Like most of his stuff lately, this is fresh from the studio and only about 2-3 songs will be played live because even Prince knows he ain't pullin' shit off anymore.

I still can't believe there isn't even an announcement for a US release date. Either we aren't getting it (is he made at the US?) or we'll have to pay for it (which fans would be fine with) but MONTHS later. Not happy, Prince.

Who's loving the snippets of "Compassion," "Beginning Endlessly," and "Lavaux," from the Mirror website?!
"Compassion" is definitely going for that "Controversy" album sound. I hear slight traces of "Sexuality," "Ronnie Talk 2 Russia," and maybe "Jack U Off," but with a stronger 80s pop kind of melody...i.e. "Cosmic Day."
Featured lyrics:
"The zero point approaches and the fields around u drop. Thoughts become reality and it feels like time has stopped. When all that's on the radio is electromagnetic pop. Fastidio teeth gnash (ha...just writing what it sounds like. anyone have an idea?). Compassion..."
This was Jake's review of "Compassion":
"Same vein as Dance 4 Me, has the same type of keyboard sounds as Hot Summer, the ladies sound good - the "you need compassion, compassion" part of Cause and Effect mirrors the chorus of this song as far as delivery/vocal effects"
Pretty much wrong on all counts. This is nothing like "Dance 4 Me," not the same keys as "Hot Summer," and the chorus isn't "U need compassion," from what I can hear.
"Beginning Endlessly" has a unique sort of tempo and is built on heavy synths and synth-bass. Sounds like it has potential.
Featured lyrics:
"Never mind the bird feed, honey. Just tell me your name. U won't have it long if I get my way in this game. My reputation precedes me. Call it 'claim 2 fame'...."
Jakes review of "Beginning Endlessly":
"Lolita part 2, fat synths, cool dual vocals in each headphone."
His description is maybe slightly less completely wrong here. Both songs are synth-heavy, and both contain lyrics of Prince spitting his game at some girl. Judging from the sample, that's where the comparisons end. I don't hear any "dual vocals in each headphone."
"Lavaux" is my favorite of the snippets. I like the chord progressions and the feel-good kind of vibe. Production-wise, it definitely fits in with "Beginning Endlessly." It's heavy on synths and ultra-tight rhythm guitar. However, the synths sound nothing like "1999," as the German reviewer pointed out. They do sound like "Beginning Endlessly" synths tho. The talk of vineyards and gardens and mountains kind of take me back to Prince's mid-late 80s lyrics.
Featured lyrics:
"Take me 2 the vineyards of Lavaux. I wanna see the mountains...where the gardens grow. Life back home depresses me. Just another form of slavery. The cost of freedom is anything but free. I don't care if they're all covered with snow. I don't care if the road is narrow. If it is...I know (?? Not sure what this part is) It was always meant 2 b. Still in love I must believe, whatever path I choose will lead me home...lead me home. Lavaux. Take me 2 the streets of Portugal..."
Jake's review of "Lavaux":
"Synth sounds just like 1999, lyrics are cheesy and bad, the tempo picks up with some handclaps and finger snaps." Again, the synths do NOT sound like 1999. I don't find the lyrics cheesy, personally, but of course that's subjective. Also, I hear no hand claps and finger snaps in this snippet. If I had to wager, I'd say Jake is full of shit. Sorry.
Judging from the snippets, I feel like the album sounds promising. I'm still wondering if the snippet from the "Fergie" video really is Prince. Judging from the German review, it seems like the only song it could be is "Sticky Like Glue." I guess we'll find out. [Edited 7/6/10 8:21am]

