We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Over the years there have been many groups who include references to narcotics abuse in their songs. Aerosmith (see http://www.reuters.com/ar...5420091119), for example, use references to 'snorting the breeze' in their songs. 'Breeze' is a slang word for cocaine. The 'I see double up the road' in Ocean Colour Scene's 'The Riverboat Song' is also a possible drug reference.

Some lyrics are more unambiguous. The Small Faces' song 'Here Come The Nice' was a tribute to their drug dealer and was played freely on the radio despite the line 'He knows what I want, he's got what I need. He's always there if I need some speed'.
When you consider that Jimi Hendrix died from a drugs overdose it is fairly undisputable what the subject matter of songs like 'Purple Haze' and 'Spanish Castle Magic' is.

Jim Morrison of The Doors also drugged himself to death and a classic example of a psychedelic song is their 'People Are Strange'. 'When you're strange, faces come out of the rain, when you're strange no-one remembers your name, when you're strange, when you're strange, when you're strange'. Those lyric sound fairly hallucinatory to me, as to the lyrics to 'Moonlight Drive' (see http://www.lyricsspy.com/...lyrics.php

The song 'Sunny Cellophane Skies' by Status Quo also has lyrics which just couldn't be describing anything else other than being high. Judge for yourself:

It isnt a song reference, but on the VH1 Love4OneAnother concert he hit a bong. I think it was during Rock and Roll Is Alive but its been a while. It was blurred out but the cloud of smoke he exhaled wasn't.

There are thousands of acts who have sung about drugs and even more blatantly. And, Status Quo?!!! What a bizarre example, but thanks anyway wink

May I also point out that Jimi Hendrix didn't die of a "drugs overdose", he choked on his own vomit after drinking too much red wine (the good old "legal drug"!). It also doesn't make it "undisputable" about what some of his songs are about. The fact he was well known for taking drugs and the lyrics of the songs are all you need right there!

And nobody knows what Jim Morrison died from, so you can't say he "drugged himself to death". No autopsy was ever done on Jim, so no-one knows what the cause of death was.

I definitely remember it, but I'll need to find it to verify that it was Love4OneAnother. Perhaps someone else remembers for sure which one it was? Definitely a VH1 concert either way.

It was interesting because of how pointless it was. If it tied into a lyric (light us up and take a hit) or something, I would understand. I'm sure in his mind there was some sort of symbolism, but hell if I know what it was....lol

Not all pop songs about drug-taking actually condone or encourage it. There have been a few songs over the years that have given out the opposite message from the Small Faces' 'Here Come The Nice', including 'Just Say No' by the Grange Hill Cast. Was this song ever released in the U.S.?

Also Duran Duran recorded a version of 'White Lines' by Grandmaster Melle Mel (http://en.wikipedia.org/w...on't_Do_It). The reason for them doing this was that they had become drug addicts themselves at one stage.

Paul McCartney has been on record as saying that every time they sang about being "high" it was referring to marijuana. Or if the lyric was "in another mind" or that kind of thing. No fucking great surprises there then.

New Order's World in Motion (1990 World Cup song for England) features the lyrics "It's E for England". New Order said many years later that the E was indeed a reference to ecstasy and how much they laughed knowing the whole country was singing it. Everyone in the know knew wink

Ebeneezer Goode by The Shamen. Do I really need to go into any more depth? The whole fucking song is about nothing else than E. If you never lived then the opening line of the chorus goes "Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode, He's Ebeneezer Goode!"

It made number one in the British charts during the BBC's Drug Awareness Week. Obviously everyone already was wink

On a side note the band are purposefully misspelt. Mr C said that although it should be shaman, with an a, everything was better with an e in the middle. Can't argue with that.

There is a line from the album 'Free Piece Sweet' by Dodgy which says 'the simple things in life I've found are comin' up from beneath the ground' which could be a possible drug reference.

Billy Joel's 'I've Loved These Days' contains a reference to cocaine use (see http://www.sing365.com/mu...700021B8F1)

Here is another song by Half Man Half Biscuit which contains a cocaine reference:

Surely the topic here is "suggestive" not "explicit". Big difference which everybody except the initial poster failed to recognise. And me.

Welcome to the dawn, the reason my voice is so clear is that I don't do smack (Eye No)

Light us up and take a hit (Now from the Gold Experience)

Technicolor junkie in a funky square (Good Love)

The last was written at a time Prince may have been dabbling with ecstasy and possibly acid. The line suggests a LSD like hallucination and funky square may mean his ability to produce music at the time (1986-1987), its possible that line, he was describing himself. Of course we all know he went off drugs after that and the whole Black album, Camille Spooky Electric thing died off with his drug experiences.

There is also evidence apparently Prince would drink himself stupid with wine.

Don't polish the halo yet.

I remember reading in Tina Turners book, "Whats love got to do with it" that Ike got into Cocaine in a big way in the late 60s and 70s and on a 1970 album it mentioned that there was a song called "Contact High" in which the lyrics are about how high Ike gets from snorting cocaine and smoking Marijuana, and then how much Tina didn't want to sing this garbage and had to beaten into singing it on stage. Apparently by the 80s, Ike's nostrils had sucked so much cocaine his septum was gone .

Apparently too in the early 80s, some loony Christian group claimed certain rock songs had hidden drug messages in backmasking them (Playing them backwards), Queen's "Another one bites the dust" had when played backwards "Start to smoke marijuana, Its fun to smoke marijuana"

Even Run DMC were accused of drug lyrics with the line "I keep a bag of Cheeba in my locker"

And then in the 90s gangsta rap was full of lyrics about smoking huge amounts of Marijuana "We smoking trees", "Wake up smoke a pound of bud every day" And then you have Cypress Hill whose main claim to fame was that they all loved smoking Marijuana.

As far as I am concerned drugs suck. I just finished watching some show about Heroin addicts in Chicago and Newark and its sickening what that shit does to people. We don't really have heroin, coke or crack here, its all p (Methamphetamine)

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I think Prince was an "every once in awhile" user of various substances. No proof but Im pretty certain Wendy and Lisa introduced him to LSD, Susannah brought the ecstasy, hence the sounds of 84-87.

And about ecstasy: the story of the Black Album has always been that he asked Cat what E was all about. She got him some, leading to the bad trip and Lovesexy...if that was his first time and led him to cancel the Black Album, how the hell did he come up with Superfunkycalifragisexy? That is a detailed description of a night of rollin on E...and squirrelmeat=ecstasy, right? He was definitely dabbling...or he was perpetratin'!

As for drug induced lyrics, Sly and the Family Stone's "There's a Riot Goin' On" and "Fresh" are chock full!

I switched from coke to pep and I'm a connoisseur...bout time!

Sorry for the double post, but forgot a couple...

Around the World in a Day

Open your heart, open your mind, a train is leaving all day

A wonderful trip thru our time and laughter is all u pay

...

The little one will escort u 2 places within your mind...

Is that a "trip" or a "trip"? And is Prince the little escort, or is it that little tab you put on your tongue?

Life Can Be So Nice

Shivering in your embrace, this is better than a trip...

What kinda trip would that be?

Yeah...he dabbled.

You've just jogged my memory there as to what my next post was going to be. I've read that 'White Lines' by Grandmaster Melle Mel is actually believed to say 'Take drugs' when played backward despite having an anti-drug message.

As for New Order, their song 'True Faith' is believed to be about the struggle to wean themselves off drugs.

um, if you record a snare drum with reverb on it, then reverse the tape, you get a fantastic build up to the attack. But only if you dub it over with the original snare recording.

and if you play youtube in reverse you get a fantastic art
