imo, the more money and fame he ammassed, the less free he became.

he cant leave the house whenever he likes without it becoming an organized zoological event, for example.

big rich superstars appear to have more freedom, but do they really?

maybe they're all slaves to a far greater machine than you or i, or record execs.

Prince isn't even free to do what he likes in his own bedroom without everyone knowing about it at some point.

way i see it, excessive fame plus wealth is a prison of it's own peculiar kind, and something which record execs may never experience or comprehend.

at least they can come and go as they please without having to enlist security guards and protocols for everyone to follow.

maybe lots of fame and money doesnt necessarily equate with freedom, but quite the opposite.

he's been musically free for a while, although some might even argue that, and say too much money and fame has ruined his music.

"too much fame causes spiritual decay" < i think thats one of his own lyrics.

well.. he got himself into that position. i dont see why he cant get himself out

if he really didnt want to be rich and famous anymore he could make it happen

he knew what it took to be a superstar and he knew he had what it took to become one

yeah its lonely at that top but it can be just as lonely at the bottom

i agree. he can leave the grid anytime he likes.

I really disagree with above statement. If Prince didn't want to be "Rich" anymore yeah he could make that happen. He could do absolutely nothing about Fame at this point. Even if he hit the bottoms and became a street walker, cameras would be following him. America loves to watch the fall of the very rich, and the especially seem to take great pleasure in watching folks wallow. Look at what they did too poor Britney Spears (and trust me I am by no means a Britney fan). Prince needs money at this time to protect his person, to protect his being. He has some real craze-o's out there there would do him tremendous harm (ie. lock him away and make him sort of a musical sex slave). He needs that money to remain secure. Heck even not so attractive David Letterman had a serious female stalker out there. So what I'm saying is that once you have the FAME you NEED the wealth to just basically survive. Especially if you are on Prince's level. Unless you move to some remote country somewhere that bans secular music....ie. some Islamic Republic. Prince said on Tavis Smiley that he does not have a formal fan club because there are people that would do him harm. He said that there was an incident where someone tried to break into his home. A slave very much indeed....for the remainder of his natural life, or as long as he lives in the United States.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Now that is a possible scenerio, but who really want's that? Really? And it's not like he could live in any really established country. He tours the world. He'd have to live in some remote village where he probably couldn't even speak the language. That's ludercrist. That man's fate is sealed for the rest of his life and theres nothing at this point that he can do about it.

fair to say it's not up to his fans. i guess if its something he wanted to do, he'd do it.

suggesting he has no power over his own life, is ludicrous, imo, no disrespect.

fame is easy to ditch, its not impossible, once the vision is clear, its smooth sailing.

Prince doesnt strike me as a fatalist, he's always carved his own path, within limitations, and without them.

puts a whole different light on the word 'emancipation' though, doesnt it.

a more likely scenario for him remaining where he is would be that maybe after 30 years of living in a fame-cage he's become 'institutionalised' and wouldnt know where to start with real freedom.

but i'm sure he'd pick it up in no time, just like everything else.

Just read the article on the flight home yesterday and I loved the photos. Very cool shots and as for the Q&A part it was pretty guarded when he answered the questions but that's classic Prince. I'll probably have to read it again to find the hidden meanings behind his words. He does seem quite comfortable with his spirituality and that's good for him. I do hope the music he's working on sees some sort of release at some point. I'm pretty sure he played 'Hot Summer' for the Ebony crew since that's how they promoted the article prior to it's release. Nice also to see that he's happy with Bria. He deserves it. Peace up Prince!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Just got around to reading the Ebony interview over the weekend. What a boring interview. They call it the World According to Prince. There was nothing new in this interview, just a lot of the same old. The pictures were nice, but interviewing Prince is like watching paint dry.

Removed his music from my ipods. It's like a fingernail on chalkboard. This is music I previously loved!

I don't appreciate his statements, nor his views, towards "whites," in the Ebony magazine article. I'm happy to know the truth, regarding his sentiment. It's better than ignorance.

It was a non-interview, non-article. The questions were predictable fluff. I imagine that Prince set parameters and wasn't willing to talk about much. What a let down. Good pics though.

Did anyone catch that the article gave the impression that Bria actually sang while the Ebony folks were at Paisley Park. I mean...sang in front of people other than Prince?

And what makes me think this is absolute bullshit?

yep, like the rest of the article it's all maybe or maybe not. Bria may have sang with the 3 girls but the chance of her singing a solo are slim. With Shelby J and her strong voice right beside Brias kittenish one, who would know how good or bad Bria sounded anyway? I will always wish that Prince gave the Elixer CD to Shelby J. It's really unfortunate that the man's choice of who to promote is often not based on talent.

