Funky, like when some putrid, rotten liquid leaks out your garbage bag into the bottom of the can. Then, when you change it you get a whiff of some nasty stank and be all like, "ew! what's that?!"

"Jughead" can be considered a masterpiece, compared to this one

Funky like that gym sock that you left for eighteen weeks on purpose. It stinks so bad your room (and the entire house) has to be quarantined. lol

- Dont know why. When I read some reviews, I thought it would be only a bad song, like ´(There will never be another) like me´ but when I heard it, I couldnt believe. It´s embarassing. One of Prince´s worst songs EVER. It´s as embarassing as ´Wedding feast´ (although WF is more of a segue than a song). And ´Jughead´ is funky too...

I just listened to tamborine again today.... ouch. ELM has parts that are funky, but the presentation as a whole is like "filler" material, like something from Crystal Ball.. just my opinion. Not every Prince song is going to be killer... no artist I know has a complete, bust a nut album...except J. Bieber... LOL.. NOT lol

It's at best a filler song. I can get why people say it's a fun song but it's too simple I guess. But I love the music, don't get me wrong, the music and the delivery is Dirty Mind-esque. Like it's said, don't take it seriously.

anybody that could like a song like jack you off from controversy should like this song. the lyrics to that song are total novelty. at least everybody loves me makes sense or to me it does. i never listen to jack you off. I listen to everybody loves me everyday.

Artistically it's the strongest track conceptually on the album. No kidding. All the other tracks are retreads of normal Prince agenda.

The sitcom retro 70' sing along nonsense song's closest cousin is "Ronnie Talk to Russia", but this one manages to go lyrically in concept to a self referential mockery while still retaining the mass church revival hippy theme of the opening track.

And it is meant to "bug". Just listen to the buzz effect on the vocals. Like a taunt.

It's very cool. He is in total creative control of himself. I love it when he doesn't try to pander to ANYONE, like in this case.

Absolutely! Well put!

I LOVE this song because Prince is not trying to be cool and he's not trying to be funky.

Instead it's natural, spontanious and silly and really doesn't take itself too seriously.

[Edited 8/13/10 2:38am]

Shut up already, damn.

Yes, it´s meant to be silly.

Let´s make something clear: I like fun/party/non-pretentious songs. I can enjoy even not-so-great party tunes like ´I like funky music´ from NPS and I absolutely LOVE ´Pretty Man´.

But ´Everybody loves me´ is truly embarassing (and I am not talking about the lyrics). It sounds like one of those cheap songs that people play in a B-day party.

What I can't help but think, though, is that Prince made a serious album, starting with the more conservative rousing revival musical type anthem of Compassion (with only the handclaps and mix to brand it as a "Prince" song) and then the dark, galaxy trotting dark rock n roll lament of infinitely owning a dirty heart... forward on through the breezy light summer but hard funky 70's style "Sticky" that transforms into a reflection of a "dirty (disfuncational) heart" again towards the end... on to segued songs that speak of a place of mature love, personal spiritual stability...

Then suddenly comes "Everybody Loves Me" a "fuck you" to the whole preceding vibe with a sarcastic, narsaccistic, musically satirical and ironic song that still manages to be an anthem for love for everyone, but obviously becomes self centered in a teasing taunting way (even the vocals are mixed to buzz and irritate)... then a bonus track that sounds like he's mimicking a Lil Wayne type rock/rap fusion meant for the stage in front of teenagers... but done in that mini cute Prince way.

It sounds like he deliberately derides the vibe of the album by going young and flippant in the last two tracks (admitedly the last one is not part of the sequence) right after the most mature, at peace sequence of songs he's put together ever.

Does this mean he led us through a mature Prince album and then suddenly a Camille like personality hijacked it in the very end? Is he making fun of any fans that were won over by the album?

It's interesting how divisive this song is among fans. I think it's funky and I like the playful tone. I give the song 7 out of 10. The part starting with: "This party's sick" (1:31-1:56), and the part starting with: "There ain't nothing wrong" (2:22-3:00) - those are the coolest parts.

...speaking about divisive songs, I also like Arms Of Orion smile

Because it's secretly the best song on the album to create such a provocation. Actually "Sticky" was talked about a lot too.

Hmm... I'm reading your comments ufo but I don't get the sarcasm...like there was on "F.U.N.K." and "No More Candy 4 U".

"Laydown" seems more likely to be the f-you track than this one.

The sarcasm is in a famous pop star just parading around singing "Everyone Loves Me" in a na-na-na-nah-nah tuanting tone with a musically retro/childlike/mantra chorus. The music also is a jump in style and tone from all that comes before it. So maybe it's not sarcasm, but almost making fun of his pop stature and supposed duty to make serious music in a conventional "cool" vibe.

A more sophisticated version of this vibe (if you take the songs out of context on their own) would be Pop Life where the meaning of the lyrics is that he is on top, and not everyone deserves to be... but he throws in the song break where the riotous public breaks the song and "throw the bum (Prince) out".

Pop Life, musically speaking though, is not sarcastic, its straightforward funky pop music in the "Prince" brand sound.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

nod Funky, like when you wear those gym socks with some shoes that are also past their due date. You can smell them, but you're SURE nobody else can smell that mess. So you just go about your day pretending they don't actually smell bad enough to make somebodies eyes water.
