Songs suggestive of drug-taking

There are a couple of songs that could be a bit dubious in this regard in my opinion.

One is Spandau Ballet's 'True' which says 'with a thrill in my hand and a pill on my tongue, dissolve the nerves that've just begun'.

It could be just referring to an aspirin, then again it may not.

Another example is The Corrs' 'Only When I Sleep' which contains tell-tale references like 'reaching through my skin' and 'Hawaiian high'

Read through the whole thing and judge for yourself:

There have been a couple of people on here asking if Prince ever took drugs.

The song 'Around The World In A Day' is believed to be a drug taking song. It is either inspired by Beatles records or based on a personal experience.

I never really noticed the drug taking lyrics in SOTT. I was so busy singing along, I didn't think about the lyrics.

And I don't care if Prince took drugs. I think he's living a healthy life now.

Promiscuous, but healthy. biggrin

I dont know anyone in the music scene that didn't do some kind of drugs in the 80s and 90s and i'm sure Prince is no expection in that area...oooh i could tell u some stories of some artists from them days, but i won't lol

Not only with ATWIAD but also the Prince/JB/MJ he looks off his face and not forgetting the black album he was meant to of been E'ing doing it.

Dream factory is all about taking ecstacy & drug culture.

The Future - 'Yellow smiley offered me X' which appears to be a reference to acid tabs as well as ecstacy.

I no - The reason why my voice is so clear is there's no smack in my brain - Is it really only ironic that you can barely hear the last part of that sentence, or was he 'admitting' he had had a problem from which he was recovering?

Furthermore, AnnaStesia is Prince's own account of his "bad trip" on Ecstacy and his resultant epiphany.

This has nothing to do with the oft told Black album cancelling story because simply the song predates it obviously, but Superfunkycalifragisexy sounds like a trippy experience if I ever heard one. stoned

The original "Old Friends 4 Sale" also refers to cocaine - "2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow" (some take that literally, but I believe he's referring to people being in to coke - it fits with the rest of the song). And "Cocaine becomes charmin', but you talk about things you don't know".

The Love We Make is another song that references heroin (in relation to Chris Coleman, it is said) "Put down the needle, put down the spoon".

On Exodus, in one of the segues, Michael B asks Sonny "You ain't been smoking that headache weed again have you?"

Also on Exodus, in "Return of the Bump Squad" there's the line "Get off me jigger before I get perturbed, Find a job, lose the herb (stop smokin', oh no!)"

And, again, in "The Good Life" - "That was the only thing that I wanted 2 do, that was my drug of choice, Left all the funny smellin' cigarettes 2 the American boys"

I'm sure there's more......thinking.............!

If you're going beyond just mind-altering drugs, you can add all the pill references from "Love 4 One Another." Actually, the one that will make a baby never seek political gain is mind-altering, so I guess the song fits either way.

There's this one too:

The Schoolyard -

I was only 16 and her name was Carrie
She was the number one little girl I wanted 2 marry me
She was only 14, but she had the major body
Yeah, this girl was mean
Me and Ace picked Carrie up from school one day
We took her 4 a ride in Ace's car, the music started 2 play
We sat real close, both nervous
Lookin' at each other not knowin' what 2 say

Carrie was a sister
But her eyes kinda made her look Japanese
Her short cut afro, shiny and soft
Her clothes fit 2 please
Ace was a real fast driver
With every turn, Carrie fell in my lap
He asked us where we wanted 2 go
I said "Yeah right, like U need a map!"

The schoolyard, the schoolyard
Gettin' it on in the schoolyard
With a wink and a nod we were off 2 Ace's pod
Like peas who's hangin' 4 a knife

The schoolyard, the schoolyard
Gettin' it on in the schoolyard
We never want it 4 the children of our own
We all pray better seeds we have sown
But one story that is most commonly known
Is gettin' it on in the schoolyard

(Schoolyard)

Ace's girl showed up, that's when the party started jumpin'
Tower Of Power's "Squib Cakes" steady humpin'
I said "Carrie, hmm, do U wanna dance?"
She said "Uh hmm, yeah, like later man, first let me smoke this weed"
I said "Damn, my cologne ain't sayin' shit if this is what she needs"

Yeah, before I knew it, Carrie was seein' double
That's when me and her got into trouble
So much 4 the dance
I started takin' off Carrie's pants

The schoolyard, the schoolyard
Gettin' it on in the schoolyard

(Hey hey.. hey!)

And now boys and girls 4 the graphic part
Close your ears if U ain't got a nasty heart
The schoolyard, the schoolyard
Here we go
Now take a glove, fill it with hot baby lotion and slip it on (Well)
Pull it tight, that's what Carrie was like
One stroke and I was gone
Gone I was, it's true
The schoolyard, the schoolyard

When your schoolyard baby comes home
And it's all that's on their mind
Try 2 remember how U felt your very first time.. oh!

The schoolyard, the schoolyard
Gettin' it on in the schoolyard (Gettin' it on)
We never want it 4 the children of our own
We all pray better seeds we have sown
But one story that is most commonly known
Is gettin' it on in the schoolyard (Gettin' it on, oh)

(Well, gettin' it on.. heh, heh)

The schoolyard (Schoolyard), the schoolyard (Schoolyard)
Gettin' it on in the schoolyard (Boy, U're gettin', yeah)
The schoolyard, the schoolyard (Schoolyard)
Gettin' it on in the schoolyard (Gettin' it on, get.. get.. gettin' it on, yeah)
(Hey!)

superfunkycalifragisexy describes an exctasy trip.like the whole song does.

from the 1st line

"if your body needs water keep dancing 'cause you oughta keep the blood flowing down to your feet"

even the taste

"the bloods real good if you drink it real fast but the after taste just lasts and lasts"

to the side effects

'if you do to much your skin will be sensitive to the touch"

to the come down

"I feel like a clown cuz I'm stripped down
It's all fun and games till the very next day
Till, damn, U don't remember my name"

The 2 friends referred to in that song were Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The references to cocaine were allusions to Big Chick.

The Love We Make refers to Johnathan Melvoin (who died of a drug overdose on tour with Smashing Pumpkins), not Chris Coleman.

Thanks for the corrections and, of course, that's right. I was struggling to remember the right names when typing that post - recalling things about songs which I read years ago is occasionally difficult.....must be my age lol

Hence, I didn't name the "2 friends" originally and ended up putting in the wrong brother - my bad!

Anyways, thanks again wink

The Sacrifice of Victor

Never understood my old friends a laughing (Ha ha ha)
They got high when everything else got wrong (Pass the bowl...)
Dr. King was killed and the streets - they start burnin'
When the smoke was cleared, their high was gone
Education got important, so important 2 Victor
Even more important than Ripple and weed
