the lyricist...yes. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Cool story! A lot of people on here seem to loathe Solo, though. I personally love it, just have to be in the right mood to listen to it. Hearing a song live also helps me get into a song. As far as I know, he's only sang it once. TRUE BLUE

Thanks for the great story...I love that song!
I'm also thinking that it's a crying shame that nothing ever came of the idea to do a musical. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I am not that into Solo now, but at the time I remember being kind of excited by it, especially when he said "my name is.....no one"
There was all the hype around his name, for a second it seemed like he was revealing what it was. And horrifyingly it was "No One." What a depressing outcome that would have been. My Legacy

Great read. But it´s probably wiser not to tell him how much of a fan you are when you meet him for the first time and especially when he wants your input for a song. I always used to think that it was Prince who wrote the lyrics and Hwang came up with the music but it seems it was the other way around. Interesting. This song must have been a part of that batch of songs he wrote around the time he also wrote Strays of the World. I love both songs, Solo and Strays of the World ( I know I´m probably the only one...but hey, I really like Strays of the World). I wonder what the other songs intended for a musical were and what they sounded like. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
