I didn't know this. That's Fucking Ridiculous. Moonbeam is the Obvious choice. I had always imagined him adding Baby, Your a Trip into 1999 instead of Free, but Free has got to go "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

I've seen it mentioned with love before, but I'll have to say "Its gonna be a beautiful night" Its just such a long... drawn out song... with nothing interesting happening. and I like long jams, but I think its the only song I couldn't get into from Sign of The Times At this point in history, we have a choice to make

CO-SIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Runner-up . . . . 'Arms of Orion.' I know what he was thinking but with that being the result? He should have buried it. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Ok, The answer is Arms of Orion. Now lock the thread. Come on, people! So what if it's the obvious answer. That's what I liked about finding a Prince online community all those years ago - finding out I'm not alone in loving JIR and hating Arms of Orion! "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

Oh it's gotta be Annie Christian. "Annie Christian Anti Christ, until you're crucified, I'll live my life in taxi cabs..." Huh? I get the whole anti Christ theme - as heavy handed as it is- but how is moving from taxi to taxi gonna keep him safe from the devil? If the devil smells like I think he does, he's driving cab somewhere in Chicago, at best showers once a month, and tried to choke the life outa me and my fiancee last year. Annie Christian, hairy fuck, until your taint is scrubbed, I'll live my life out of taxi cabs.

I take back everything I said. Annie Christian is the worst song ever written by ANYONE!!!!

I've always loved this song - musically and lyrically, but one man's meat etc.......
Its probably the most "anti-music" Prince has ever sounded and I love it for that. The main keyboard part is great, the discordant guitar adds to the melancholy and frustration and there's that lovely big synth at the end.
The lyrics are also some of the most socially aware he has written and whilst he was still quite young. Its punk in its attitude and intent - experimental and anti-establishment. I like the fact he "foresees" one of my favourite sections from the genius of comedy, Bill Hicks - its where Bill is talking about how "has anyone noticed how it always seems to be the good guys that get killed and the little demons get to run amock? John Lennon - assassinated.....Kennedy - assassinated......Reagan - wounded!" (She killed John Lennon, Shot him down cold, They tried to kill Reagan, Everyone says "Gun Control"!)
With regards to the "I'll live my life in taxi cabs" - well, in my view, all great art should get you thinking, regardless of whether you feel you understand the artist's intent - if it gets you thinking about it, then it has a certain merit! I don't think he suggests that it will "keep him safe from the devil". To me, it just suggests that his solution is to keep moving on (physically and spritually) or even just keep getting away from the madness. One could argue that this is not a very positive way to deal with evil (rather than getting involved and taking action to fight against it), but the song is fairly desperate in it's tone - in that, there is so much evil everywhere, things going on that are just senseless and seem beyond anyone's control, that Prince feels resigned to the fact that the best thing is just to try and keep out of its way.
It does also seem to be something that Prince may like to do - just get away from it all in a car as he's mentioned it in a few songs - the obvious one is Lady Cab Driver, where he just wants to get in a cab and get away from all his troubles (and, eventually, shag the cab driver lol - but what a great stress alleviator sex is!). And at the end of The Holy River (or is it the segue at the beginning of THR - can't remember, haven't had "Disc 2" on in quite some time), when he's on the phone, he's out "you know, I'm just driving" and something about "its as quiet as it gets". We've also been told that he'd go out in his car and listen back to a song he'd just created (Da Bang, for example). So, you know, I think he's just using one of his preferred forms of escapism and putting it in a song in a way that sounds both wistful and ambiguous.
With regard to his "wackest" song of the 80s.....hmmm, well that's a toughie because there really aren't many contenders! I'd probably have to say Arms of Orion - as someone said earlier, I got the intention with this, just don't think he quite pulled it off, its just never really settled with me. Although, if Graffiti Bridge (the song) was recorded in the 80s (I know it was released in 1990) it would easily have got my vote! You're right, "wacky" (Americans tend to spell it with an h - whacky) doesn't mean bad, it means "crazy" (lol - you can't say wacky means wacked - you can't use the same word to explain the word you're trying to define! That's like saying crazy means crazed! hehehe)
But, the OP didn't ask what is Prince's "w(h)ackiest" song (in other words, which is his most crazy), he asked what is Prince's "wackest" song and "wack" in American slang most definitely means bad. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Oh, "Ronnie" w/o a doubt. But I still love it and NEVER skip it. Dated? Sure... but it's still fun. The early 80s had a lot of great political songs (Regan will do that to you). You expected to hear it from hardcore leftwing bands like Dead Kennedy's or Black Flag or The Minutemen... but from Prince? Hell ya! It's wacky as hell, but wacky = good for this hombre.
It's almost like there is an "event horizon" for stupidity - once you fall below that line, you're too stupid to know you're stupid.

There are many tracks I'm not fond of...but probably the one I can say I just flat out don't like is "Annie Christian." And it appears on probably the most uneven album of the 80s (it's between Controversy and Around the World in a Day) =0P Brace yourself
