Album/CD count Hello, I came across a question today from a coworker concerning Prince. I was talking about his new CD and how great it was, and of course the first thing out of his mouth was "he's still making cds". I said yes and said this is like his 28th-30th release. He wanted to know if he has the most new material out while alive...not like B.I.G. and Tupac...he seems to think that Elvis did, he also thought The Beatles did but I know that they don't. Any idea what the actual count of cd's so far and does he have the most? PUSH YOUR WAY UP 2 THE FRONT, AND SHAKE YOUR MOTHER FUCKIN DOO LOOSE!! | |

Without even looking it up I know it's not the Beatles. Not sure about Elvis. I know that Van Morrison is WAY past Prince. He's well over 40, I believe. Good question, I shall now do the magic search dance... | |

Yeah, I think Van's last was his 45th. Pretty sure.
I got some crazy results, though. Evidently there are some acts/artists, both extremely famous and lesser known ones, who are well over 100. I found one result that said Elvis released 100, but I think they might have been refering to singles. I also found one that said the Oak Ridge Boys have released 200!
Ah, here's a pretty solid answer. Rolling Stones released 55 albums; and if you want to include single artists, Elvis Presley released 76.
Someone else said this, "MAJOR CORRECTION: I personally own 319 commercially released Grateful Dead albums, and I'm still looking for more. I'm aware of at least a dozen more that I don't yet own. I doubt any band can come even close to that. THE REAL ANSWER IS THE GRATEFUL DEAD, HANDS-DOWN."

Totally off-topic BUT i will never understand why you count NPS as an NPG album.
P played almost all of the instruments on that album himself, he composed all of the songs, he arranged all of the songs, he produced all of the songs, he's on lead vocals, his picture is on the cover (it's not the NPG), it was promoted as the new prince album at that time - still you all pretend that this is NO prince album! I just dont get it!

Miles Davis and Frank Zappa would be other contenders. They were two other prolific MFs.
But there's really no definitive answer to this. It really comes down to what you classify as an 'album'...
Should compilations/"best ofs" be counted?
Should associated artist albums be counted? (ala Elixer - as much as Prince album as anything he's done)
Should remix albums be counted? (ala Rave In2 or The Beatles' Love)
Should live albums be counted?
Should box-sets be counted? (ala those old jazz box-sets that contain 20 takes of the one track)
Should albums released after their death be counted? (ala all those posthumous Hendrix albums )
Should albums from the 90s (which typically ran for 60+ mins) be compared with albums from the 1960s (which typically ran for 40mins)?
... the list goes on...

Haha I love this question. Yeah, I agree with you. It's as much a Prince album as anything he's done. On my CD shelf, it stands between Crystal Ball and The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale. But the discography police will insist that, regardless, Prince himself chose to attribute the album to the New Power Generation. I think most people regard NPS as a Prince album. But regardless of who played what, who is on the cover blah blah, NPS is the 3rd New Power Generation album. No one is pretending that it is not a Prince album, the facts are the facts.

You left off Kamasutra. If you leave off the ones with just duplicates or repeats (so the hits wouldn't be included, but the b sides would), how many actual CDs is that as several have 2 or 3 CDs of music? Ok, what about the Black Album? My copy doesn't credit it to anyone. Since you can't credit it to anyone, then...it's not a Prince album. Survey says: NPS is a Prince album. One of my best friends says ONA Piano is not a Prince album...so I guess everyone has an opinion... | |

Also in England - New Power Generation, Gett Off, and Cream maxi singles were count as Album on the charts at the time, should they be counted

Everyone has an opinion... Luckily, we don't have to rely on people's "opinions" when it comes to these questions, we have FACTS.
The fact is that "Newpower Soul" was released under the name "New Power Generation", not "Prince or "
While it's true that the aborted 1987 release of "The Black Album" had no artist officially named. The 1994 release officially credited the album to "Prince". As all official copies had a sticker on the front cover crediting it as such.
There's no argument about "One Nite Alone..." piano. It's a "Prince" album and is credited that way on the cover. So again, no "opinion" necessary, the facts are the facts.
However, it's worth noting that "C-Note", "The Chocolate Invasion" and "The Slaughterhouse" were NOT credited "Prince". In fact they were not credited to any specific artist at the time of their release. It is logical to credit "C-Note" to "Prince & the NPG" and that is how the ONA Live and It Ain't Over albums are credited, and C-Note is part of that. However, Prince considered The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse as 'compilations' rather than 'proper' albums, and the official subtitles for both albums were "Trax from the NPG Music Club, volumes 1 & 2". All but one of the tracks on The Chocolate Invasion were credited to "Prince", so it could be seen as a "Prince" album. (Though it could be said that Prince deliberately put the "New Power Generation" track on that album to stop this from happening). "The Slaughterhouse" is very much a compilation though, with some tracks being credtied to "Prince", some to "

It's a bit silly to discuss weither the NPG, Madhouse, The Family and other such albums should be counted. Prince recorded them and released them under other names but technically they're Prince albums. A full discography should include video albums, internet albums as well as albums released under a pseudonym, albums that were totally composed for other artists and even collaborative albums (such as "Times Squared" or "GCS 2000"). In such a case we get around 70 albums in 30 years.
That's a lot but i think James Brown & Frank Zappa released around as many albums. Ryuichi Sakamoto also released around that much if not more, and the winner of all times probably is Bill Laswell: in his case if you count all the albums released under pseudonyms and all the collaborative albums (excluding the albums he only produced without playing on them) we'd probably be somewhere around 150 or 200 albums. The main difference between Laswell and Prince isn't that Laswell records more, but that Laswell releases kind of everything he records while Prince keeps dozens of albums' worth of material in his vault. It depends whether we are talking studio albums, live albums, compilations, re-releases etc
It's interesting that Wikipedia lists Bob Dylan and Prince as both having released 33 original studio albums (20Ten being Prince's 33rd, Together Through Life being Bob's 33rd).
The geek in me really wants to do an album by album comparison, see how many Bob wins compared to Prince!

Basically that'd be my list. Don't even start me with The War being or not being an album, ok? The year is not always the release year but more likely the year the recordings were completed (thus putting the B-Sides and Ultimate CD's at odd places). I only included side-projects if Prince was responsible 4 the whole album concept and more than 75% of the music. I've added Minneapolis Genius because he plays on every track. The way my list was compiled was from a post by Boris in 2004 and then adding albums from the PrinceVault discography. I credited the albums as they were on that site. I follow and subscribe to both Boris' and the folks over at PrinceVault's logic, as I know quite a bit of thought is always put into their categorization of Prince's discography. I also added my two cents to the equation.
Sure, the Madhouse albums could be considered Prince LPs, but of course they are pseudonym releases, as are the NPG titles.
Should "Best Of" albums be considered? Certainly they should be listed for what they are.
I'm on the fence about inclusion of The Undertaker, as it was never released. The copies floating around are officially pressed CDs, but were coated in an attempt to destroy them. Luckily some enterprising collectors found a way to clean the shellac off of a few copies. It's basically the same reason that there is no 1987 listing of The Black Album. I guess there's no absolute rational for a discography anyway so it's up to each of us to decide what's in it and what's not. I like the way Bernie Worrell handles his own discography: as long as he's on every track of an album he considers it HIS album no matter who it was credited to and even if he was only a sideman
