Prince CANNOT write ANYTHING new worth listening to more than once.

Recent examples:

"Cause and Effect"

"Purple and Gold" (shudder) - maybe the worst song ever recorded BY ANYONE

"Hot Summer"

He ruined "In A Large Room With No Light"

Be honest, there's no way you would like these three songs if they were recorded by anyone else. THEY SUCK. Period.

By the way..... "Planet Earth" and "MPLSound" are shit. I bought them, but I should have known better.

He's all about quantity over quality. He just doesn't have it anymore as far as new music goes.

Same here.

I agree with everything but In A Large Room & Planet Earth, i like the new version of Large Room. My only criticism is that he should have kept the last verse in, yes with the CUSS WORDS Prince. Ooooh, lets not offend the children now. MPLSound is VERY hit and miss, over all a meh album

lol I JUST saw a headline on Fark.com that linked to this interesting article about how we're becoming acclimated to overreacting about everything:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2010-06-29-cultureofoverreacting29_CV_N.htm

"An overreaction is about emotions that are bigger than the immediate situation calls for," she says. "You may be releasing a lot of frustration, but your response is far greater than what is justified."

Siegel says overreactions are unprocessed thoughts fueled by the past — and that most people who overreact will hear about it.

"They get feedback that lets them know either their perceptions were one-sided or it leads to consequences that lead to regrets," she says. "People will say 'You're way over the top,' or afterward you may feel guilty or remorseful you unloaded something on someone that didn't really belong to them."

an album of songs in the style of Purple and Gold would be more interesting than an album of songs like Hot Summer and Cause & Effect.

Not necessarily better.....

but more interesting.

so there.

Non-Prince fans have told me that Purple & Gold is terrible and that it proves that Prince is not a "genius". I disagree in the sense that it confirms Prince's genius in that he can write a traditional fight song. I personally do not care for it and couldn't get through it even one time, but I do think it shows his range of abilities.

In general I do feel that Prince is pursuing quantity over quality, but that's just where he's at right now I guess. If you compare songwriting to other things such as the stock market, starting a business, etc. many people "fail" time and time again until they have "success". It may take dozens of songs to create the "perfect" one or the one that catches on with the public. As fans we get to see his process more than most artists by getting many releases - the good, bad and the ugly.

Reflecting on Prince's musical output I have to say that I have liked many songs from his recent albums, but I feel that the albums lack a cohesiveness (ok, concept) that so many of Prince's albums have. Recent albums seem more like a collection of songs rather than a particular statement.

Subjective outburst! cop

wink

My opinions:

Cause And Effect: below average but it's ok. I have listened to it several times.

Purple And Gold: good song, nothing more, nothing less. Very original sound, that is a plus.

Hot Summer: good song, above average. Has a playful summer feel to it.

In A Large Room With No Lights: below average, but it's ok, and I have listened to it more than once.

And Planet Earth and MPLSound were good albums.

...now run and tell your mama about that wink

That's the first time i've seen a positive comment from ANYONE about Purple & Gold, which is really strange considering it is under suspicion to be possibly the the worst song ever made, by anybody in the history of the entire Universe.

No small feat.

i disagree. for ME, the last proper album was LotusFlower and MPLSound and i had the following on repeat listen for months thereafter:

Here

Dance 4 Me

Old School Company

Dreamer

Colonized Mind

Wall of Berlin

who knows what his plans, intentions were/are for those other songs? (give me a break Purple and Gold was never to be taken seriously anyway) they amount to a couple tracks he sneak peaked to radio, probably just to see how they'd be received. 20Ten is a new album unto itself and i full EXPECT to have a few new tracks on repeat.

In the grand scheme of things I have to agree with this statement.

What I don't understand is that Prince doesn't feel the urge to really overcome this once in a while. Why doesn't he use his strongest material from the vault? Why doesn't he take his time in order to come up with the best he could do? Maybe it's an age thing...and he doesn't want to fight no more! wink

What complete nonsense this is.

IN fact, most Prince recordings WARRANT multiple listenings.

'Lotusflow3r' is a brilliant, timeless, sprawling yet cohesive album, which equals... LONGEVITY.

I don't think its an awful song and I think most of the stuff on the radio now is much worse.
