He'll never be the same. After reading a few threads in which fans/orgers express their disappointments, I came to the conclusion some people don't give Prince the opportunity or natural stage of life to change and be who he wants to be. Don't we all get to learn from our mistakes, develop our tastes, explore new horizons, meet inspiring people, date whoever we'd never imagine he would.... Most of the disappointment comes from those wanting Prince to be/do the same thing he did in the 80's, during the celebrations-Friday night parties, while he was with Mayte, and much more. Shouldn't people who claim they love him for him accept him for who he is/wants to be and go with that?

it would be great if we could focus on all the positive things but i also suspect that prince receives the fanbase he deserves. this too shall pass

I agree He wouldn't be at this point in fame if he didn't I am only referning to those poor disappointed fans who keep complaining about what he should or should not be/do.

I think what many fans would have liked was for Prince to continually have reinvented himself and his music like he did in the 80´s and in 1993/94 and like Madonna has managed to keep doing for longer than he has. That means the exact opposite of us wanting him to do the same thing as he did in the past. We'd like to see him back at the head of the game, doing something new.
But, alas, Prince seems happy just doodling like Back In The Day, Ol' Skool style. That makes for a great party band playing nostalgic songs that we all remember from our childhood/youth, giving us That Ol' Feeling, but it's not new. FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

And what does Madonna do that's new? Hire the hip producers who are making music that is hip today?
That's not reinventing yourself, that's following the trends of the day.
Personally, I prefer to listen to Prince linn drum beats that are from or sound like they're from 86 rather than listen to him try to rap and say so called hip stuff like "I aint tryna be a hater".
Thats where Prince screwed up and thats when some of us fans started to complain. Instead of staying in his own bag he bacame just another sucker.

Well, I accept that he does what he wants and be's who he wants to be (I absolutely respect it), and I still absolutely LOVE his music!!! He was, is, and allways will be a genius!!! Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I second that!! I love Prince just the way he is. When I watch the stuff from the 80s before I was born, I'm always thinking "I wish I could have been around back then to see this live." That's natural, since Prince was at his best and he was so sexy. But then again, when I watch stuff from the Musicology Tour, I'm like "Gosh, he's even better than he was before. And he looks sexier too!" Then I'm brought to the present and I see him perform "Crimson and Clover" and just adore it. I just can't stop loving him...it's like whatever he does, it works for me. He just has "IT" and no matter how he does what he does, it's still magical. That's what a fan should think, love who the man is, not who you want him to be. Plus, Prince has always been/is/and will always be a genius and truly amazing!! And drop dead gorgeous!!! I wouldn't change a thing about him!![Edited 8/29/10 23:48pm] Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I think that nobody can tell an other person what to do, especcially not a person like Prince. Would you like it when everybody is telling you how you should live your life? I will always follow Prince because he already did so much (different) things in life. He always does something you don't expect. When I look back to the beginning that I became a fan, Prince gave me so much nice moments, fun and excitement. I will always remember those moments. I'm getting older too and understand very well that you can not live your life with the energy you dit when you were younger. Prince gave a lot off energy in his life and now it's time to do it slower.

I'm not sure what this means. Does this mean because Prince released so many classic albums in the 80's that we owe it to him to love everything he's done since?

No, it means just because you dig his 80 stuff doesn't mean you have to dictate what he ought to be doing these days

I just find it funny that you read alot of cats on here complaing they haven't liked his output for over a decade, but they are still here. If you no longer love the music, move on. It will be ok. 1980-Present

It will be ok. I`m w/ you here... Personally, I think if an artist I liked hadn`t released what I thought was a good album in over 5 years I would move on... case closed, they have lost the mojo that I loved so much... but not here. People have been hating on albums for 10 plus years putting down other orgers positive reviews of current output. It`s beyond me but it`s very much the case here. I also understand still liking an artist`s music of the past & not their current output, but to dedicate so much of your free time constantly hating seems like a very sad waste of time to me. I`m also all for a constructive critique/review, but they`re generally quite over the top here in terms of ripping stuff to shreads. For however much annoying negativity there is here there is also a wide abundancy of very helpful & very knowledgable folks, however disgruntled they may or not be.

