Prince - One of Us appreciation

I was just reading comments on Prince and covers. Some of you think he killed this song... in a BAD way... but I have to admit... I completely LOVE this song!

The passion he sings it with throughout the song, is amazing. And knowing Prince's "God" views, it's a perfect notion for him to ponder.

The song is pretty much flawless from beginning to end, and in the very beginning, it sounds like he says "We're doin' a new song."

I can completely imagine him coming into the studio and saying that, and then ripping into this tune!

I would have loved to have seen him perform this song live. No doubt, he'd have brought tears to the eyes of many.

The chorus... the voices in harmony... Prince's guitar... this is arguably Prince's best cover song, in my opinion.

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

The Emancipation version is crap, you can't even his the guitar!!!

The only good version is the live version at his first Emancipation concert from Paisley Park, nothing can touch that. (Which also features the only good version of Get Yo Groove On - the song actually comes alive).

Prince's version is half good, but I don't like the sparse production,

the original by Joan Osborne... is so much better, way more touching.

....... imo. wink

Funny b/c I like Prince's version better. I like the original but when I heard his version I was just really surprised by how different he made it sound... in a good way for me smile

Not a fan of his Betcha By Golly Wow, but that's just b/c I'm not really a fan of that song in general, just not really my cup of tea, then he released as a single... yuck! I did sorta like the video except for the weird dancers.

I agree with the OP, probably the only cover I like Prince has ever done. The arrangement and vocal performance are a lot better than the original imo.

The only complaints I have are that his voice doesn't have the same emotion as Osbourne's voice and that the instruments in the chorus can get a little too much, but his live versions solved both of them smile

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Agreed. The album version was flat compared to that performance.

Love it - Prince's version burns with an apololyptic fervor Joan Osborne probably never dreamed of (although I'm a fan of hers too). And that killer new wave hook reminds me of the Cars.

Cool.

I have to agree!!! Prince did a great job on the song!!! I really like his covers though, he is just an amazing singer. He really makes the songs come alive to when he does them live. If I had seen him do this song live...I'd have been in tears...his voice tends to do that to me!!

I love his cover of Crimson and Clover too!! WE jam that one all the time!! biggrin

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

it rocked pretty hard, and that album needed all the rock it could get, so I loved it.

Joan Osborne has an amazing, amazing, voice. Is she singing backup on this? I know there's a lady buried in there somewhere. Sometimes I think it sounds like her.

It's one of the best songs on CD 3 of Emancipation. That's not really saying much though unfortunately.. One of the worst CDs Prince has ever had anything to do with IMO. The original is awesome.

Really? Come on! It's dreadful. Corny, cheesy, middle of the road! I mean where's the cutting edge uncommercial Prince sound we all love in this song? Over produced... i can't go on. Might as well go away and listen to Michael Bolton if you like this.
