Fun little opener, he's much more in sync with his 80s sound on this album than on MPLSsound IMO.

Definately.

I can see it sitting quite comfortably on Graffiti Bridge.

Nothing like the production on 'Graffiti Bridge.' 'Compassion' would stick out like a sore thumb.

The entire album has superior production and melodies that 'Graffiti Bridge' (perhaps bar 'The Question of U', 'Joy in Repetition').

This doesn't resemble 1990's Prince. The entire sound and style recalls '82-'83.

Do your research kid, Can't Stop This Feeling I Got was written in 1982.

does anyone know the lyrics to our new national anthem?

this is all i've got. a few lines are incredibly hard to make out:

compassion

As zero point approaches and the fields around you drop

thoughts become reality and it feels like time has stopped

when all that's on the radio is electromagnetic pop

[steady your teeth are gnashin']

compassion

get it on

compassion

right on

when love for the greater number freezes over and cools

everyone around you acts like a bloody fool

no sanctity to the left of you no righteousness to the right

the only thing that's left in fashion

compassion

get it on

compassion

whatever skin you're in, we all need to be friends

all happy again, it's so much better than nothing

everybody can win, with a little faith in man

beginning of an end and start up a brand new something

when ego, fear and judgement become the rule of law

watch the polar ice caps heat up, melt down and thaw

when the greedy one forgets that he's the reason for it all

[the only goal/gold that's [..] in passion]

compassion

get it on

compassion

right on

when [….....] no love can be found

nature will rise against nature and get down

whatever skin you're in, we all need to be friends

all happy again, it's so much better than nothing

everybody can win, with a little faith in man

beginning of an end and start up a brand new something

if you got compassion

let's get back in fashion

the new international anthem

whatever skin you're in, we all need to be friends

all happy again, it's so much better than nothing

everybody can win, with a little faith in man

beginning of an end and start up a brand new something

(repeat)

this look great smile Thanks

my native language is not english, but I've been trying to type this lyrics down all night.

what I hear is:

[the only goal/gold that's [..] in passion]

the only goal that's so much passion.

and

when [….....] no love can be found

when highter seeded knowledge, no love can be found.

Its an okay song, kind of uplifting, "your teeth are gnashing" is the best lyric so far on this album. There may be others...still listening.

Yes. But you are clearly referencing the 1990 version that appears on 'Graffiti' Bridge', thus your explicit reference to that album.

The 82 version is a completely different production and sound. As is 'Tick, Tick Bang' also written in the same era, but released and re-produced on 'Graffiti Bridge.'

'Graffiti Bridge' does not have these songs with the early eighties production. Thus 'Compassion' would still sound utterly out of place.

Your point is moot, kid.

people who say Prince's lyrics r crap need to lookk at the lyric, "steady your teeth are gnashin'."

Prince is still very creative with the english language, even throwing in a couple of foreign languages.

This is a VERY creative, with a hint of charicature, way to say U're frustrated

and this isn't an isolated incident. they're all over the album.

You're talking just about production. The two songs are 20 years apart, so of course one is going to sound drastically dated compared to the other. That doesn't mean the song itself would sound out-of-place on Graffiti Bridge. If it were written 20 years ago and given the same production values Prince used back then, I could very much imagine it sitting comfortably on the Graffiti Bridge.

For the record, I'm not the only person in this thread to have compared Compassion to ICSTFIG.

I think Laydown should have opened the album and this closed it in place of Everybody Loves Me, which should have a b side.

I really like it when Prince does this type of song, and it does have an early 1980's feel which is great.

nod Good point, it would've been a better sequencing. "Compassion" sounds more like a closer than an opener while "Laydown" seems to be an opener... strange sequencing this album is. Maybe that's another reason I trashed "Laydown" initially and hyped this one up lol

Bursting with all the intensity of his classic funkabilly songs (Jack U Off comes to mind) Prince hits hard with this opener. He infects your body and has you toe tapping in no time. With trademark sounds and arrangements of Controversy / 1999 era if this is indicative of how the rest of the album will flow then we are in for a good ride.

At first listen it has an uplifting feel to it and will undoubtedly be a grower for me.

Hmmm, I think that's the problem for me - it doesn't hit hard at all. It sounds promising as it starts, and is a good song in theory, but it never really takes off... in fact, I don't think the album even takes of until half way through the second track...

Compash? Silly.

Decent song. I like the chorus, how it makes you feel all hippy like. Blunt funk. Starts out cheesy, but it is good.

No, he's not saying that at all... lol

The transition from the verse to the chorus annoys the heck out of me in this song... feels so abrupt and awkward...

I really like this song a lot. I love the synths and the urgency in this track. I will say that I think this song should not have been the opener but I don't think Laydown should have opened it either because that song, while hot on its own, I think Prince did the right thing by putting it where he did. I think Beginning Endlessly should have started the CD THEN Compassion. For some reason, I've been starting the CD with BE and then later on, I play Compassion. Still a hot track.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
