i realy thought after NEWS and EXPECTATION........... Prince was taking the mantle of elder statesman-shunning the charts, which frankly a man of prionces age chasing chart glory was a little undignified
and becoming increasingly experimental albeit in a TUNEFUL way-as opposed to going down the ascension route!!
musicology was to me"yeah its that easy-look what you been missing"
but listening to half of hot summer it seems i was wrong
no i dont hate it-im utterly indifferent to it
i thought by now prince would have been like a crazy musical scientist but instead hes doing what hes doing what he does when he does it!
i realy believe that hes almost above critiscsm and hell he can do what he wants-i mean the guys knocking on 60
its just surprised me this almost constant "hey get me back in the charts BS"

prince is in love with his ego more than artistic credibility ie. seeing his name on the charts. Hot summer is hot doo-doo. I gave up on him making any kind of artistic statement years ago. The only way he'll peak my interest again is by working with some outside influences or getting an album produced by a rick rubin or someone of that ilk. Until then i'll just check him out live & on the telly. [Edited 6/14/10 20:43pm]

I agree a little bit.
However, I don't see how this is aimed at the charts when it's only been sent to a local public radio station and isn't available to purchase.
but honestly I'm more likely to listen to Hot Summer than NEWS and Xpectation. in fact, I've only listened to it about 4 times, and I probably already have listened to it more than those snoozers.

I must be the only person thinkin' he could care less about the charts. P relased two songs on a local station that reminds me of college radio that only so said person going to so said college would know about the station. If it charts cool, if it doesn't meh, that's what I think P things with his music. His music, from my point of view is still cutting edge. 1/2 of music still won't be played on TRADITIONAL top 40 radio. Perhaps the slow jams but, the so called pop music, won't ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

How is it one minute we celebrate Prince as "the most diverse artist in history", yet when he does what he's good at, like make a simple pop tune, we get all bent out of shape about it? Writing pop songs for Prince is just as much of his "diversity" as writing something like N.E.W.S. or Xpectation, or something funky like 1999.
As far as the charts - eh. He wants songs to be hits and to be heard by the 400,000 fans he still has, but the way the numbers are counted is what remains in question to many artists.
Let's not hold our expectations of Prince on Prince. He's been a mad genius in the past, and it shows. People take a lot of his early work for granted, thinking it was just him being him, BUT he created a sound that people copied as much as people like him copied James Brown.
He put the Linn through guitar pedals and detuned them to create awesome songs like "Private Joy", "Something In The Water", and tons of others. He recorded the drum track to four songs in a row, in one take. Then went back and put the bass line down in the same fashion, then the keyboards, then the percussion. That's the opening 4 tracks to Parade. He took the bass line out of songs and created moments of genius, like "When Doves Cry", "High Fashion", and "Kiss" (although we know "Kiss" was really someone else's creation). He took live jam sessions, then made them into real songs, like he did on SOTT. He let mistakes become the signature of the song like the lack of high end on "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker", or the misaligned vocals on "Forever In My Life". He creates whole songs on one chord like "America", and "Hello".
Just a few examples of his mad scientist moments. Let's not forget those things. They are what made Prince Prince.

Nothing is twisted. Read with an open mind. No one is contradicting you. In fact, I'm backing up some of what you said. Know what I mean?
