they're both alright. I like the music tracks for both, but they each suffer from the same thing. Too many layers of a very lazy vocal delivery.

I can't answer.

That's like asking me whether I'd prefer to be run over by a truck or run over by a train.

A parody of what Prince music used to be, IMO.

If I have to choose, I have to go with gut instinct. I like Cause and Effect much more than Hot Summer. I don't like that song at all.

But I am not gushing over C & E either.

Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

Having lived with both songs for a while now, i have reached the decision that they are fairly mediocre songs.

But they are certainly not the worst songs Prince has done.

I would have to blow the dust off Diamonds & Pearls for that.

"Cause & Effect", all the way.

It's like a mini Universe of Princely diversity, and some criticize it 4 this reason.

I just dig it.

Unfortunately, I agree with Vitriol here. (And it's not unfortunate because of Vitriol, but because of the poor song quality).

Neither one of these songs are worthy additions to the Prince warchest.

Vitriol, did you like PFUNK?

Well, it should rank amongst the most listenable things he did as of late, but something about the track is not working for me.

So I'm afraid the answer would be 'Yes but no', or maybe 'No but yes'...

Anyway I'd sooner see that (or Glass Cutter) on an album rather than what we saw since 2004.

The man completely lost it. If he deems 'Hot Summer' or 'Flaws and Defects' tracks worth airing (especially after Purple & Gold) it's a clear sign that the man cannot tell his right hand from his left.

But not only 'deems them worth airing' but also seems to be making HS the next single I'm afraid we can only expect Planet Earth II, or something even worse.

It's not just that I feel insulted by those tracks: How can he insult himself in such a way?

I'm 100% with you on these last two tracks. I know some other fans whose opinions I really respect have found things to like on one or both of these songs.

But I truly find them drab and uninspired.

Big chunks of Cause and Effect literally sound like they could have come out of Spinal Tap.

And Hot Summer just sounds like an amateur song writer trying to get something on American Idol.

As far as PFUNK goes, I think it is absolutely magical. Easily the best thing for me since ONA Piano, and that is saying alot because I worship ONA Piano.

I know you like one (MAYBE two songs) from Lotus, but I thought five or six of those were respectable as well. Nothing revolutionary, but certainly good enough to warrant repeated listens.

As far as 3121 and Planet Earth go, I'd rather listen to this....

"Cause & Effect" all the way. It's a solid 3-star song IMO, with a heartfelt message, excellent guitar solos and killer drums. Maybe a bit all over the place, but hey, that's Prince. "Hot Summer" on the other hand is just a fun little jingle for the upcoming European shows... I couldn't rate "Hot Summer" more than 2-stars.

Hot Summer for sure. I don't love it at all, but to me Cause and Effect is one of his worst songs. The hook is just unbelievably cheesy. I would expect better from even the Backstreet Boys . On the other hand, Hot Summer sounds way too much like "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner...

Cause & Effect needed work; I like Hot Summer because of its simplicity. Cause & Effect would be a stronger song with more studio work IMO. It sounded unfinished. I like Hot Summer but it reminded me of Sex In The Summer, which I thought was a stronger song.

Cause and Effect. It at least has sections I enjoy. Hot Summer is just annoying.

PS. Though P&G is far worse than both, and F.U.N.K. is better.

I agree. Two uninspired tracks with horrible production quality. They both sound like some demo Prince put together when he was bored.. But I'll go with C&E, just because it's more interesting than that Cream/Shake parody.

At least, Purple & Gold didn't sound like a demo..
