Without getting into the trap of "defining" funk or funkiness, let me say this: The live version of "America" is funky without a doubt, but not a deep monsterous funk that the NPG were so capable of providing. Sonny T. and Michael B. absolutely blow Mark and Bobby out of the water in this regard.

You may be right here, but I'd much rather listen to Mark and Bobby... listening to Brown Mark during the 1999 tour... his bass really sounds the way I like bass to sound...

The Revolution had loads of interesting sides to it no other band could ever put across in such a convincing manner, but the NPG was the better band, technically and theoretically, more diverse and more accurate.

The funk isn't everything...

NPG are funky... so are so many other bands... NPG sounded like any old funk band to me. Nothing about their style stands out to me.

I think Prince's 1982-83 band was my favorite(Prince, brown mark, dez,lisa,matt,bobby)... nothing has sounded like that since...

While, for sheer musical ability, I would have to favor the NPG, BUT and this is a major but, there is little in this worth funkier than the Prince and the Revolution doing Irresistible Bitch and possessed. The revolution just had a vibe playing live that little comes close to, except of course, the MASTER of funk, James Brown.

Ditto, NPG were better musicians with Funk chops but the live Rev funk Jams were more of a change up in the set. With NPGyou kinda knew what their strengths were so it took away from what they were doing. The Rev got funky when he was still the pop star of the moment and it shed a light on their versatility. NPG were just objectively the best guys he could get period, but they never had the weight of large venues and pop stardom-they were anonymous to everyone but us. In 84-86 Prince's dancing and channelling of JB was a huge part of the set, he was still hungry. Alot of the NPG shows, although very funky suffered in context based on where he was in his career, and there wasn't the joy due to his WB conflict. Happy=funky lol.
