I don't think MJ's dripped either, I've never known of him having activator juice (though I can believe Marlon, Jermaine and Randy did ). Then again who knows?
I do believe Prince added shine to it lol
I wondered if he ever used Afro Sheen in the '70s.
I'm almost certain he did! You couldn't get a fro like his without it!

"Beautiful people use Afro Sheen" Some things you never forget.
I guess it wasn't greasy enough to technically be called a Jheri Curl.
Yup, I always thought this was a Jheri curl. It did sort of look like curl and the way the "baby hair" was gelled down... you really couldn't do that with a perm and blow dry... the hair would look too straight, not wavy curly the way his hair looked close to the hairline.
thanks for posting the picture.

That's not a jherri curl! It's a tightly rolled relaxer/perm.
This is what jherri curls looked like:
But remember the "wave nuveau" curls? They were basically jheri curls rolled on rollers instead of skinny perm rods. But the chemicals used and the maintenance was similar. Also the hairspray was not really drippy. I had one. But really it was pretty dry with just a slight sheen and no grease. I was really allergic to that drippy curl activator. I never used anything on my hair except on shampoo day. and my curls were big and bouncy looking.
Sorry to go off subject. I digress.
I still think Prince had some sort of Jheri curl. Wave Nuveau was probably in use in hair salons of celebrities way before someone packaged the system and sold it to the rest of us.

Yes, I do remember Wave Nuveau that's how I copied Prince's Purple Rain look for my own hair.
It was a perm...short for permanent wave...even though it wasn't permanent because I had to get it a touched up every 4 to 6 weeks because it made my hair grow like hell. So I can go with thinking that is what Prince had also but never, ever could I agree that he had a jherri curl.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

yeah, MJ had a more droppy drippy curl...even though it was dry looking compared to the brothers in my neighborhood.
But I stand by Prince with some sort of "permanent wave" with large rollers used in the process instead of perm rods.
And also, I don't think Prince's hair style of 1999/PR era was the same as the one from Thieves in the temple. Think of how his hair looked in ATWIAD. It went completely straight like back in the early 80's (after For You). I think you could add relaxer over wave nouveau to straightened but you couldn't put wave nouveau over relaxer beause the curls wouldn't take.
Prince relaxed his hair after PR and has been straight ever since.

Ok - this is going to sound like a question from a white girl ... but what is Afro Sheen and how do you use it to get an Afro like that?
BTW - is that Prince wearing jeans?
It was a of line styling products for afros back in the '70's. I don't remember how they worked because I was too young but I do remember the awesome afros that my relatives had and there was always Afro Sheen products around the house.
Here's an old commercial I found on Youtube, that'll give you some idea of what it was.

during the Purple Rain era Prince was at airports wearing scarfs. under the scarf he had rollers in his hair to keep the curl in his perm. Brown Mark wore a jheri curl wig

This is a little before my time as well. but I think afro sheen was a spray you could spray on your hair the way holding srpay is sprayed on hair except it adds a thin coat of oil/moisturizer and a slight sheen to hair. Black hair and especially natural Black hair is very dry. Adding moisture is essential. Unfortunately back in those days the Afro sheens were made with mineral oil which is a petroleum product which coats the hair shaft but doesn't penetrate the shaft.. so in essence your hair becomes even drier using those types of products.
But I digress. What I also want to point out that the big afros of the 70's also needed a product called a ... I think a Blow Out. Prince had one, the Jackets had them and also the Sylvers.
Most Black people's fros would not be so big without some sort of chemical process to break down those bonds and loosen the curl.
so this add on you tube shows not only Oil sheen / afro sheen but also a blow out.

Prince had far too much style to follow the masses, thats why he never got a curl, Prince went to the coiffure after the afro, then the punk cut, the medusa type ringlets thing and the short hair Parade look and then semi stages of longish straight hair until 91. By then the Jheri curl had well and truly gone out of fashion, except to members of Full Force.
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time
I always thought that it was a curl because it looked drippy like one at times. However, it could have very well been a relaxer that was rodded with small rods. Relaxers are different from Perms (although people use the term interchangably). Who's to really say. In any event, I thought it looked nice on him for the time that he wore it.
U don't happen to be "Steve Reel?" Are U? If so....Keep up the "Celtic Knights!"

Click the commercial that I posted. It's for the Afro-Sheen Blow Out Kit.
Nevermind, you did see it.

You know I always thought Prince had a Jheri curl during the 1999/Purple Rain days but after seeing the responses, I see I was wrong. You learn something new everyday!
