I think this whole internet is dead thing is meant it is dead for him. But, I would also think that statement was to support the newspapers and magazines that will carry his CD. It's good business politics to reinforce your partnership, while making a statement that creates a buzz. Like it or not it's creating a lot of attention around Prince's new CD. Not as much buzz as WB distributing his 20Ten CD in the USA. That will create a lot of attention-if indeed it does happen.

Let's take this in the other direction for a minute.

We know that Prince is very intelligent and very well versed on World Matters.

Perhaps he feels the Internet is dead based on the current administrations efforts for Internet Regulation.

http://blog.survivalstation.org/citizen-uprising-over-internet-regulation-51978.html

This is also a guy who said:

I've gotta go home y'all...
I've gotta go back to America
I've gotta go get ready for the bomb
Osama Bin Laden getting ready to bomb
America... you better watch out... 2001

And Lo And Behold..........

falloff falloff falloff falloff falloff falloff falloff

Educate yourself. Prince isn't some clairvoyant predicting world events. Try this on for size:

Anyone who watched the news, knew these things about bin Laden:

December 1992 - bombing of Gold Mihor Hotel in Aden Yemen. 2 people dead

1990's - financially aided and assisted jihadis in Algeria, Afghanistan, and Egypt; he urged war instead of peace, and the war killed almost 200,000 Algerians (this incident put him on the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted)

1993 - Orchestrated and financially aided attacks the WTC

November 1997 - Funded the Luxor Massacre, 62 people dead.

1997 - Attack on city of Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan; killed 6,000 people

1998 - declared war on North Americans and allies. He told journalists that Americans were "very easy targets", and that "you will see the results of this in a very short time".

August 7, 1998 - orchestrated the bombing of the embassies in Africa, namely in the cities of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya

October 2000 - orchestrated the attack on the USS Cole in October 2000

Osama's name was in the news for years, well before September 11, 2001.

Also, while we're keeping it real, the "2001" part was because Prince was calling out a cue to the band to play "Also Sprach Zarathrustra" by Richard Strauss, which was used as the main theme to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was NOT Prince saying Osama was going to bomb in 2001.

He also said, "Ya'll ready? 2001 is here HOLLAND" as the band played the Strauss song. The "Osama bin laden gettin' ready to bomb" is repeated over and over before that. He then says "America, ya better watch out." Then called the cue to play "Also Sprach Zarathrustra" again. Considering the date of this recording, Prince is most likely referencing the above-mentioned Embassy bombings which happened days, or even just a week or two, before the show in question (although I'm unclear on the date of the Holland recording).

For the record, also, the "Also Sprach Zarathrustra" was played a lot on that tour, and his calling out "2001" was the cue for that, the same way he'd call out "SQUIRRELMEAT", or "LEAD LINE" or "CONFUSION" or "HIT ME IN THE BACK". He did not chant "Osama bin Laden, gettin' ready to bomb" all the time, or nearly at all, except the incident in question. bin Laden told REPORTERS that stuff was going to start happening, which means it was IN THE MEDIA. Prince watches the news like anyone. He was referencing a news story, not seeing the future.

The 9/11 attacks were originally planned as far back as January 3, 2000 as a "happening" date which, at that time, included attacks in Jordan, Mount Nebo (on tourists), a site at the Jordan River, sinking of the USS The Sullivans in Yemen, as well as a target on US soil. The whole thing was foiled.

Don't make it into something it's not because it's not that brilliant.

It's just "purple nike heaven's gate" fodder to make the conversation interesting.

Back in the real world I think he basically has a "sour grapes" mindset about itunes and the like because he feels like as the quote goes: "I make music. They sell it." about record companies.

He wants to use the old record company blueprint of receiving an advance for each record. These days the advance isn't recoupable so Prince is taking the money and running.

Then he can put out CD's of HIGHLY VARIABLE quality and not worry about doing the legwork of promoting it.

This is my opinion just like your commentary is your opinion.