Prince Primes Pirates For Huge Download Fest With 20TenWritten by enigmax on July 06, 2010 Pint-sized popstar Prince will be giving his latest album away for free in a UK newspaper this week. Declaring the Internet “completely over”, iTunes nor any other online store will get access to his music. “Computers and digital gadgets are no good,” he declared in an interview, just as millions of file-sharers line up to use their hopeless number crunchers to suck his latest offering down the pipes. This week will see the release of Prince’s new album. The ten-song offering which kicks off with a track called ‘Compassion’ will not be available in bricks and mortar record stores. In an interview with the UK’s Daily Mirror tabloid – which will be giving the album away for free in a covermount promotion this week – Prince explains why the likes of iTunes and other digital music stores won’t be getting the track either. “The internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it,” he explained. “The internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you,” he added. While the album is also set to be given away with other newspapers, such as Het Nieuwsblad and De Gentenaar in Belgium and Rolling Stone magazine in Germany, contrary to claims by Prince, 20Ten will also be available for free via thousands of Internet outlets. Sometime soon, probably before the planned release date of July 10th, 20Ten will be all over BitTorrent, Gnutella, dozens of one-click hosters, Usenet and file-sharing blogs worldwide and not one of them will have paid Prince the kind of advance he expects but didn’t receive from iTunes and other digital stores. With nowhere else but from a newspaper in limited numbers to get the album, Prince fans will turn to the web in their millions. At this point in the final paragraphs one would normally sum up the news. “Prince is crazy for slamming the Internet and digital devices” or maybe “Prince is a hero for giving his music away” but in this case it’s quite difficult. “I really believe in finding new ways to distribute my music,” he told The Mirror and strangely, by completely shunning the Internet with the release of 20Ten, what Prince has done is given this “outdated” network a golden opportunity to distribute his music on a scale worthy of an artist of his stature. So where can people download this album right now? Well, it seems, absolutely nowhere. Despite the fact that almost 100% of albums leak weeks before their planned release date, 20Ten remains stubbornly offline with just 4 days to go.

I think both covers are incredible. I like the abstract look, and can not wait to get my cd. With Prince's 20Ten cover, it appears like it is saying that Prince is still a work in progress, since the hand is present with the pen in hand. Hmmmm... maybe?

While the comments he made were incredibly dumb, the comments on this article are hilariously butt hurt over someone insulting their interwebz.
Still, it's impressive the album hasn't leaked yet. I still play pokemon. I play warcraft. And I'm awesome.

Wow, the snippets sound totally pandering retro. And I'm loving every minute of it.

Hmm.. not liking the vocals/lyrics on those snippets at all. He is performing each of them in an almost identical fashion. Like lifeless bad rhyming. IMHO! And the music sounds like Prince medley from 20 years ago.
Fingers crossed the full tracks play out better.

the snippits sound pretty good. I hope he keeps a consistent production value to all of them.. and if he chooses to spread his "word".. I hope its cryptic so we can at least enjoy the lyrics. From each snippit the production seems to have a consistent sound and fullness about them. I think that is what made his early music so "repeatable"... they had a simplistic idea that left our minds wanting more.. if he can achieve it in the new album i'd say it will be great.. however, looking at his last albums there hasn't been a consitent album in a long time.. (3121 would probably be the closest)...
we shall see. | |

Completely agree. The sound of the music does sound like his classic 80's sound, a lot more than MplSound. Maybe too much.
"Compassion" sounds like a cross between "Lets Pretend We're Married" and "Lets go Crazy"
Lavaux sound just like The Pointers "Automatic" for some reason.
I do like "Beginning Endlessly", it sounds the most original.
But the vocals, delivery and lyrics sound awful. Just terrible.

what bothers me about the album as a whole is potentially hearing something close to "Hot Summer" and "Cause and Effect".. I didn't see them listed on the new album.. but I hope nothing is even close to those.. I couldn't even get through them.. [Edited 7/6/10 11:39am]

anyone amused by the irony that he says the internet is dead but there is no release date for the US, meaning fans in the US will have to...well ya'll know.
From the samples I might buy it, but I am not going to wait for it. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Exactly, what does he expect U.S. fans to do? I actually have a copy being sent to me but I will be looking for this on Saturday
And buy an official copy whenever it is released here but I sure in the hell am not gonna wait for an official U.S. release!! "Paisley Park is in your Heart"

I found this tracklisting somewhere on the internet. Looks like maybe an earlier configuration of the album?

Ok, in March 2010 The Mirror's circulation was around 1.2 million. The cost of the paper is 45 pence (from what I can gather) which is about 70 cents U.S. Does anyone know what the increase in circulation was for The Mail on Sunday (which had a 2.2 million circulation in '08) when Planet Earth was released? I'm just trying to figure out how much money Prince could have logically made/make.
