There's no real "story" to it. There were two rerecorded versions of "Somebody's Somebody" that appeared on CD 1 of a 2CD set for "The Holy River". (Disk 2, which you had to buy separately, had the radio edit of the title song , as did Disk 1, and "TMBGIW (Mustang Mix)", an edit of "Somebody's Somebody", and "On Sale Now", which was basically a 0:48 commecial (similar to what he did on Rave Un2)). The two mixes were "Livestudio Mix" which is 3:47, and "Ultrafantasty Edit" which ran 3:45.

Both CDs had their own artwork, which differed slightly on the front (disk 1 on the left, disk 2 on the right in green), but were similar inside. The 2nd disk came in a slimline case, whereas Disk 1 came in a regular jewel case made to hold 2 CDs (the idea being you bought CD2, and put it in CD1's case so you had the 'set'). CD1 also came with 3 exclusive prints of Prince.

Both CDs also came with a postcard addressed to

It backs up my argument that Emancipation, whittled down slightly, and with live drums and a band, could have been a farkin' masterpiece. The dry drum programming by Kirk J., and the one-man band show Prince put on, left it sounding like a reel of demos almost.

I like it, but I prefer the album version. The slow jam vibe of it works better in that context. As for when the Livestudio mix was recorded, my guess would be early '96 when he was working on and re-working tracks for Chaos & Disorder, when he brought the recently-fired NPG lineup back in for some studio work. the version of the NPG that he had on hand when this single was released wasn't really a recording-calibre band yet at that point. the album version uses the same backing track as the late '94 Exodus version with Derek Hughes on lead vocals.

One of my favorite eras if not, my favorite. This was one of the most prolific eras for P too. Gold, Chaos and Emancipation all within a few years of one another.

I loved the livestudio version and the remix. In fact I even love the (originally planned) unreleased version by.. er.. was it Derrick Hays or someone?

I would love to get a full album of 'livestudio' versions of Prince classic tracks. In fact, I'm shocked he's never released one considering that warners can't release a greatest hits again. Would be a great way of revisiting these tracks, giving fans something a bit different and ensuring Warners got minimal revenue from them.

Oh and one day, I'm gonna get around to using those Funky Ass Loops samples by Sonny & Michael and just for my own pleasure, i'm gonna beef up my favourite Emancipation tracks to give them a more NPG trio feel. Though I've been procrastinating about that for about 4 years now, so it might be a while!

I love both, but I think the Livestudio mix is better also. Great version.
