4 those who say Newpower Soul is a "Prince" album... ...more than Exodus or Goldnigga, because Prince sings on NPS and the one who sings make it the one whose album it is and that's it.
I have 2 questions: - What if Prince had released Bria's album under his own name, with a picture of him on the cover, making Bria the lead singer of a "Prince" album, would you claim it's a Bria album despite Prince's name on the cover? - What if Prince released a whole album with guest vocalists and none of his, would you refuse to consider it a Prince album despite his name being on the cover?
There's nothing crazy in my questions: several artists have released albums under their own name with only another or guest singers (Me'Shell Ndegeocello on one album, Seelenluft, Ryuichi Sakamoto and many others...) no and no.
I would go by the name on the title. Interestingly his name, symbol, IS on the cover of NPS (looks like a tatoo on his shoulder). This one is kind of ambiguous. His satellite projects are kind of "his" albums anyway. I wouldn't include Madhouse 8 or the Family in an official Prince/Symbol discography, but I certainly consider them an important part of his body of work.
NPS is an NPG/Symbol album. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

there's a thread very few days old, same subject.
Btw to me NPS is a Prince album, not NPG. Prince 4Ever.

1) It would still be Bria's album, it would still suck, and it would still remain relatively unplayed.
2) I'd file it after my Prince CDs, which is where I file my NPG albums.
I consider New Power Soul a Prince album, but I honestly don't care what other people do under their own roofs with their own collections. I don't get why it's such a point of contention, to be frank. I can totally understand why some consider it an NPG album, and I respect that decision. But it's a Prince album for me.

This concept to me would be a Prince album the same as that Quincy Jones alabum that came out with "Secret Garden" on it. It would be his music, his lyrics, his production but with guest vocalists.
NewPowerSoul was more of a Prince album than a NPG album due to his more obvious presence on its tracks. Exodus and Goldnigga were more to showcase the members of the NPG. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Seriously?
Prince does all vocals and instruments on NPS save few exceptions. I can think, specifically, of Rhonda Smith, Dougie Fresh, and Marva King. Zzzzzzz. It's a Prince album with second-rate material and tossed under the header of NPG. Not a difficult concept.

And he's on it, too: http://prince.org/msg/7/342552
It's an NPG album, per Prince's own words.

So the fuck what? Prince also said St Paul wrote Screams of Passion, his dad wrote The Ladder, and Tommy Barbarella wrote Girl 6. None of that stuff happened.

OK, I'll just go ahead and post what I did on the other thread:
It's a Prince album. Written by, and mostly performed by Prince.
...and I like it. "He's a musician's musician..."

Yeah. I love the album, myself.

as I said on the other thread, I consider it a Prince album. but considering its contents, I take no pleasure in doing so. now if he'd put out "Rave" as an NPG album as well, and I could kind of rationalize a reason to completely cast them both out of the Prince canon and completely forget them, then I might consider it.
New Power Soul is an NPG album in the same way that Chaos & Disorder was a album and Around The World In A Day was a Prince & the Revolution album.
surely we all know by now that Prince himself and the liner notes to his releases are the least reliable source available on the subject.
any subject. | |

Actually "Girl 6" is an NPG song as well, and Prince and Tommy both are listed as songwriters on that.

Technically Purple Rain is a Prince and the Revolution album, and is a Prince and the New Power Generation album, but to me they're just Prince albums.
If people might not know it's Prince doing everything, as on a Vanity 6 album or The Family, then it is not a Prince album anymore (in my humble opinion).
But NPS is a Prince album in my mind, despite any technicalities My Legacy

I consider NPS & Exodus Prince albums bcuz that's mostly who you hear. I didn't even realize Sonny & P was singing together until about a yr ago. But then again I hear Prince just as much as Sheila in A Love Bizarre & yeah I put A Love Bizarre on CDs as a Prince song. Same with Count The Days, Big Fun, Cherry Cherry, Exodus Has Begun (oh hell the whole CD is P really!)

Then you're not paying attention there. The Revolution played on most of the songs on Purple Rain, and 3 tracks are live tracks. LGC was recorded as a band, so was "Computer Blue" and "Darling Nikki". WDC and TBO were really the solo efforts.
D&P and have a lot of band on them too. Even Michael B. dropping his headphone and missing a drum fill was left in on "The Morning Papers", creating a great little band moment in that song.

Those examples are, to me, even more reason for calling NPS a Prince album. I don't separate my Prince, Prince and the Revolution, and Prince and the New Power Generation albums out.

So when someone asks "what's your favorite Prince album?" Purple Rain is not eligible because it's a band album? My Legacy

exactly, but I'm not paying attention My Legacy

I find it this kind of debate interesting because it is so much like my internal debate when I decide how I want to file or organize my music collections, specifically my Prince & Prince related music collection.
In a world where many people I know don't even organize their music by artist or alphabet, much less spend time or thought on details like this one, it's kind of cool to discuss and debate with others ideas that most don't care about.
I believe most people that will even have this discussion have to see a little of both sides of the "argument" to even care enough to comment. That's the only reason for giving a crap... we see that their is validity to each option and we've given it enough thought to make our own decisions as to which option is most valid for ourselves.
It should be fun to debate and discuss with others that have gone through the same process. However, the fun is sucked right out by those that feel so strongly that there is only one right answer and that it is not up for debate. The fun suckers fall on both sides of the discussion. Why they even find the discussion interesting enough to participate in, let alone try to dominate it, is a mystery to me.
Basically, I think everyone is right. You should file/organize your music in a system designed specifically for you, so you can find what you are looking for when you are looking. NPS is a New Power Generation album. NPS is a Prince album. Put it where you want. If that decision is too hard, buy 2 copies and put one in each slot...
Why are there 2 active threads on this topic, anyway? They need to merge... Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.
