The Vault...Old Friends 4 Sale

Audio CD (23 Aug 1999)

Number of Discs: 1

Label: Warner Bros.

The Rainbow Children.

I don't even pay attention to the lyrics, but the music on that album is kick-ass. He was making the music that he wanted to make, with no pandering to the masses.

- Yes, it´s a musical trip. Prince seemed completely free there. And it had some of his funkiest tunes, like ´everlasting now´ and ´Family Name´.

Why do so many of you like the Rainbow children, if not for the silly lyrics you have crap songs on it like Wedding Feast, Muse to the Pharoah, Family name and Deconstruction. The only good tracks are Last December and 1 + 1 + 1 = 3, the rest is unlistenable with that Darth Vader voice, at least on all the others you have songs.

Seriously what is so great about it (One person said it had a live feel, where from - hell?)

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I'm not a great fan of The Rainbow Children but I will try to defend it a little bit. For me I think the last four tracks ("She Loves Me 4 Me," "Family Name," "The Everlasting Now" and "Last December") are amonst the best things he has done in the last twenty years. The rest of it is kind of hit and miss.

I also dig the live drumming and the relative experimentation of the album. While I do like the albums he has released circa 2004-2010 more than The Rainbow Children I do miss the musical adventurousness of that album. I'm not a big fan of some of the "new agey" type elements of the album and the lyrics are a bit of a distraction but as far as the music goes I do wish that he would try something like this again. His recent albums have been fairly pop oriented and I think a lot of listeners are ready for a different sound.

Well thank you, a proper and sensible answer, in a way, the live music feel of it, does help the album a bit and I think there is a lot less fluff and machine generated noize than there is on the new albums, he was still at least being bold by not playing it safe. The one point I respect about the Rainbow children, is when Prince made it, he didn't care about what people would think of it. That same attitude helped turned Dirty Mind into the cult success it became, but didn't work quite so well here, still he was being adventurous as you say.

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

For me personally. 20Ten is shaping up to be that cd i'd grab off the shelf most readily.

Until now, it was probably 3121 or Emancipation. If Emancipation were shorter I think it'd be my top choice up til now.