Whatever bitterness Prince has towards the past, he is clear with his description of "whites" and "black music", he has no problem, driving off current Caucasion fans. Would he give this same speech to Rolling Stone?

If I knew his perspective in the first place, I would have never given him the time of day, much less travel to his concerts, along with ticket, hotel, plane fare, time off work, etc.

This interview was unbelievable poor judgement on his part.

Although, I'd rather know his true character.

Addendum: I was raised with religion/Jesus as a kid. Mass, formal instruction, etc. Since when, does an adult, need another adult, to hold his/her hand regarding religious practice??

Prince has "ex-druggie" written all over.

Remaining "fresh"? The "box office" has been his gauge, was Prince's response. What happened to the art of making music, whether fans like it or not? I'm a little bit confused about the businessman, JW convert, and whatever the heck he is......including loony.

Now with that I couldn't agree more and that would explain why Bria won over Shelby.

We know it's not about singing ability, in fact, it never is with the man.

Anywho, I think the word Egyptian should be replaced with European or Caucasian. That would be more accurate when discussing Prince's preferences. Egyptian is too closely linked to African. And I doubt he has ever been "sexually" linked to anyone who looks anywhere near African.

Yes, there is a definite difference between those who live in the North vs South African. My brother dated a Northern African and she looked very much hispanic.

So that does validate the Egyptian-trait comment. I wasn't even thinking about my ex-sister-in-law when I commented to that post.

Actually, I do agree with you, also, when you mentioned possible self-hatred.

He grew up in a predominantly Caucasian city/state and most likely was teased for not only his height, but his race as well.

Spinlight said:

Prince can liken himself to Ike Turner all he wants. Ike Turner was, amongst many things, a talented man whose troubles surmounted his creativity and his business savvy - thus ruining not only his music career, but his marriages. Do we, as fans with a bit of insight into Prince, consider him of the same troubled calibre? Maybe. He's spiritually conflicted, to say the least, but whether or not his spiritual eccentricities owe to his malformed vision of slavery and CONtracts is - i guess - interpreted by the reader. Thus, some people will excuse him for his outlandish claims and take them as gospel because... Why? He's black and has been repeatedly shunned from the music industry either by the companies themselves or the music buying public (who just doesn't want his current music)?

Prince was given multiple opportunities to rule the music industry with an iron fist and every single time he was given this opportunity, he squandered it in greed, naivete, and professional onanism. He could not bear the burden of really contributing to artists under his control because his ego and his deranged sense of entitlement is extremely off-putting. Humility is something decades-lost on Prince. It is because of this arrogance that has many people have succumbed to the Bizarro World Midas Touch (aka, when he touches their career, it dies). It is also because of this that he has suffered so much in the music industry.

Exec after exec has come forward, producers, engineers, agents, bandmembers, dancers, and other people attached to his entourage at one time or another have all said the same thing. Prince is a genius when it comes to crafting songs, but he is willfully negligent when it comes to his own career and the interests of those he employs, much less his posterity or his dreadfully loyal fanbase.

Stop giving him excuses to rely on. His assertion that Yes Men are toxic is laughable at best. In fact, he has surrounded himself with nothing but Yes Men for the better part of 20 years now and it has slowly eroded his legacy. He will, eventually (if not already) dissipate into the annals of rock history as a genius-gone-wrong who had the world in his hands for a good 10 years and proceeded to pluck the petals away one by one until there was nothing left but his own distorted kingdom of sand.

You can praise him for his humble status at the moment all you want. He isn't humble, though. His spirituality is vanity. His studies of history and henceforth his retelling of it is ironic and hollow. For someone who recites black history like a copy editor at News of the World, he certainly raked in the cash hand over fist while those White Men Who Enslaved Him bent over backwards to accommodate his greedy demands and outlandish threats.

All the while, in his house he lays dreaming of being a paragon of black enterprise as his back catalog rots in antiquity. A fresh, rejuvenated SOTT? Never. A deluxe edition of LoveSexy? Not on his watch. Without his superfluous and insipid remixes and remakes of his torch songs, Prince will have nothing to do with those albums... That is, unless he can entice you to go to his concerts (which become more and more vaudeville as the years go by), by saying this is the last time he will perform them. Or he will hum, plink on the piano, or strum a few bars of a song that is entirely incongruous with his current "religion" just so the hair on your arms stand up in anticipation before chugging into a full version of "Pass the Peas" or "The Christ".... Barf.

Thanks for the interview with Ebony, P. No, really. We needed another dissertation on black poverty and how black people are/were/will be/can be/should be/would be from the mouth of someone who can give away a half assed album for free with a newspaper and still make 2 million dollars while the US government forecloses on the houses of artists like T-Boz (you know, your favorite band, right?) and others.

Physician, heal thyself.

This post is amazing.

Prince wants the truth? Well, here it is.
