BBC Radio One Suprise Gig Does anyone remember the surprise Prince gig on Radio One some time in the early nineties as I recall. It was oddly hosted by Dave Lee Travis and was a good solid half hour set (Nude tour I think). Any date or other info that would help me track this down on the web would be great.

This from 'The vault.'
7th Sept 1993. Prince plays a 20 minute set in front of an audience of 250 fans in a small concert hall at BBC Broadcasting House in London. The concert was broadcast live over Simon Bates' show on BBC R1. Bates had received a phone call 3 days earlier from Prince's organisation saying that he wanted to do a live gig on Radio 1. According to Bates, Prince wanted to do the gig to thank all the fans in the UK who could not make it to any of the Wembley gigs. At one point Prince stopped the jam with the words, "Whats my name? Confusion. Thank you!".

It was Simon Bates and I remember heating it live and just thinking it was the best thing I'd ever heard, the BBC Radio theatre is tiny and to have the full band in there must have been a logistical nightmare.

The full radio recording is part of Sabotage Records' "Rock over Germany" release which used to be a triple, including a CD-ROM, but which is now circulating as a 2CD set (catalog number: SAB #10/11). Same artwork, just no longer including any video material. Hope this helps.

Seem to remember the version of Pope was really slow and kinda jazzy, and the version of Peach had the extended 'rock-guitar' vamp, which eventually became the lead guitar line on the track Chaos and Disorder. Also 1999 ran into Baby I'm a Star and DMSR, not sure I remember Let's Go Crazy being played though...

I just recently played that set (including the cd-rom) again after collecting dust for a couple of years. What a GREAT set from a great era. And I was there live at those "Rock over germany" gigs and I saw and met Michael B. a few a hours before prince's gig when he was walking through the festival area. He signed my ticket, just like the year before when I met him a few hours before the 1992 Diamonds and Pearls concert in cologne, germany. Great memories.....
