Kids and Prince

my son was sitting at the other end of the couch tonight, quietly humming a song.....

it was controversy mushy

he got all embarrassed when i asked, (after about 11 notes) "is that controversy?"

heart

what thing has your kid done lately involving P?

seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret

I have three sons. They love the "Raspberry Beret" video with a passion. We were watching it yesterday, and they all had their toy guitars out, playing along. My four year old knows most of the words to it, which is a little awkward when you listen to the lyrics, but it all goes over his head fortunately.

I have a two-year-old cousin that likes to talk (and sing) a lot. One day while I was babysitting her, I started singing Purple Rain and she picked it up. She only knows the chorus but she sings it all the time. She has 3 older sisters and they watch videos on youtube quite often. If she sees them on the computer, she'll ask them to play Purple Rain so she can sing and dance. It's one of the cutest things ever.

"MOM! DAD'S ON PRINCE DOT ORG AGAIN!"

"Dad, were you on Prince dot org on my computer? I'm gonna delete it." <----This coming from my 7-year old who, somehow, knew how to check the history in her web browser.

my 4 yr old daughter sounds so adorable when she sings "everybody loves meee"

and my 8 yr old son just recently started liking lets go crazy...

My 15 yr old just texted me yesterday while I was at work to tell me that Purple Rain was on VH1 & she was watching it and asked me "why is he so protective and jealous" in the movie.

Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

Cute, but sadly the only age ever that should be singing that.

Kinda strange, kinda awesome.

This spring, my 3-year-old daughter would cry if we didn't listen to "All Day, All Night" in the car. Now, she uses "Shock-a-locka" as part of her everyday vocabulary. I'm so proud. Thanks Box o' Chocolates!

I did spend a lot of time forwarding past the "oh what a beautiful ass" intro, though.

LOL! Usually I get the same response from my son, however I called in on Ernest's radio show several weeks ago and after I got connected he shouted out, "Are you talkin' to Prince?" !! He sounded a bit excited at the moment and it was good for a laugh. lol

My 5 year old was listening to Prince, even before she got here. I used to play "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" while her Mom was carrying her. When she was an infant, the song calmed her during fussy periods. Just last night, she asked me to play the song I used to play when she was "in Mommy's tummy." She is also a huge fan of "Everybody Loves Me," as am I.

When MJ passed, there was an 80s countdown on TV and while my 10 yr old cousin and I were waiting for MJ to be #1, Let's Go Crazy came on. I had fun telling her about Purple Rain and what I knew of the 80s and she was fascinated, especially when I said Prince would've done Bad with MJ.

It made me feel old though. falloff

I often have my mp3 on shuffle in the car. Wedding Feast came on. My 4 yr old said "That's a funny song!" She said the samething for Lolita!
My kids used to dance to 3121 when it first came out - my oldest was 2 and would show the numbers 3 1 2 1 with her fingers. She used to dance to TRC too and would ask for Prince when we put on music.
A propos Raspberry beret - I teach English at school in a non- English speaking country. I taught RB to my 7th graders. They loved it ( had never heard of P of course - one asked if it was MJ LOL ). The other teachers thought it was cool I taught the song but when they heard it was for 7th grade not, say, 10th, it raised a few eyebrows. LOL but, hey, I was listening to LPWM when I was in 7th grade! (don't know what I'd have done if a teacher played it on class tho lol

My son is 15 months old and he is fascinated by ONA on the ONA piano and voice album. When he starts screaming in the car I put it on and he instantly stops. He starts screaming again as soon as the song is over. Sometimes I have to put it on repeat. Good thing it's one of my favorites too.

The opposite for me with that album I'm afraid - my sons 3 and when I put that CD on in the car there's swearing, sobbing, screaming, throwing things around ...and then I have to compose myself and pick him up from nursery wink

I don't have my own kids, but I have a couple of stories with my students.

A few months ago in a Spanish lesson we were reading a profile of Penélope Cruz which mentioned that she knows Prince. One of my students said "Really, how cool!". I was quite surprised (this is a fairly middle-class secondary school in the North of England) and I asked her if she knew who Prince was. She said "Everybody knows Prince!". At this point a lad in the group said "Prince y la Revolución" and sang a bit of "Purple Lluvia". He really made me laugh.

Another kid, who plays the guitar quite well, asked me who my favourite player was. I told him I don't really listen to guitar music, but I asked him if he had heard Prince play. A few weeks later he showed my his music coursework, for which he had written about his 10 favourite players. Prince was his number 8. He also told me he had only discovered Prince after I told him. (He wasn´t my most enthusiastic student and I doubt he learnt a lot of Spanish, but at least I taught hem something biggrin !)
