While I haven't liked anything he's put out SO FAR in 2010, I still look forward to every song or album with much excitement because hey, if he stopped recording tomorrow, the world would be lacking a certain hue, and the REAL HATERS would have no reason to hang around the org! This coming from someone who is still a little sore over lotusflow3r.com

lol

True. It's like find another target. Move on. It's so simple you don't like anymore, don't listen and move on. No need for the diatribes. It's great to still be interested and want to know what P's new music is about. You dig it that's cool, you don't that's alright too. Discuss fairly, state YOUR reason and move on. No need for all the constant, overt hatred, rudeness, one-sided views and close minded rants. So many seem to make everything so personal. It's just art. And very subjective at that. Have an opinion, fine. Express it. Just don't down others because they don't agree with you. Ok, I'm done. wink

Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

No it's not. It's called 2010. If you caught the 1999 or Purple Rain tours you would have heard "Lady Cab Driver" and "Computer Blue" plenty of times.

Despite the claims of many, Prince actually does a good job peppering in his new material in with old favorites. 10,000 fans at an arena don't want a show of all new/unfamiliar material. However, when playing a smaller venue like a club or Paisley Park, Prince will routinely bust out some obscure/fan favorite stuff...anyone lucky enough to go to the celebrations can attest to that.

Of course, much of that has to do with him going solo from WB.

Exactly. That's all you had to say. Any wonder Prince has consistently been on the mainstream media's radar since he has partnered with big labels in 2004?

U right he did play those...twenty sum years ago and has not since...however Skylites theory was that his new songs were not good because they are not being played live (which they have been and some of them even more than songs that are considered classics from the 80's that are not even singles). I haven not even heard him play Mountains since this year multiple times.

AND I get the response that I thought I would. Some of you agree with me (because we all love Prince's music, but we are honest about it)

And a lot of you think I'm being dramatic of "psycho". That's great.

But can you really, REALLY compare any of this new stuff that he writes to ARTWIAD or Gold or even Musicology? I mean, come on. Hot Summer? Would you like this tune is it was someone else's song? No. It's fodder.

I'm not hating just to hate. I'm just speaking honestly, something that a lot of diehard Prince fans have a problem with.

I only confess this as I hope that one day again I hear an entire album that I will listen to over and over again.

Keep in mind I'm not saying ALL of his new music is crap, but a majority of it is. I like

From the Lotus, Boom, Crimson & Clover, 4ever from LotusFlow3r. I love F.U.N.K I even love Guitar from Planet Earth.

Again, I'm not hating, I'm just being honest.

3121 was the best mainstream record of 2006...

and Musicology and Planet Earth were definitely an improvement over stuff like Rave, TRC or Emancipation...

LF is just Ok (sort of a more relaxed C&D rock album part.II) but MPLS is an utter disappointment for me...

i am excited because dance for me and here are the first undeniable classic prince songs i have heard in a long time .. chelsae, fury, love, call my name even the work all came close but its been a long time since i got that feeling .. now if we can work on his production style ... damn the man used to be known for his production now it is by far his weekest link .. a close runner up being his musical colaborations and band. my point is that he is improving .. as for the main thread theme .. i would say its normal to get pissed off when u feel ripped off and maybe because u know u cant help but buy each and every record and each time u feel like .. is this guy giving me less and less intentionally or is that really all hes got and i am lucky to have it for 12 bucks.

i really like that we get to hear all of prince demos but i really think its time he assemble a really good band and give us the full on freaky funky worked out fine tuned prince

haha. Yes I do write music. In fact our new album and single were released on iTunes this March. Have YOU written any music?

But that has NOTHING to do with the conversation at hand. He does have many brilliant and incredible songs in his catalog, I'm not denying that. I'm saying that his new music is not up to what it once was.

What an intelligent and thoughtful post.

You bought 'MPLSound' and 'Planet Earth' and they were 'shit.' Great critical technique. really constructive.

That makes it unanimous then, both those albums are 'shit.' Thank you for giving your much valued opinion in such an eloquent manner.

You really should be a journalist.

Non-Prince fans have told me that Purple & Gold is terrible and that it proves that Prince is not a "genius". I disagree in the sense that it confirms Prince's genius in that he can write a traditional fight song. I personally do not care for it and couldn't get through it even one time, but I do think it shows his range of abilities.

In general I do feel that Prince is pursuing quantity over quality, but that's just where he's at right now I guess. If you compare songwriting to other things such as the stock market, starting a business, etc. many people "fail" time and time again until they have "success". It may take dozens of songs to create the "perfect" one or the one that catches on with the public. As fans we get to see his process more than most artists by getting many releases - the good, bad and the ugly.

BULLSHITTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the grand scheme of things I have to agree with this statement.

What I don't understand is that Prince doesn't feel the urge to really overcome this once in a while. Why doesn't he use his strongest material from the vault? Why doesn't he take his time in order to come up with the best he could do? Maybe it's an age thing...and he doesn't want to fight no more! wink

[Edited 6/29/10 13:41pm]

What is his idea of STRONG? When with WB, he had people around him who decided whats strong ..now he has too much freedom, he himself said 'too much freedom decays the soul'...Prince for sure has great groundbreaking shit in the vault, the problem is that he doesnt know whats great to OUR ears, just like his sense of style/FASHION..totally different from ours. Think Prince needs a whole bunch of people from all ethinicity and taste, bring them to his place and have a listening party to his vault shit and have a survey...then pick an album from the results. He seem to be horrible at picking his own stuff for release. JUST MY OPINION.

Place ten Prince fans in a room,

no one will agree,

as to what songs really make a boom,

and which should be tossed to sea.

Too many eras and too many changes,

we old school have watched this man,

All of those rhythms and all those ranges,

A different favorite for every fan.

So when you post your opinion,

keep in mind you just might stand alone,

No one view has dominion,

That's the one thing the org has shown.

We are all so full of doody here

I think its the total opposite way round. I have to listen to them loads, theres albums and songs that I've pushed to oneside thinking its boring gone back to it and realised its quite brilliant, a good example of that is MPLSound which i think is great, another is ATWIAD I thought it was boring when it first came out and I kinda still do. but I do that with all artists not just Prince. At the end of the day Prince's owns it he'll release whatever he wants regardless.

it's just a matter of personal taste. ok, his albums did get more patchy but there are still

brilliant songs and even the occasional completely kick ass album.

sometimes there are threads like "what prince song do you absolutely hate" and if those

threads go on long enough, almost every single prince song gets a mention by someone.

lol

as an album, i dislike "Planet Earth", but i think "Lotusflower" (the title disc) is one of his

best albums ever.

likewise, occasional songs like "cause and effect" leave me totally cold, but a song like

"Funk" had me listening to it on repeat for weeks and weeks and it still has me listening

to it once every few days.

i think it's unfair to say that he can't write ANYTHING worth listening to anymore. all of

his music is worth listening to and all of it has some merit. it's not as magical or even as

brilliant as most of his 80s output but it's still nice to listen to.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
