I choose "Adore" as my favorite, but "The Beautiful Ones" is so superb for how it fits the concept of Purple Rain as well as an example of romantic angst.

"Adore" is an awesome R&B/Soul/Gospel flavored classic that proves Ray Charles to be correct: The only difference between gospel and blues is that they say "Lawd, Lawd," and we say "Baby, Baby." The organ, the horns, and Prince's vocal delivery are soul piercing if not haunting in their desire to connect the physical with the metaphysical, attempting to show that the best (most fulfilling and satisfying) sex is love making or that sex is better (most fulfilling and satisfying) when it is a manifestation of love. Thus, passion is really about the yearning to bridge the gap between body and soul. However, "The Beautiful Ones" is an example of Prince's genius of taking a standard style or genre and making it something his own. Stylistically, what is "The Beautiful Ones"? Is it Soul, R&B, Pop? Is it one of those Rock ballads of the 80s? It seems just as comfortable next to Billy Idol's "Eyes Without a Face" as it is next to Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO." "The Beautiful Ones" is all of that; it is Prince.

They are both phenomenal songs. Classics. Perfect in their own way.

It's reeeeally close, but The Beautiful Ones wins for me. I just prefer the conviction in Prince's vocals and the lyrics in that song.

They both are incredibly masterful arrangements, I would never want to get rid of either of them. Prince's finsest work, definitely, but for the sake of conversation I would keep The Beautiful Ones. The Beautiful ones is more of a unique sounding piece of music. More identifiably 'Prince', whereas Adore is a bit of a paen to old soul songs. That's great, but my preference is for that 80s majestic electro Prince. Love those anolog synths and weird sounds and screaming.

id have to say adore awsome tune but not a patch on the beautiful ones

Beautiful Ones. Especially if you add in the extra lines that were cut from the released version, and add the live stuff like on the official live video (IIRC there's a moment when the live drums go out of sync and seem to double, and it just slay me).

Adore is wonderful, but more a case of Prince doing an established art form. TBO is much more unique, plus you get the juxtaposition of the cold music versus the deep emotions.

Adore

Both are legendary, but the diversity and overall beauty and sheer vocal wizardry of Adore wins out.

Adore is a masterpiece. It's on a whole different level. It's arguably the greatest ballad of all time!

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

i totally agree

cause when he writes a song about losing someone he loves

it just turns out really good and you start to symphatize his pain

"Adore" was his ode to Susannah

it's twisted but it's also very lovely

Actually the Beautiful Ones & Adore are odes 2 Susannah

the Beautiful Ones was written to win her affections

My keep choice though is the Beautiful Ones

the tide build is just awesome, I love listening to the un-edited version

But the feeling is just crazy it washes over you in a way that Adore can't touch.

I love the guitar work also on the song

I like nothing better than being very drunk and playing "the Beautiful Ones" extremely loudly on a home stereo.

Impossible choice, but Ones takes it.

"Let me tell U a story... The Beautiful Ones sometimes U lose. Let me tell U baby... Sometimes U win! Yes U do!! Lookey here... I said sometimes, sometimes, I get so confused!! Yes I do!! But I I said right now I know what I want! I want U!! Whoo!!!"

I felt like that quote from the extended version of "The Beautiful Ones". Reading this thread I felt as if I was watching an episode of "Deadliest Warrior" on the History Channel. Everyone brings up valid points as 2 why one is better than the other. I waffled back & forth on both songs after mutilple listens. After many simulations, wink I had to vote in favor of the angst in "The Beautiful Ones".

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Adore, & agree it is THE GREATEST ballad ever written... uhh, wait a minute I may have to get back to you on this!! J/K!!

I'm going to go with... The Beautiful Ones. What's better than his best song?

It took me a long time to realize - it's basically a new wave doo wop ballad. Somehow he mixed space age with a 50s make out song - it made Apollonia cry and it makes me cry too!

The end, in the movie, where he's lying on the stage, holding hands with the audience. Best Prince moment ever.

Well - have to agree with everyone that they are both great songs. Two of his best for sure and that is saying something. I think the whole sweep of the story edges it for Beautiful Ones for dramatic impact but Adore is easier to listen to on a more regular basis. Also if you want to play a Prince song to your new girlfriend without wanting to come across as a bit of a mental case then I would pick Adore everytime.

In my head I'd be singing The Beautiful Ones.

Where did you get that Adore was about Vanity? Vanity was long gone and Prince and Susannah were nearly married around the time he wrote Adore.

The Beautiful Ones was about Susan Moonsie, if anybody, I thought.

Adore. It's pure emotion. The Beautiful ones is too cold and electronic, not really much by way of a soul ballad, soul being the keyword here. It needed to be switched out for Erotic City on the album.
