Because Jackass the music is not tailor-made for the radio. Nothing that P has recorded over the last four CDs was in sync with radio play list.
Especially RnB radio but I forgot you are an orger so you probably do not know shit about RnB music or what is popular with RnB audiences but it does not stop you from running off at the mouth about a topic you are clueless about. In addition, since P is not signed to a major label none of this music will get radio airplay so how could he be trying to fit in with the radio. Now stop being a dickhead and go get a fucking clue.
I believe songs like Chocolate Box and Laydown are Prince's attempt at sounding contemporary. Whether this material actually does fit in with the utter shit you hear on most R&B music channels is irrelevant, Prince's intentions are still the same.
Understand, jackass?
No moron those songs do not fit contemporary RnB radio formats at all. Only a complete idiot would think this way but you keep on making an ass of yourself. If you can read I and many others have stated many times that it appears that P could give a fuck less about radio or the traditional music industry.
If he cared he would be on a major label, he would fill up an entire CD with a bunch of cameos with dumb ass rappers and fill the whole CD with autotune. Because all of those actions would get him on the radio today dumbass.
Your whole beef is the traditional RnB/Funk sound of the 20TEN well you and all the RnB haters can go jump in a fucking lake. I think he just wanted to make some grooves and all of this deep discussion about it is a bunch of bullshit. |

Major label? 3121 was on Universal. Autotune? Yeah, he's used that on two out of the last four of his releases. Rap cameos? Chocolate Box.
Care to make a prat of yourself anymore???

I don't have beef with anything. I was never criticising his music. I really enjoyed most of 20Ten and have stated so on numerous different threads.
Your responses strike me as a little unbalanced. Do you have any anger management classes nearby?
You've obviously jumped the gun, completely missed the entire point of my original post and made a right royal tit of yourself. [Edited 7/12/10 10:08am] |

Last time I checked Prince is a Pop Artist. He`s been a Pop Artist since For You. Regardless of charts he makes music b/c its his passion. How can an artist not be influenced by what`s around him... art is a reflection/expression of what we see/hear or are influenced by. He may care about charts & he may not... it seems to me that fans are more concerned about his chart placemnt than he is. I`m sure he wouldn`t mind being @ the top of the charts, what artist wants to be @ the bottom? Bottom line is the dude is getting paid & it seems like that is his primary concern for the time being & if he does well on the charts so be it & if not he`s go the cash to make up for it. |

Exactly.
But once again - we don't know what those intentions are. |

Well said.
Many Prince fans seem to think that Prince's default setting is the artistry and rebellion of Dirty Mind.
However, I think that the pop/rock/funk/r&b smorgasbord of his second album is much more his musical home base/default setting.
I've said it before, Prince always has had one foot in the avant purple/edge and one foot in the pop world in terms of sound and style. "New Power slide...." |

Prince insists that he doesn't care about the charts, and I would be inclined to believe him if he was still making albums like The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone, Xpectation etc.
But you can't tell me he wrote songs like Chocolate Box or Laydown for the artistic merit. This is the sound of a man who wants to sound contemporary, who wants to fit in with the current musical climate. The same man who wrote Rave, a tailor-made "I'll-deliver-the-goods-you-give-me-a-hit" album.
But with Rave, at least he tried to see it through. He performed on every TV show going, did magazine interviews, promoted the hell out of it in a desperate attempt to get TGRES on the radios and on MTV. Over ten years later, his music is still gunning for commercial relevance (I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen his recent output be compared to the Black Eyes Peas) and yet he just gives his albums away for free.
Am I the only one who thinks that this doesn't seem to make any sense??
Prince is a popstar. That's all nothing else. He is no great musician in terms of his musical intellect. He can memorize parts on his instrument and then tease and mezmorize us with it on stage. He has an extremely limited vocabulary on guitar and he doesn't really OWN his instrument like you might hear from some jazz players. This is real talk. I'm not trying to hate when I say it, I'm just trying to be real, but there is nothing musically advanced or next level about The Rainbow Children, or Xpectation or any of that stuff. Prince HAS to write for the pop world because he can'compete in any other realm.
U, my friend, couldn't be any farther from the Truth. Any musician without an ego issue that's worked with Prince would beg 2 differ. He's a monster on drums, guitar, keys and bass. "He's a musician's musician..." |

Please don't steer this discussion into Prince's instrumental abilities. There are other threads for that. |

I don't believe a lot of the quotes from Prince's former band members are as truthful as they could be. A lot of these people need a positive relationship with Prince for one reason or another and I believe they often times exaggerate the positive when discussing their working relationships with him publicly. It's no sin to be bad as hell as a funk player, but incapable in an style that requires a deeper understanding. Prince fans generally think the guy can do anything, but any dispassionate look at his output would reveal that is not the case. |

"completely missed the entire point of my original post and made a right royal tit of yourself."
Your post has no fucking point.
"Major label? 3121 was on Universal. Autotune? Yeah, he's used that on two out of the last four of his releases. Rap cameos? Chocolate Box."
Is he on a major label at this time? Do you hear autotune on 20ten? Are there any rap cameos on 20TEN. You started a post discussing why does Prince write commercial music that will get on the charts when he claims not to care about the charts when 20ten is not all that commercial.
Are you trying to discuss this cd or past cds?
Your post makes no fucking sense and instead of claiming I need anger managment why don't you take a class on how to think before you write something.

Yes even the people that have beefs with him are singing his praises as a musician because they feel forced to do so. Get off the drugs. |

You're right, I can't. But I can't tell you he didn't either. Unless we hear it from Prince himself, we don't know his reasons and intentions. We can only speculate - but why should we, really?
I don't see how speculation would enhance our perception of the music.
Let me quote myself from another thread:
Unless we know otherwise, we must always assume that every artist creates what he wants to create, and that every work of art is supposed to be exactly the way it is.
Never a truer statement said.
What we dont want to accept is 90% of his released albums contained filler and pop drivel, even the classics. "Delerious" was a classic and a fave of mine but listen to it, tell me that song wasnt a naked attempt at a pop hit. |

Double :-0
:-0 :-0
Prince may or may not be the end-all when it comes to musicians, but anyone that can come up with 1,000 different melodies and instrument all of them knows his way around a fretboard and keyboard. |

The only thing I can tell you is this:
I don't know whether "Delirious" was a naked attempt at a pop hit - or an attempt to get laid, or an attempt to save the world, or an attempt to spread the word of Satan, or whatever...
I simply don't know what the intentions were.
I could speculate - but why?
Would it change the way I listen to the music? |

While the album was free with the purchase of a newspaper/magazine, you realize Prince still got paid by the newspapers/magazines.
I like to think that Prince is still trying to push himself musically, just as he was when he was first starting out.
My opinion, which is based on the very little I know of his actual motives, is that Prince truly doesn't seem concerned about the charts. I don't think he ever has.
I think he likes to test himself musically and try on styles and sounds like he tries on high-heeled boots.
And it is my opinion that while commercial success doesn't seem to his goal, he does want to make sure that he is paid for the work he put into making the music.
