Minneapolis Sound post 1989 Can anyone list examples of "The Minneapolis Sound" in use, post 1990. Both with Prince and other artists. Obviously Prince himself revived it in 2009 with the MPLSOUND album and again this year with some tracks on 20TEN, but if you have any examples from 1990-2010 other than those, that would be great.
It seems that after The Time's "Pandemonium" everyone had moved on. Jesse Johnson has never done anything that I would consider Minneapolis Sound since "Every Shade of Love" in 1988. Prince perhaps threw out the odd jam here and there but he had by-and-large moved on from the Minneapolis Sound since "Parade" in '86. Jam & Lewis had moved on after "Pandemonium" I think....

Well, even though Rhythm Nation came out in '89, it was probably the pinnacle of that Minneapolis Sound.
In Paisley Park, however, 90/91 was when Prince "sold all of his Digital equipment" and went for a more "natural sound." Diamonds and Pearls was great in that respect. So different from Graffiti Bridge and the Batman Soundtrack.
Newpowersoul had a huge dose of that old flavor, though. Chaos and Disorder to an extent as well. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I definitely agree with Rhythm Nation.
I hear some throwback sounds on "Chaos & Disorder" but it's not the "Minneapolis Sound" per se. At least not to my ears. Newpowersoul is closer but I wouldn't call that the "Minneapolis Sound" either. |

The Minneapolis Sound as we knew it died at the end of 1989.

Really? What about Pandemonium? "New Power slide...."

It's opinion but to me it wasn't the same. Just to my ears. Just my opinion. Maybe it does to you...

Well, technically Timmy's right. All the songs on Pandemonium were recorded anywhere from 1983 thru 1989. It was just released in 1990.

To me, a lot Pandemonium is the original MPLS sound far more than anything Prince put out from Purple Rain onwards. "New Power slide...."

I agree with Pandemonium being Minneapolis Sound. At least, cuts like "Jerk Out" definitely are.

As the poster above you said, it was probably old recordings that they decided to put on the album (same with some of the stuff on Grafitti Bridge).

Exactly, Prince's version of what a Time album would sound like circa 1989 (i.e. Corporate World) was pretty far removed from the MPLS sound. Once they (the magnificent seven) added older tracks like Jerk Out and Chocolate and added newer ones like It's Your World and Pandemonium (which leaned toward the traditional MPLS sounds), the album that was released was a lot more "MPLS" than what we initially were going to get.

I agree for the most part. But "Corporate World" would have had a couple stone-cold Minneapolis grooves. "Murph Drag" was intended for that album as was "Databank" which did make the cut for Pandemonium also. |