It's not "opinion" when you're speaking for "everyone", or even "people on this site", most of which you probably don't know well enough to speak for.

You think folks here hate SOTT? lol WTF forum you reading?

You said, "People on this site don't like Purple Rain or SOTT", which is false. The sentiment of SOTT is always love-driven.

Then you said, "... damn near everyone is in agreement are his two best albums."

So which is it? Who is "everyone"? "Everyone" here? Or has someone taken the time to survey the free world in order to gather these incredibly out-of-balance statistics?

Let's forget about 1999, Controversy, Dirty Mind, The Gold Experience, Exodus, Lovesexy, Batman, Parade, prince, and Around The World In A Day - all of which folks have listed as one of their top favorites, well above Purple Rain. Yeah, let's just stick with the PR and SOTT. That's safe. rolleyes

It's still opinion.

I guess everything that you say is supposed to be scientific or quantifiable?

There have been threads on people not liking the above mentioned albums as well however everyone (meaning orgers, music critics, and the man on the street) can agree that those were his best two albums.

Now I respect you and your posts but your posts and opinions are not the end all be all of everything Prince just as mine are.

If there is a problem PM me and we will discuss.

falloff I was going to suggest a little known research tool LIBRARY.

P.S. I don't have to "come to Prince's defense" I have my own opinions, thank you. smile

Then, I'm afraid your suggestion would be piss poor. Great suggestion for 1910, not so great for 2010 - particularly in smaller cities when doing research on more esoteric or obscure subjects.

There is not a physical library anywhere that contains the amount of data available on the 'net, nor one that has that same amount of up to date data as available on the 'net. So, if you like living in the past...

Libraries, which hire intelligent, knowledgeable (currently unemployed) people who are trained in helping you find whatever research tools you need, are an excellent tool. (Whether they have computers or not is irrelevant.)

Actually, it's not irrelevant at all. These people can only direct you to the limited physical data they have available in a single location. Beyond that, either they or you must use the internet. lol

...and now, thanks to Google Books, I'll be able to read old volumes that may NEVER again be available within the physical library system because they are too old and too rare to make physical copies publicly available for everyone. Never mind the local library, rare volumes in libraries across the world will be opened up to everyone via digital resources online. People will have access to books that have been essentially lost or forgotten through time. Obscure, limited circulation publications will suddenly be only 10 seconds away.

(Not to mention that Librarie are a source of employment for people--you remember what people are, don't you?) They pay taxes, give you advise, stroke you when you're feeling down, yell at you when you need it.....human interaction. Some people have even met their spouses in Libraries -- but I digress. lol

You know, I'll bet more people have met their spouses over the 'net since its introduction than they have in a library. ...and since you bring up human interaction, there are whole communities unto themselves on the 'net where people interested in a particular topic, or who have experience with a specific issue can be found. The library can't replace that.

If I'm working on my car, trying to isolate a specific problem, I can hop on the 'net, look up error codes, see photos of what the part looks like, check for the best prices on said part. I can then find out what stores have the part available locally both new and in a single search that covers all auto salvage yards in my area in 30 seconds (less time than it takes to even call and talk to a live person at a single location). I can view howto videos that show me exactly how to replace the defective part, exchange info with other actual people who have replaced the part and any "gotchas" they might have experienced in doing so.

If I'm trying to replace a door lockset in my 120 year old Eastlake house with something historically accurate... I can wait 20 years for an example to show up at the local demolition yard and pay 5 times too much for it - or I can hop onto ebay or Craigslist, find the part and have a repair completed inside of a week, saving a bundle in the process.

If I have some esoteric interest in Irish neolithic burial tombs, what is the local library going to have for me? Maybe an outdated book or two from 1972 with skimpy B&W pictures. Maybe one of the employees can order in another book or two that takes 3 weeks to get here.... or I can go online, see photos in hi-res, can visit the blogs of noted archeologists as they excavate around a dolmen in real time, and talk to other people in Ireland who have actually visited the site and can share their own data.

