Probably for the same reason they gave the award to drug addicts (Whitney), adulterers, (Al Green), and Tax Evaders. (Isley Bros.)

If you can't see the excellence in Prince's music and see how influential he's been, you're in the wrong fucking place and you need to get your ears checked.

Just a message for the rest of the people of this board.

Black music is about the same thing every color of music is about. Excellence and class are subjective, but Prince is about nothing if not excellence by most people's definition. Class is ridiculous. Jesus and his followers wore clothing that by today's standards would amount to little more than rags and sandals, yet if you came to a modern religious gathering dressed like that you would not be considered classy.

Perhaps I'm not understanding you, but Michael Jackson excelled at very little beyond dancing. Any excellence he may have represented in music was made possible by his producers, musicians and the folks who helped him write his songs. Let's face it: Michael Jackson was an entertainer. While there's nothing wrong with that and there can certainly be elements of artistry in entertainment, what he did musically can scarcely be described as art. You can describe it as hard work assigned to him by others, but the artistic aspect of it is a real stretch.

If you must compare the two based on their most commercially AND artistically successful works, Purple Rain is like Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and Thriller is an episode of "The Waltons", (but MORE family-friendly).

Dag, I almost missed this. When is it coming on? It's about time Prince is being honored by his own, no matter how jacked up and a squandered waste BET has always been. It has got to feel good being honored by your own.

Wonder why the hell Kayne has not been banned from appearing anywhere period. I always disliked Kayne long before the "Bush Hates Black People" ramble, and long before he singlehandedly is responsible for us having to sit through goodness knows how many Taylor Swift Grammy awards following that crazy stage bogart. I hate Kayne. And I don't say that often. I think his head is way to big for his body, both literally and figuratively.

By the way....again...it's great that Prince is being honored. He should bitchslap Kayne if he sees him anywhere near the stage during his presentation and/ or performance.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

iam not here to compare apple and oranges. sf my point is that there are other people that are still alive that they can give this award to besides prince. prince did not write and compose all of the music that we all heard and love, just ask his band mates.

The Isley Brothers biggest songs were covers. Same with Witney Houston.

James Brown's bandmembers said the same thing about him.

So, I guess BET shouldn't have awarded them either.

God, you are completely and utterly full of shit.

I just read that Queen Latifah is going to be the host. She's very well-spoken and is always a great award show host, so at least that part is covered. Don't have to worry about stupidity from someone like Jamie Foxx again.

Jackson 35, know your facts-the woman who threw hot grits on Al Green, thus causing his religous conversion was indeed a married woman. Read the vibe article on the incident

I thought about that too. I hope this isn't the case though. Hopefully Stephen Hill has better sense than that. Last year's show was a MJ lovefest. Understandably so, considering the timeframe. Let MJ get his proper tribute since last year's was rushed, but let's not make another 2-3 hour show about dude.

And don't play up that same ole tired rival crap in Prince's presence or during his tribute. That wouldn't be cool at all. Just give the man his shine with real artist and musicians please! Don't give a damn about who's popular right now. Maybe just maybe some young kid(s) will be inspired and learn something.

I truly dread having to listen to Queen Latifah and 3 hours of bad hip hop and fake R&B just to see the Prince part. Any suggestions on how I can record the Prince part and not have to endure the whole thing? While BET post the show online where I can edit out all of the other garbage and just keep Prince? My DVD recorder will record the entire show and I dont have a DVR.

Their covers of Hello, it's Me, and Summer Breeze were extremely popular on the radio.

the woman who scalded Al Green was NOT divorced. She left her husband to be with Al, but they were still married.

In this article, it mentions that Mary Woodson, who threw the grits on Al was married.

Christopher to Tricky "I'm coffee, you're chocolate. We definitely have different fathers!"

(it may've been mothers, I haven't watched it for a while, so don't pick lol)

the correct quote is " butterscotch...chocolate we definently have different fathers!"

I just saw a clip on BET with Stephen Hill at the Shrine in preparation for the BET Awards, and was being interviewed. A pic of Prince was flashed on the screen, and Steve said "Oh yeah, and then there's that guy Prince". He had a big smile on his face when he said that but was hush on saying anything more. Stephen said we will see an MJ tribute like something we've never seen before. I guess they're a making up for the rushed tribute they had last year. Also, he said Kanye West will be opening the BET awards show.

Here's an updated list of performers. I highlighted the names in green, that has been recently added to the updated list:

http://betawards.bet.com/...ees/prince

ALICIA KEYS
DIDDY - DIRTY MONEY
DRAKE
TREY SONGZ
USHER
NICKI MINAJ
LUDACRIS
MARVIN SAPP
T.I.
KANYE WEST
RICK ROSS
DJ KHALED
EMINEM
T- PAIN
KIM BURRELL
YOLANDA ADAMS
FRED HAMMOND
KIRK FRANKLIN
KAREN CLARK SHEARD
