I think 20Ten compares to.... Go ahead, start posting your full album comparisons... Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

Definitely one of the best since TGE.

won't this already get covered in the Press & Fan Reviews sticky?

i think its a fusion of a few albums. It takes elements of 1999, controversy, a lil bit of new power soul (sticky like glue),MPLSound but 1000000xs better [Edited 7/8/10 20:48pm]

Is 20Ten the evolution (or regression) of the Lotusflow3r set?
Was LF the 1st step to getting back to a "classic" Prince sound? Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

If Controversy and MPLSoUND were to have a baby it would have given birth to 20Ten ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

as I said in another thread, this album sounds like the companion to LF that MPLSound was trying to be in that on LF, he got relaxed with the rock/organic thing. I like (most of) MPLSound a lot, but in retrospect, it sounds forced compared to 20TEN, like he was making himself rediscover how to make that sound work for him again. that said, swapping out the better tracks on there for the weaker stuff on 20TEN (WIS, SOE) and adding a couple more would make an absolute home run out of the combined material.

A mix of Controversy/1999/SOTT/Lovesexy His best in 23 years indeed! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I liked MPLSound but this is what MPLSound should have sounded like. There are so many elements of that classic MPLS sound on here, especially the stuff from 1979-1982 IMHO. It's a very enjoyable and fun album. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I said it on another thread, previously. I think MPLSoUND sounded more like the late-80's, Post PR, MPLS sound where as 20Ten harks back, mostly, to the pre-PR MPLS sound.
I think MPLSoUND has stronger high points than this one, though...

It's too early for 20TEN song abbreviations. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

While the sounds of the two albums are nothing alike, "20Ten" reminds me of "Come" for the fact it seems kind of reeled off and possibly (probably?) will be underappreciated at first but will be considered a minor classic in hindsight. I definitely didn't get "Come" upon release but it's an album I've grown to love over the years. I can see lots of fans having a similar experience with "20Ten."

Sounds like mixing Contreversy, 1999, and Graffiti Bridge.
He's added a fresh sound to it.
I like it. I don't LOVE some of the songs, but the overall album is listenable. It's getting repeated spins so that must mean, something.

I think it compares to some mundane pop shit I wouldn't listen to if I was paid to.
The best since TGE? Glimpses of SOTT. Come off it. If it wasn't Prince you'd say this was dishwater so just because it is Prince, it's still dishwater.

I guess some folks hear what they wanna hear, but to me, I'm with you, it's not this era's SOTT at all.

Muscially, THIS is the kind of Prince album that we were expecting him to make all these years when were getting sub par stuff like Planet Earth, 3121 and Lotus Flower.

It's basically MPLSound (Good Version).
There's nothing on it that makes you go 'Oh damn that's something next', but it's really, really good. It's a Prince album. There's something about it.
I hate to say this, because I am a massive, massive hater, but it's pretty good. Spreading heavy funk since 2008: theheaviestfunkintheworld.wordpress.com

As many have already stated, this is the album MPLSound should've been like (and it's alittle better than that album also). Production-wise, this has the feel of 1981-1987 Prince mixed with the best of 3121, Planet Earth and LotusFlow3r. Now I will say that LotusFlow3r still shits all over this record and for those who have said that this is his best record since TGE or Sign 'O' The Times, shame on you. Overall, this is a solid and listenable album. Check me out and add me on:

OK, yeah. I'm a bit bored with it already. lol It's pretty good though--just the songs I don't like seem to drag the entire thing down a bit--there's just too much stuff on it that I don't care for. The good songs are pretty darned good, but not "wow good", and the boring songs are boring but not terrible. Overall, it's one of those albums I'll skip tracks on, so I'll probably just pull the songs I like off of it and place them in a compilation. He's doing retro pretty good though, I'll give him that The weakness of the album is that there are 2 songs that immediately have melodies that stick in your mind much like 1999/Little Red Corvette stick in your mind. The rest of the songs, don't really do that. I do like his deep register voice in one of the ballads, but the tune was meh. Great vocals/so-so song. I would place it on par with Lotusflow3r but far more retro (controversy/1999 and Graffiti Bridge smashed together).

I agree with this. It's nothing compared to those brilliant gems, but it's a good album. Very listenable. It's about what I expected. He's got to pull people in, and the songs can't afford to be too artsy-fartsy. He's trying to 'grow' his fanbase, and each time he does that (like D&P and Rave Un2), the songs aren't terribly challenging. I like the uptempo songs alot though--except for that VERY STRANGE closing track. lawd

That. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

20Ten: great sound, I love 8 out of 10 songs, not bad.
It's not a classic like PR or SOTT, far from.
still a very good album, but in a different lower league than the WB albums.
about 8/10 for now, maybe more or less later.
MPLSound is what it sounds like if I have to choose 1 album.
This is a lot better than 3121 and Planet Earth, imo. Prince 4Ever.

Co-sign with a big fat EXACTLY!!! The slow jams sound like typical R&B shite that I hate, the pop songs are amateurish as hell, and Prince should NEVER try to do Hip Hop, not now not ever. He's still writing lyrics from his head and not his heart or soul, he's still...aw fuck it.
