Who compiled The Dawn 4.1?

This set has to be the best fanmade reconfiguration of any genre I've ever heard. Period. It's professionally done and is so intuitive about the transitions that it really speaks to how much of a fan this person is of the music. Who did it? What's the story on this set?

As it is, I had never heard such extended versions of "Come" (original version) and "Billy Jack Bitch" amongst others.

It is amazing. I picked it up about 6 months ago and it never strays too far from my player. It really sounds like a labor of love.

Thanks BorisFishpaw.

This is an awesome set, the way the era (Gold Come Truth) should have been released.

But not just my favourite boot, it probably my favourite album ever and I mean of all artists.

Thank You

The Dawn has been in my CD changer for about a year - and it gets played a lot.

DON'T TALK 2 STRANGERS

SOMEBODY'S SOMEBODY

FACE DOWN

2MORROW

EXTRAORDINARY

These songs have absolutely NOTHING 2 do here, the guy who did this might as well have included Computer Blue and Strange But True while he was at it rolleyes

I'd also exclude the Chaos & Disorder tracks because they definitely sound "rough" compared 2 the Come/Gold tracks, and really belong 2 something else even though some were recorded at the same time. Same goes with the minimalist Undertaker tracks.

A definitive tracklist (in no particular order) should include:

Come songs:

Come

Space

Pheromone

Loose!

Papa

Race

Dark

Solo

Letitgo

Orgasm/Poem

The Gold Experience songs:

P Control

Endorphinmachine

Shh...

We March

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World

Dolphin

Now

319

Shy

Billy Jack Bitch

Eye Hate U

Gold

Other releases:

Days Of Wild

Love Sign

Pope

Peach

Interactive

Acknowledge Me

Ripopgodazippa

Calhoun Square

What's My Name

Strays Of The World

Hide The Bone

18 & Over

Mad

Funky Design

+ of course all the available NPG Operator segues.

I've excluded Rock & Roll Is Alive because even though it sounds more Come/TGE than Emancipation, it was recorded long after the rest of these tracks and couldn't have been on a late 1994-early 1995 release.

There u have 36 songs which makes a 12songs/CD release in the spirit of Emancipation. Of course we still shoulda choose which version of all the songs 2 include. 4 the sake of having a sound quality as good as possible and out of respect 4 Prince's choices (reflecting the choices he probably woulda made if he had been able 2 release The Dawn as a 3 CD-set), i'd stick with the released versions (except 4 Days Of Wild since the studio version is obviously the one that should be there, but we have it with a very decent sound quality anyway, and as 4 Interactive which was released in 2 versions, i'd stick with the edited CD-Rom version because thematically it fits with the NPG Operator intro and break). A last problem is the sound level, which is different depending on the released (Crystal Ball is louder than TGE which is louder than Come, etc.), but that can be handled with any sound software.

I might do it one day if i have the time... cool

Mmmh... U're tripping, dude lol

I don't think Boris ever claimed this to have been Prince's own tracklist 4 this project (no tracklist 4 The Dawn was ever known by us fans as far as i know). Believe me i always take Boris' words as holy gospel but in this case i think it's just the album Boris would have liked 2 hear as opposed 2 the album that Prince woulda released if he coulda (Boris correct me if i'm wrong). I respect that and as far as i know u can make any compilation that u'd like 2 hear, but if we have to try to make something as close as possible as what The Dawn would have been if released b4 the end of 1994, my tracklist is as factual as possible.

Except 4 Love Sign & Calhoun Square, ALL the songs have been included in, or at some point considered 4 either Glam Slam Ulysses, Come or TGE. 18 & Over wasn't either but it was considered 4 a Come EP so i kept it.

The only factual songs that are circulating and that i've ommited are the 2 Chaos & Disorder tracks that were considered 4 TGE in a 1994 configuration, i.e. Chaos & Disorder and Right The Wrong so yeah, you could include these, except that we don't have the 1994 versions with a decent sound quality (if at all) and anyway Prince started to consider Chaos & Disorder as a different project as early as 1994, which de facto excludes all the other C&D tracks.

As 4 Rock & Roll Is Alive and 2morrow, it's a FACT that they were recorded long after these sessions (1995 and 1996 respectively) and it's quite likely that Face Down wasn't recorded b4 1995 as well, so if u want 2 include these songs u can as well include all Emancipation and Girl 6 while we're at it. Somebody's Somebody seems to be from late 1994 and anyway it was originally 4 a Derrick Hugues project. The other songs were recorded by 1994 but well, if u include Extraordinary and Don't Talk 2 Strangers why not include all the songs from The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale and the whole I'll Do Anything sessions as well? And the same goes with at least half of Chaos & Disorder and while we're at it why not include the whole Undertaker album, and Work That Fat, and The P, and... u see what i mean, don't u?

The only really dubious songs in my tracklist would be the aformentionned 2 tracks that weren't considered 4 any known tracklist (but Love Sign obviously woulda been a single and as 4 Calhoun Square, well, at least it DOES sound cohesive with the other tracks) and 18 & Over because it was recorded in mid-1994 and it's quite likely that The Dawn would have been released at this point if WB had allowed it, so we might take it out but then we'd have 35 songs.

So go ENJOY Boris' tracklist because i'm sure his sequencing sounds GREAT biggrin

But please don't come lecture me about facts.

(Boris, you can lecture me about facts as much as u want) cool

What facts?

"The Dawn" was an ongoing project since the 1980's and had been revived in the 1990's...

It consisted of songs that were recorded LONG before the whole "Come"/"The Gold Experience" era...

Nothing from "Chaos and Disorder" was ever going to be released much less be included on his Magnum Opus "The Dawn"...

Prince has been working on projects called "The Dawn" for years. The first time that songs were known to be recorded for an album with this title was back in 1986 (though it wouldn't surprise me if Prince had the idea much earlier than this).

The idea was then revived again in the 90's with all the Come and Gold material, though info is very sketchy about what Prince intentions were around this time (plans seemed to change on a daily basis). A triple album was mentioned and the NPG operators were recorded as a unifying theme for the project and it looked likely that this version of The Dawn would have nothing musically to do with the 1986 project. Though, from what I heard, it seems like the most likely release format for this material (had it got that far) would have been a series of 7-track mini-albums or "Experiences", as Prince had apparently grown bored with "albums" as a format (though this may have had more to do with his disagreements with WB at the time than genuine artistic reasons).

The Dawn raised it's head again as a project in 1996 and was intended to be the follow-up album to Emancipation. This would've featured yet another different collection of songs. It's unknown whether this still would have been a triple album (as that idea had already been used for the previous album). The only confirmed tracks for this incarnation were a new Mustang Mix ('96) of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World and 2 versions of Welcome 2 The Dawn (the released acoustic version and the unreleased 'electric' one).

Prince still mentions The Dawn even now as an ongoing project. Allegedly a magnum opus that he's saving all his best songs for (e.g. The Divine). Who knows if "The Dawn" will eventually see the dawn?

It seems like the closest a configuration of The Dawn came to seeing the light of day was 1997 (maybe it became The Truth... maybe not), as that Borders Holy River promo cassette actually stated "From the 4thcoming album The Dawn" in regard to the second track Welcome 2 The Dawn. This kind of underscores that fact that Prince has the ability to focus on one thing about as much as a deaf fruit bat.
