Forever In My Life(S.O.T.T Concert Movie) Appreciation Thread

i was sweatin' last night from jammin' to it..and i'm doin' it now.WHEW!

prince took it to CHUUUCH on this one! (not church as in crystal cathedral/oru/live from studio b).not that kind..i mean CHUUUUUCH!(as in Bobby Hurd/Jackson Southernaires/Mahalia Jackson/Andrae Crouch....with a side of Johnnie Taylor for the blues)

as far as the whole movie goes, "i got star star star star star on it" worship

another version that gets honorable mention as well:

the infamous '88 aftershow version.oh yes...Bonnie KILLED IT on there too! nod clapping

so.who's with me? cool

I am not a big fan of the movie but I like the tour. The concert was poorly lipsynced and wish they would have truely performed live for the movie.

Yeah, I guess we all ere with you here... Forever In My Life / It is fantastic, woot!

the whole SOTT movie is like that, one big funk feast..... worship

a shame though the hits Girls & Boys, Kiss, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, 1999 etc. didn't made the movie/ were edited out when it was re-shot at Paisley Park,

Prince's Set
Sign O' The Times
Play In The Sunshine
Little Red Corvette
Housequake
Girls And Boys
Slow Love
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Hot Thing
Now's The Time
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Let's Go Crazy
When Doves Cry
Purple Rain
1999
Forever In My Life
It
Kiss
The Cross
It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

but again that would have been a whole different movie then..

After his screams, it looks like he has a small coughing fit. Is this part really lipsynched and the cough just acting? I always thought this was one of the "real" performances, but maybe I'm wrong.

I completely agree. Forever In My Life is an incredible high-point from the already stellar Sign O The Times film.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The film is stellar, but it is such a pity that it is not a genuine "live" performance.

If the film shot on tour in Europe was useable, the film might have been damn near the ultimate concert movie.

If I understand correctly, it was actually a kind of reversed lip-synching. Prince did sing live, but his vocals had to be re-recorded, since there was some problem with the sound quality of the live recording. This wasn't planned.

I think you don't even have to be a singer to understand that trying to sing to a picture of your lips moving is much harder than the opposite, "normal" way of lip-synching.

It's a shame, because I also think "Forever In My Life" is a great performance - but it's also one of the numbers where the overdubbing is most obvious.

No, sorry, I wasn't entirely correct.

Just checked with Per Nilsen's book, and it seems that parts were (due to lack of separation between the tracks) in fact re-recorded to match the concert footage - which is very hard to do. But then it turned out that the quality of the original footage wasn't good either, so the whole show had to be filmed again as well, now lip-synched to a mix of original live tracks and new overdubs.

Is that right?

Sometimes the moving picture can be out of synch with the audio. The concert was indeed live.

Anyway, LOVE that performance, I loved how he incorporated "It" in it too, it definitely brought that gospel feel. nod

His ass looks so big and round for such a small frame in that performance. Indeed, it looks almost thong-thong-thong-thong-thong big and round...and the tassles from his pants add a gay-cowboy village people vibe to it.

I like that performance.

That's more or less correct. Nothing worked out with the audio from the European shows, so Prince and crew re-recorded band takes of the songs at Paisley Park and Sunset Sound. The decision to perform and shoot all of the stage footage at Paisley Park (except for the U Got The Look part which was previously shot for the promo video) instead of using existing concert footage is still not entirely explained. Everything on the SOTT film was lip-synced from those studio re-recordings.

If I remmeber correctly, the long distance shots are from the real concert (eg. the opening as Prince screams "Uptown!" is real, also parts of "I Could Never..."). It was the close ups that didnt work.

As for "Forver In My Life", I still remember reading the Rolling Stone review of the film and the critic praised the film, only complaining about "Forever In My Life" and "Beautiful Night" going on far too long. I was 13 and remember saying "Are you kidding? That's the best part!"

The audio is GREAT. The performace is GREAT. The editing is GREAT. But together....

this is the worst part of matching the strumming of his mimed performance to the audio in the whole movie. There are moments when it's like the hong kong movie version of guitar playing.

I always thought he was trying to outdo the Talking Heads in the great concert film "Stop Making Sense" with that part of the SOTT concert.

i haven't seen any other sott tour videos and haven't really listened that closely or attentively

to any of the boots from that tour either.

but i'm guessing that the whole last bit with prince screaming was just a one off. at least, from

the look on Dr Fink's face, it seems like he totally surprises the band too.

i love that moment, the build up of it all, until he drops the mic. and then there's Dr Fink right

there with his tambourine, looking like he's just seen prince walk across water.

bow

one of my favorit prince performance moments ever. truly spectacular and magical. oh, and

let's not forget the magnificent Boni Boyer!!!!

I'm always really impressed by how the live concert sound was used and then a new picture was recorded... especially the bit where he trips over the microphone stand at the end of Forever smile