If I'm researching my family tree, I can find distance relatives that I never even knew existed, who've already done the work, etc...

..and those are examples of things I've done just in a single day recently that would have taken an insane amount of money or man hours to do prior to using the internet.

Only thing, the Library requires is that we get off of our fat arses, go there and actually perform research! Good Night.

Hey, if that's the kind of motivation you need and the only exercise you ever get, then more power to you. However, I'd suggest a little known tool we currently have access to called a MOBILE DEVICE. They come in the form of notebooks, netbooks, cell phones, PDA's, etc...

I can get up off my not-so-fat ass and go enjoy a nice day at the park while I do my research. I can take a walk through the woods and use an iPad with a 'net connection to identify plant and wildlife. Can you do this with your library? Are you going to drag the library staff and all the bookshelves behind you with a crane as you walk through the woods? lol

..and this post is a bit rambling but it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of what is possible, nor does it even delve into other areas where the 'net is useful such as business, or general communication (such as video conferencing with friends and family who are half way around the world).

Cool. Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that the art world operated like that.

The example you are using is more like a piece being commissioned (something similiar to the record company model), where money is needed to actually complete the work or where the interest is very high (like you stated). The difference is Prince has already completed the work and isn't on a record label.

The Tom Cruise example should not be compared to the music industry. Tom Cruise (or any other actor) is contracted to perform in someone else's art. Although actors are artists in a sense, they can only add to what has already been established. They are "work for hire", and the money behind the project takes a chance everytime they pay someone upfront. But they are fine with that because they have the money to play with.

Prince wants to be paid upfront for his own art, art that hasn't been commissioned by anyone but himself. He is trying to use the old "advance" model while working with businesses that aren't record companies and don't want to take the risk. What he forgets is that advances from record companies were designed to be a loan to the artist so that they could live "comfortably" during the (used to be) long recording and marketing process. But since he is using his own money to finance his art advances are not only unnecessary but absolutely ridiculous. iTunes has no long term investment in Prince or any other artist so why would they give him an advance? The only reason these newspapers are going along with Prince is because print media is dying and ANY gimmick that can increase circulation is going to be tried. But there will only be so many times this will work before the papers realize that its costing them more than what its worth.

[Edited 7/6/10 8:50am]

Not exactly accurate. Prince takes the art he already created and puts it out there to businesses who wish to license Prince's art for their marketing plans. The situation you explain has Prince telling somebody "gimme 1 million and I'll make an ablum for you." In reality, it's "I have this album. if you like it, gimme 1 million and you can bundle it with your product"

Umm....that's pretty much what I said, not to mention the fact that Prince himself used the word "advance" when talking about iTunes. confused

Prince is being WAY hypocritical here. Artists make music. They don't get paid, by default, for that. It's supposed to be their bread and butter, just like anyone else's job/task/occupation/whatever. No one goes into Walmart for a job and says "I want a year's pay up front, or I'm not doing it." Prince thinks he's at the point where he's PRINCE and people should be grateful to smell his tennis shoes walk into their office, when in fact, he's not bankable. He's not a guaranteed hit, whether in sales or a #1 song. (Yes yes, "charts don't matter", but the fact is Prince has tried again and again to play to the charts since day one, and continues to do so.) While I'm not endorsing the way Soundscan runs things, because we all know its shifty ways, the fact is that Prince knows they aren't friendly to him for whatever reason, and vice versa. So why not get his pay up front, and side-step all that lack of whatever? NO band, present, past, or future, as the clout to say "I want to be paid, in full, up front, or else." NO ONE. Sure, maybe an artist gets an advance to secure and guarantee, and downright motivate, them to finish a project and make it friendly enough for fans and the general public to be attracted to; and even a bonus at the end. But who on earth thinks they can just throw out rules like this and get away with it? Prince does, but look where it's gotten him. He's now pooping on anyone who doesn't play by his rules. I've no doubt Prince knows the business. He's been in it for eons, and has been through a lot with it. He's been near broke a few times, and recovered. Whatever happened to Prince actually working for his paycheck? He tried resting on his laurels, and that didin't work. So why not poo poo the lack of interest, opposed to looking in the mirror and self-critiquing what another common denominator might be in the equation of "being over".