I highlighted the last part because that is what a lot of us do not do. We do not accept people as they are. We always want more or for them to do what we like. When it comes to P's music, I'm along for the ride. I have to admit that I'm a lil spoiled and since 1996 I've been kind of used to the fact that an album would come out every year or I had heard and seen how his back catalog was an album a year and my mouth just fell open. 20Ten has come and gone and a lot of us U.S. admirers are wondering if the album will come over this way, to allude to that briefly. I have a few copies because my wife put herself out there on Facebook to get the album. If not that way, we would've went the eBay route. I accept that he's a JW and I'm not, I accept that his musical style has changed since the 1999 era and I accept it. I also keep in mind that some people are natural complainers and whiners.
I just keep in mind prince.org is prince.org and roll with it. We all grow and change, some physically, some spiritually and some of us emotionally. Then some of us do not change as much. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Even on his bad days P's musical output is 100000000 times better than most of the current music. 20Ten is not Purple Rain or any of the mis late 80s stuff and even early 90s when he was really breaking ground and putting himself out there, but it's still quality music that I happen to respect. I don't like ALL of it, but I don't have to, it's not a requirement.
Its pretty much impossible for lightning to strike twice. It happened with Thriller, it happened with Purple Rain. Nither one of them will ever top those once in a lifetime musical experiences, so people who are expecting that are gonna be disappointed. It's not gonna happen.
Sometimes the creative muse moves on... that DOES happen. P's life now is not the same life he was living before so his experiences are different which means the muse is different which means the music is different. I think tho that some folks are remembering the bad taste that Prince has given the fans over the years with the internet watchdogging and the lotusflower and NPGMC fiascos, and making their personal beefs with him reflect how they feel about his music. I understand it, but sometimes you gotta separate the man from the music, u know? It isn't easy to do.
He will never be the same, that sure is a fact. None of us are the same person we were 10 or 15 or 20 years ago. Prince esta muerto...

I have not liked much of anything Prince has released since the early 90s BUT I check in with this site fairly regularly b/c:
(1) Prince's output from '78-'88 was so incredible and voluminous. I still listen to that stuff and I occasionally learn new facts about the songs, albums, movies, videos, unreleased songs, etc.
And
(2) The fact that Prince was so unbelieveably great for a solid decade and then artistically fall off the cliff after that the way he did is pretty damn fascinating to me. I never would have guessed that 1990-the present would have turned out the way it has considering how amazing he was prior to that.
And btw, to say that the Batman soundtrack is better than SoTT is ...... unreal. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

That I agree with!! I like alot of his NEWER stuff alot more than I like alot of his older stuff!! Give me 20Ten, Lotusflower, 3121, Planet Earth, and Musicology and I'm MORE than happy, those cds rock and I actually love most of his stuff from Rave U2, Emancipation, Symbol, and TGE too. So to say he's lost it is NOT the case here. He's changed, but I'm loving the change. It's hard to compare the stuff from the 80s to current stuff since it's so different, but equally as good. Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

First off, i don't love him. Don't know him, have little in common with him, if anything at all. I don't want him to embarrass himself and us putting out dogshit like 'Purple & Gold' is all. He used to have pride in his work. That's non-evident now. The quality was there.
I never knew he recorded 'She's always in my hair' and 'Erotic City' on the same day until recently. That is so far beyond him now, its unreal. My loyalties lie in that era.

I digged most of his albums up to EMANCIPATION but if I were to hear his albums since then from beginining to end it wouldn't be more than the fingers on my hand.

First point, my thoughts exactly!!
Second point, I actually think MJ did top himself! But that's JMO, not ablum sells wise, but song quality, got better with each ablum. I'd rather have Dangerous or Invincible over Thriller any day! His songs Dangerous are 10x better and Invincible, especially the ballads are 100x times better!
As far as Prince, Purple Rain does probably remain my fave, but Musicology and 20Ten and somewhat 3121 are close to Purple Rain in that every song just about I LOVE and think are genius! I just happen to think the songs on Purple Rain are superior!! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I agree, I was a huge Bryan Adams and Aerosmith fan for a few years, but don't spend any time on their fanboards since I'm not much into the recent stuff. I may pop in and discuss an old ablum or something, but I definately don't waste time criticizing newer music. Life is so much more valuable than spending time being so negative. You can't be a happy person being so hateful right? Love is so much easier to give. I agree, I love knowledgeable people and appreciate all that I've learned about Prince that I didn't know, and until it get's nasty, the debates are fun. So there is good... Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol
