its not really about sharing or taking its about valuing and respecting musicians and the internet has done the opposite .. turning itself into what is essentially a giant walmart that extinguishes any hope of survival for the mom and pop stores and lesser financially promoted music.

the problem is so heavy that even the bands that were once able to sell records CANT. who cares they already made their millions but the fact is they are being extinguished to make room for coorporate music aka advertising for product.

i am totally with prince on this one and the fact that time and time again he finds a way to make what he needs without bowing to I tunes or warner bros or whomever is 100% inspiring .. furthermore he is giving back to a publication that he feels good about and in turn they are likely giving him the same amount of money he would have made elsewhere if not more ..

plus its a great album .. internet has been corrupted just like tv and radio .. prince is going back to word of mouth and its the only way to keep it real

i agree the internet had been corrupted. corrupted by MONEY.

people made a living just fine before the net came along, or at least no more or no less difficult than they can today.

Prince is right to say that the net is over in terms of making money from it.

it wasnt originally intended for that purpose anyway, but the money-grabbers have raped it for long enough.

i'm glad to see them go, and i'm glad Prince has finally realised that the internet is no place for him.

I just posted this on another thread but felt it fits better here.

I think most fail to understand the significance of what he has done, its both quite obvious and at the same time genius. I think Prince has found the magic formula for music in the internet age and people are incredibly foolish to dismiss it,....which I myself initially did.

Think about this, but substitute the newspaper for any other vehicle as the method of distribution.

1. The artist creates his work and is offered for sale to a second party as promotional material only.

2. The second party can use the work for the promotion of their product, site, whatever, limited only by your imagination. Newspaper promotion in this instance, but does not own the artwork outright , is just given limited permission as promotional material.

3. THIS IS THE CRUTIAL PART- The artist must be paid in advance! Otherwise it will be all over the internet in seconds and all chances of financial gain quickly disappear. As we saw here last week, just about everybody and their mother had listened to the new Prince release TWO DAYS BEFORE ITS ACTUAL RELEASE.

Now when i hear Prince talk about an Itunes advance, it makes total sense. I now believe It would be insane not to demand it. The internet as the sole distribution format without a second party or a the sole product not intended as a promotional device for a concert series etc is completely dead as a viable music distribution format for monetary gain.

I mock my man Prince on many occasion, but he is right on the money on this matter and only a matter of minutes before it finally dawns on people.

Now if he really wanted to make money on the internet, it has to be non-downloadable products and he is sitting on a mostly untapped and unlimited source of income in with his name brand in the classic form of music memorabilia, from limited edition everything to t-shirts, cups, posters etc. etc. I believe its time for Prince to join the Beatles and most rock icons that make substantial amout of money on that.