- That's why Prince wants his money up front. So he can run with it when he knows he'll lose interest in his own shit in three months. Case in point: Lotusflow3r. Case in point: Endless orders at 1800NEWFUNK, NPGMC, etc etc etc that were never filled, partially filled. How many people couldn't even get some yahoo in Los Angeles to package up a t-shirt and send it off in 2009? How hard is it to create a database, or even a damn spread sheet in fucking Excel, to keep track of people????? Sure it's task heavy, but that's part of running a business. Nothing is THAT simple. Prince has ADHD when it comes to everyone's business, but seems to be quite keen when it comes to his own.

Does it dawn on no one when Prince told Tavis Smiley, regarding the Target distribution of Lotusflow3r, "I'm taken care of, and Bria is taken care of", and after that, we saw practically NOTHING of him. Three nights on Leno, and one again for a farewell (not even a Lotus song there). That was March. Add a couple of appearances on either Ellen or whatever. Didnt' see him again until the end of the year, not in a big way, not on TV, not in interviews, not a video NOTHING. Out of 365 days in a year, how many did Prince really appear and work toward selling Lotusflow3r? The ill-proportion is embarrassing, at best. Prince took the money, delivered a 1/4-assed project (it wasn't even half-assed), then skipped off with his girl friend of the now. No more candy for us - indeed.

- Prince won't give his song to iTunes? Bullshit. Not only is his WB stuff on there, which he may or may not have a say-so in, but so it his independent releases like Planet Earth, "S.S.T.", "F.U.N.K.", "Te Amo Corazon", "Fury", "Dance 4 Me (remix)", "Black Sweat/Beautiful Loved & Blessed", as well as WB compilations he DID have a say so in like Very Best Of, and Ultimate, and even The Hits/The B-Sides.

- The internet isn't over. No one trusts him anymore, and he fucking knows it. Maybe Prince has finally gotten the message from his hoards that they won't just accept his half-assed attempts at stuff because, well "that's just Prince - he's a genius". REALLY? At what? Playing music? Totally. Selling it? Eh, 50/50. Promoting his work? 40/60. Being a man of his word? Zero.

- He used to be all about "all these computers and digital gadgets" back when the internet was new, and TheDawn.com was around, or L40A. He allegedly "loved the interaction with the fans", until the fans had a voice of their own and wasn't walking in a purple haze when entering their credit card number. He realized his minions weren't willing to be part of the clone wars. All those numbers aren't so bad in a computer when it's printing out his royalty check, now is it?

No Prince, the internet isn't over. It's just over for you.

Just put your CDs in stores, get your lump sum up front, we'll buy it, and you can run off to Paris for another summer, and play in the sunshine. We'll be here listening to Lovesexy or Dirty Mind, remembering when it was still more cool to be a fan. Oh, we're still fans. We still love you. It's your shadiness that we're having issues with. All in love.

I-tunes or not if I can not buy it in a shop or get in in some US publication, I will have to get it someplace. As that someplace is not likely to pay Prince anything I have to assume that as he refuses to use a service such as I-tunes (given prince's habit of generalizing I will assume that he also means no Amazon or any other on line music vendor either) that would pay him and that he is giving it away for 'free' in other publications that he really means what he said 15ish years ago that music should be FREE. And I will honour *Note fancy British spelling* his wishes and obtain it with out offering monetary consideration.

More Purple hype here too... http://music-mix.ew.com/2...rnet-over/

From the article:

You may now take a brief break to clear your brain of all those pesky numbers and consider the following paradox: If the Internet is completely over, how are you reading this post? I think Prince just blew my mind.

Meanwhile, by saying the Internet is dead, Prince has gotten every music website on the planet to write about his new album. Clever.

