I was going thru some old stuff and came across my D&P box that I bought at a record shop on Nichollette Mall in Mpls in '92 (can't remember the name but it's been gone for a while). I did a search on the org to see if this was legit or not and came across a thread from 2009 saying it wasn't official even though it was in stores. With how sue happy Prince is, wouldn't stores, especially chain stores, take a chance on selling unauthorized stuff with his name on it? Or would it just be the manufacturer that is liable?

So this ain't worth nothin'?

Let It Be Records. They had all the goods! I have seen this Paisley shaped box and I believe there was also one for . I have always heard they were not official. Can't say that they are worth nothing, though.

The CD and CD booklet look official. Don't know if just anybody could have duplicated the lenticular sticker on the cover. But I've never seen the box here in the Bay Area, and we get EVERYTHING Prince in our Amoebas at one time or another.

It is not legit. I have the Diamonds & Pearls paisley box as well. Got it on ebay. I actually saw the one at Let It Be Records in Minneapolis when it was there, but couldn't afford it at the time. Now I'm thinking of selling it, but wonder how much it is worth.

There was a similar box made for and I think that it included the Sexy MF single.

I miss Let It Be Records. It was a sad day when it disappeared. I moved from Minneapolis a few years ago and have no idea what is there anymore. . .

Yeah, it wasn't legit.

There was a rash of these kind of things in the early 90's. The CDs inside were legit, it was just the

extra packaging (wooden boxes) etc. that weren't official. I remember there was a similar thing

years before where some company made clocks out of 12" picture discs. It was a bit of a legal

grey area, where an existing official item was re-used by a 3rd party to create something else

without permission from the original company.

Yes, the small (not much bigger than the CD) gold box with the purple symbol on the front was

a genuine WB limited edition version of the album manufactured when the "" album was first

released.

The big wooden box with a male and a female symbol on the front wasn't. It was made by the

same company who did the D&P Paisley box.

Sorry, don't know how many were made. It must have been a lot though, as it wasn't hard to

get and you could still buy new copies from regular stores for several years after!

This reminds me of the old Love41Another post where they talked about the Ways of the Pharaoh or what the fuck ever and they posted a bunch of scans of those unofficial/import singles with weird combinations of songs like Erotic City b/w IWD4U and such.

Ha - That was when L41A absorbed a lot of us fan sites at the time. I owned a small fan site at the time called Purple Circle and a bunch of us were confronted about absorbing into what became NPGOnlineLTD.

I wasn't interested. At the time there was no need to and there was a lot of creepy shit going on within chatrooms and the Prince community in general. What became NPGOnlineLTD was not what his lackeys promised. It was an all-inclusive world where Prince sought your input if he needed it and if he didn't, you were left waiting for input for a long time while things went ahead without your knowledge.

I know that a few sites were absorbed at the time and my memory is pretty hazy about Sam Jennings joining, but he was a big part of that whole movement. This was before the initial cease and desists, though shortly after DTT and every other prominent site who didn't join into the NPGOnlineLTD collective were served with emails forcing them to either collapse or to join up with them.

I can only imagine that it was Prince's idea that we all would join with him and form some sort of collective Prince community under a single banner, but the restrictions on content and the rules laid out for those of us who were asked to join were too restrictive, IMO. At the time, I might've been 18 and my site was just for fun and fans, not something that was gearing up to be some sort of Rainbow Children conglomerate.

In the end, his idea fell short as most sites did not agree to be absorbed and they folded rather than being assimilated. This was the precursor to the PFU. As I remember it, the PFU was the last gasp of the online fan community. And we won. Not only that, but we got him to make one of the best funk rock records of the decade in our honor, despite him calling us 'fat punks.'
