The one new track where he tapped into the old Prince magic again. Shows what he is still capable of if he'd just let loose once in a while. [Edited 6/20/10 0:04am]

Why Black Sweat is a subpar mediocre song, coming from Prince.
That high octave keyboard whistle that is the signiture of the song is really patronizing. Dr. Dre was the one who had brought it to popular music 13 years earlier. Throughout that time, everybody and their grandma (from rappers to boy bands, etc, etc.) had rode the whistling sound bandwagon to death. So by the time Prince decided to use it in Black Sweat, ... everyone else had already stopped because it was so played out and predictable.
Also for some misguided reason, people keep comparing Black Sweat to Kiss. But the two couldnt be anymore different.
Whereas Kiss was a cutting edge innovation in production. (Reverse phasing effect on the Kick drum. Delay effects on the open Hi-Hat. Fusing with the subtle chords of the marimba keyboard sound.) Black Sweat is instead... just your stock, garden variety, hard pounding Hip-Hop drums. They sound like they could be on anybody else's record.
Now keep in mind, Big Drum sounds where just as much in fashion in the 80's when Prince did Kiss, as they are today, but Kiss was still DIFFERENT, not just pounding and loud. And when Prince did use big sounds, like say on Housequake, the sounds themselves were customized. They didnt sound like every other drum machine on the radio.
Theres nothing innovative or fresh about Black Sweat. Prince is basically doing a version of a Pharrell type song...without undestanding at all what actually makes a good Pharrell song.

Barnabas Collins used to scare the ...outta me when I was a kid. My brother and I used to scream Barnabas Collins!!! at each other and run out of the room to try to scare each other.
Now, Black Sweat is a cool track, I like it. I like the live version when he says, "I got a brand new dance and it's called...the shaker puddin'". Wish he put that on the studio version. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

It always trips me out how someone will write out some long paragraph to hate or express their disdain for something. Like they are doing a mini lecture or dissertation to explain why something is awful...to them.

It's sort of significant that you question one of the most interesting posts of this thread.
This is a discussion board. There's no need to discuss anything if you reduce your opinion to something like "It's a masterpiece" or "A piece of shit".
People who really care about music know what and why they like or dislike something. So when do you actually start to think?

Surprised you got away with posting this. Finally a sista looking sexy in the video. But I don't really like the song. Thought the beat was funky, and trust me some hip hop heads are probably already trying to steal it. I think Prince is maturing in his old age. Riskay for a Jehovah's Witness. I wonder who the sister was in the video who was the DJ. [Edited 6/22/10 2:59am] Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

What makes a good pharell song. I am curious. High pitch has been out there since p funk so no dr dre ain't the inventor. some of u need 2 relax music goes in circles like fashion.

Not a masterpiece, but one of his best post-millenium songs.
Depending on the stereo, that high pitch can be unbearable.
I like the barely-there vocal interplay:
"tell 'em whatchu bout to do boy"
"...sexy..."
It's funny and actually approaches sexy, which is something his music hasn't been able to do for a long time.
Even if it is a very reserved sort of sexy:
"I don't wanna take my clothes off but I do, I don't want to turn nobody on, unless it's you"
It doesn't cut it lyrically. The video, in my opinion, is one of the most enjoyable and professional he's ever done.

Love the song & it's video.
Semi naughty, in yo face haughty ("You better take your woman & hide. 'Cause I'm about to") Prince coming at us.
Fake or not...the sweat & heat on & off of Prince's face, the last minutes of this video made me say "Oh my. Naughty wants out!"

This song would have been a top 10 hit in the 80's. Radio just caters toward the young artist now...If Pharell would have recorded it . It would have been on every radio station... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Ha ha ha ha ha @ that video of those kids. That was funny and subtle as all get out. That link will not last till the end of the day on here, you know the mods will pull it because his music is in it. But the video is cute as all get out. Dude in the center kind of reminds me of RayJay.