Indeed. Mission accomplished. Prince ain't slick, LOL.

Target couldn't make their money back with a couple of commercials and tv appearances and NO radio play. No videos. Nothing to push the album. I doubt that Target was even a sponsor of the tour. At least they would have gotten a nice PR or marketing by sponsoring the tour.

I look at it like this, if Prince wants a "advance", he has to commit to a label that will get him on the radio, push his albums, make videos. Target can't do it. It has to be a multi-album deal so that they can re-coup and make some bank.

I am thinking he wants the lions share and believes his name alone makes it a good deal for a label. It brings x number of die hards, to get alot more, you have to reach more than just your die hards, via radio airplay. And he has to deliver some great music. He needs to rebuild his image, you can't just do that without some help.

He does well for himself, but if he wants to really be popular and everyone to enjoy his music, he needs help. Itunes wouldn't make much if he delivered them an album. Right now, being a Prince fan is like being part of a small underground, that's not mainstream and becoming less and less rememberable.

I think he's trying some things and having some success, but I don't think it's the success level he's looking for. It's financially successful and somewhat of a critical success, but not a mainstream success. Everything ends up being marked way down ($4.99 for his picturebook with live CD?, Lotus flower discounted at Target, go find Emancipation etc.)

He must listen to the radio and wonder why he's shut out. I don't think his music of late would make much of an impact right now - no bona fide hits have been produced. He has to step up his game. Let's Go Crazy, you didn't want that song out of your head. Nothing lately measures up. Do I still believe he has it in him, yes, I think he just needs to find that drive again. Just the way I see it at the moment.

But hey, who knows what really motivates him? What does he really want? Maybe he doesn't want to be on top. I know this, I could really use some GREAT NEW Prince tunes right about now. Not just good and interesting Prince tunes.

And remember the two videos were limited to his website for a while, or one or two other places. NO ONE COULD FIND THEM. He's STUPID when it comes to shit like that, taking his videos off YouTube or whatever. He NEEDS all the free promotion he can get. His name alone won't sell any records - not like they used to. 16 months later, and Lotus still ain't even Gold status. Imagine if he did more than kiss Jay Leno's ass for three nights. Imagine if he just made the round of TV shows, ALL of them. Imagine if he put the videos out for folks to see, and marketed stuff like "Crimson and Clover" to rock stations and even oldies stations. Imagine if he marketed "Box of Chocolates" or whatever to Urban radio.

Prince forgot how to be willing to do the work, then bitches because nothing gets done. So then what? Demand the money in advance, and shit on every distributor you've had, eventually going back to the plantation you were so hot to get away from not even two decades ago.

Lotus is $4.99 in stores, and has been since February or so. (I took a picture of the 4.99 tag and posted it on Flickr February 1 of this year.) There are gobs of them here in every Target I venture into. They can't give it away. I don't know what Prince is telling these people who do one-off deals with him, but they're sure eating it up.

As intelligent as Prince is, I was stunned when I read this quote. He really missed the mark...

He's either WAY ahead of all of us, or completely out of touch

The man might just know something we all don't

Not that I'm taking his side (the internet IS the future, being one of the most powerful tools out there) but I believe if Prince was less money hungry/possessive; he would have a different outlook. Infact he would be embracing the net had it be benefiting to his royal standards.

"Not to sound cosmic, but I've made plans for the next 3,000 years," he says. "Before, it was only three days at a time."

Not to play semantics, but this IS the future. We are in the middle of it.

The internet has been in a big public way since the mid-late 90's, right? Roughly 15 years, let's say. We ARE in the future. Cam streaming, music selling, the whole blogasphere, fan forums (!), downloading TV shows and movies, news outlets, interactions, etc etc - the list of things accomplished in the past 15 years is amazing.

The internet isn't to come, it's HERE. This is the space age, the technology age, the lightning age. We are it.

When it comes to having his cocky finger on the pulse of something new and exciting, Prince is over, not the internet.
