Unreleased instrumentals-a rough guide. Here is a list of unreleased Prince/related instrumental tracks. I do not claim this to be a complete list, but it will give you a rough idea of the amount of instrumental tracks out there, more than enough for an album or two. The list was compiled using The Vault book, but any additional info anyone may have would be appreciated. I have left out tracks which are titled "instrumental" to make the list a bit more interesting to read. I hope this may be useful or of some interest to you.

Now I have to find all of 'em. Think I have about 2/3 of them available, but there's a bunch in there I've never heard of (might have some of them too as "untitled").

It is a nice list, and then there are about 20 odd tracks which were titled "instrumental." And the list in the book only goes up to 2003-4. Quite an impressive amount of material. I don't think that people realize the scope of his instrumental output. The book described the tracks in more detail, and some of them sound very tasty indeed.

Hmm. It's the "Instrumental" tracks I was thinking of - got at least 20 of those. Nice list for sure.

There are a few tracks entitled "instrumental" which are very short, in some cases under or near a minute, but the majority of the "instrumental" tracks are proper jams as you will know. In my opinion some of the best tracks entitled "instrumental" are the 8 Loring Park tracks recorded with Bobby Z and Andre Cymone, great stuff.

Pity that only a small bunch of those titles are circulating...

It is also a pity that so little information is known of recordings post 2003-4. I'm pretty sure Prince has recorded more instrumentals since then. But even to have info on "normal" recordings would be handy too. We need an updated version of The Vault book, or something similar.

Prince seems to have done a much better job of keeping his hard drives under lock and key post TRC. Or he hired some people to do it for him. Pretty much just endless live recordings circulating for that era, but no studio outtakes/boots.

Yup, the river sure did dry up. Such a shame, because it is quite unlikely that recordings from that date onwards will see the light of day, until maybe Prince's death.

If the unreleased recordings since 2004 onwards are similar in quality to the released ones we ain't missing anything.

vitriol said: If the unreleased recordings since 2004 onwards are similar in quality to the released ones we ain't missing anything. You may have a point, but I would rather listen to any instrumental music done since then than listen to songs where the lyrical content is jw doctrine.

Just out of curiosity - how do we know what's circulating is correctly titled? I'll bet the early boots had fun making up "Princely" titles.

Good point.

Well, in fact we DO know that many early boots used incorrect titles, especially for instrumentals.
Divinity, Jamming 'til the dawn, Climax, Cruising down the highway, '24'...
