I really hate that guy. He ruined the Lotusflow3r performances on Leno. He is a big hot dog - like he is playing a real instrument. Prince lets him solo 4 some reason. If he hurries, he can catch the outbound bus that Tamar is on - I can only hope.

In answering your question... I LOVE it.
LOVE it.
Prince obviously likes the energy he brings 2 his instrument, which is high energy.
He raised the roof on "Ol Skool Company" on Leno, as Prince did.
I appreciate high energy, passionate players... like Shiela E, as a great example.

I hated him at the Conga Room gig last year & hate him now. Almost as bad as John Popper. He looked like he was going to eat it most of the time.

I usually love harmonica as played by Stevie Wonder or Toots Thielemans.
But I can't bear this Yonnet guy. He can't stay silent for a couple of seconds, he doesn't play PHRASES, he just blows and blows and blows.
Boring and tiring to my taste.

...and he's the most contrary thing to VERSATILE.
Whatever he's playing over, regardless of the type of track, he's always playing the same.
Just spitting tasteless notes that go nowhere.

This is what so many crossover sax players like Mike Phillips (wo is no. 2 on my hated Prince sidemen list). The average person at a concert is impressed by long note and alot of playing - nuiance and phrasing is lost on them. That is why these kind of players get work - they hype up the lowest common denominator in the audience.

To me, harmonica just does not fit in/into/ or within Prince's music! And, I agree with nearly everyone here- the guy just does not impress me. Maybe he is ok playing certain types of music but the songs I have heard him play with Prince- just weak, added nothing and actually sounded like noise or a distraction to me. If Prince insists on giving this guy a chance, he should have him play on something more suitable, more bluesy type numbers like "Satisfied."

I agree, he's talented but the harmonica just doesn't fit
Is he going to get the next solo for Purple Rain? or Guitar?

Love Prince...Hate the harmonica!

YES. The stuff he plays sounds annoying as Hell. I can't believe people here like what this guy brings.

After seeing him live in Vienna, he's quite good. Not as annoying as people say.

What performances can we hear him play? I love Stevie's harmonica playing and its nice to see Prince pay homage and bring that into his music. Stevie Wonder = EARTH

I hate harmonicas. When I hear them, I feel like I'm out in a boring, lonely field in the hot ass sun listening to a damn train whistle off in the distance. . . . [Edited 7/15/10 7:23am] Andy is a four letter word.

Completely agree.
Frederic Yonnet is superb, and he brought bags of enthusiasm, drama and energy to the Arras show.
Harmonica works brilliantly as an alternative to a bigger horn section and fits brilliantly with Prince's music because it's so powerful, emotive and funky.
LOVE HARMONICA AND FREDERIC YONNET IS FANTASTIC. Somewhere Here On Earth
