Personal 1 Disc Emancipation Edits

I read somewhere recently about Prince fans editing Emancipation down to one album's worth of material, tried it myself, & wondered what other Orgers would put on their own personal one disc versions. Anybody? Just curious. Also interested to know if anybody thinks it's perfect as it is.

My version:

New World

In This Bed I Scream

La-La (Means I Love You)

Face Down

One Kiss At A Time

Joint 2 Joint

Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife

Slave

Sleep Around

The Love We make

Emancipation

for mine i took the slow/mellow stuff on disc too in the order on the disc, then took the other similar stuff from the other 2 discs, such as one of us and the love we make and i can't make you love me, and i added into the light and i will (from chaos & disorder - as they sound similar to the other tracks), and i added the 95 version of empty room on the end. i started with 20/20 and i might have added escuse me is this really goodbye. i didn't put the standard soul ballads like lalala and betcha by golly wow, it was all the mellow stuff. it make a great disc. i still have it but i don't have the tracklisting written down

It appears to me that you've tried to design a "regular" Prince album feeling and it's a good attempt, I think, although not all of the tracks would have been my choice, too. smile

Wow, that's a tough one. I had it whittled down to two good disks at one point (which really isn't hard if you remove a couple of songs, and edited a few others down.

But for one disk:

Right Back Here In My Arms

Somebody's Somebody (LiveStudioMix)

Damned If I Do

Courtin' Time

The Love We Make

In This Bed I Scream

White Mansion

Sleep Around

One Kiss At A Time

Emale

Soul Sanctuary

My Computer

Saviour

Face Down

The Love We Make

That's 1 hour and 11 seconds. Plenty of stuff.

All the cover tunes - make that a Special Edition second CD EP

Betcha By Golly Wow

La La Means I Love U

I Can't Make U Love Me

One Of Us

Speaking of edits, I went through the CDs and edited some songs down. Things like "Sleep Around" and "Jam of the Year" and "Get Yo Groove On", one of them having that stupid guy trying to get into a club, etc. Cut all that out, and edit the others down to just the "song" and leave out the extended jam sessions, and the songs are a lot more focused and desirable. The songs I edited down here "Jam of the Year", "Get Yo Groove On", "We Gets Up", "White Mansion", "Mr. Happy", "Sex In The Summer", "Joint 2 Joint", "The Holy River" (rearranged that one for fun),"New World", "The Human Body", "Style", "Sleep Around", "Da Da Da", "My Computer".

Totally cut out "The Plan". I also switched out the LiveStudioMix of "Somebody's Somebody" for the album version.

if I had to cut it down to one disc, here's what I'd keep, no particular order

Jam Of The Year

Right Back Here In My Arms

Somebody's Somebody

In This Bed I Scream

One Kiss At A Time

Soul Sanctuary

Emale

Dreamin' About U

Joint 2 Joint

The Holy River

Slave

Face Down

Sleep Around

My Computer

The Love We Make

Hmm...I'd go with:

Right Back Here In My Arms

White Mansion

Damned If I Do

In This Bed I Scream

Sex In The Summer

E-Male

Curious Child

Dreamin' About U

Joint 2 Joint

New World

Face Down

The Love We Make

..maybe One Of Us somewhere in there. And probably mess around with the order as well.

That's actually pretty perfect.

Although I would probably replace La La La with either Soul Sanctuary, White Mansion or I Can't Make U Love Me.

Hmm, I would not call the album perfect but I have no problem listening to it as is. I've never really thought "the album would be so much better if..." Honestly, this may be the Prince album that I have listened to the most. Of the three discs the first one is probably the most perfect. I find the second disc drags ever so slightly with all of the ballads and it took me quite a while to warm to the first four songs on disc three but the album as a whole works very well for me. I don't think there is anything terrible on the album, even songs like "Mr. Happy" and "Da, Da, Da" have bits in them that I quite like. I guess if I had to change one thing about the album I would drop the cover songs in favour of originals. "One Of Us" is the only cover that improves over the original and I always thought it was cool that Prince never did a cover song before.

Me, too. And then releasing a cover song as the first single, I was like, "WTF?!" eek
