Prince's Privacy maybe its none of our business what color underwear he wears, if he ever wears it, or what type of toothpaste he uses, or whether he waxes his butt or not etc.. but where is the line when discussing his sex-life, or his religion, considering he openly expresses both, in his work?
what aspects of his sex-life and religion do you think are OK to discuss, and which do you think would be a very direct invasion of his privacy? this too shall pass

You've answered your own question really. If it's in his lyrics or a magazine interview I suppose it's open for discussion. Anything else is conjecture and known only to him (you should even argue that song lyrics are not necessarily autobiographical or about whoever his particaulr muse is at that point in time). Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Everytime i see a post like this a get afraid because i told someone to open a book. which in the content was his life. At the time i though i would be great idea i see not But we are on a fansite and some how i felt like a star being judge and it doesn't feel good . It's wrong when the tables has turn. I keep asking forgiveness because i admire this person. I don't know if he see or heards . In a friendship you have to trust in tried to show this person but i think( NO) So i can give this advice if you don't know and don't respect people privacy . just look in the mirror somethings you wouldn't like want you see. I hope this person can forgive me..where ever this person is. I just wanted to help but i didn't know how too..

is there a difference between privacy, and secrets? this too shall pass

I have always thought that knowing too much about his private life would spoil some of of the mystery surrounding Prince. The music is there for us all to listen to and analyze whether the lyrics are autobiographical or not. But knowing what toothpaste he uses and what he had for dinner last night and any of that trash is really of no importance whatsoever to most of us. As regards to his religous beliefs and sex life, if he chooses to place that sort of subject matter in his lyrics, then they should be able to be up for open discussion if one should choose to do so.

ok, cuz someone recently asked me to keep a secret for them, but they used the words "it's private", and i thought hmm, no, its not really private, its something you dont want anyone else to know about, so its a secret. thanks for confirming. this too shall pass

Well, if it's in his lyrics... then presumably he wants his audience to think about them and even discuss them...
It is interesting that though Prince is a private person, his lyrics are deeply personal... [Edited 6/8/10 7:50am]

yeah i find that interesting too, his work is personal, but maybe its more about the art of it in terms of what it means to us? and not what he experienced before he wrote the lyrics, or what he meant when he wrote them, or even who they are about?
thats what i mean when i ask where the line is. its a bit confusing. this too shall pass

Considering this is a guy who bore his bare butt on MTV, masturbated his guitar all over the audience, Humped the stage, simulated showering on stage, simulated making love to his woman on stage, wore bikini briefs and thigh highs, sang songs like, Head, Jack U off, Sexuality, Do me Baby, International Lover, Lady Cab Driver, Darling Nikki, Temptation, Tick Tick Bang, Violet the Organ Grider, Gett Off, Cream, Pussy Control, 319...and more recently sang about "going down south" in On the Couch...and in regards to Religion...Considering this is a guy who cant stop taking about it and has talked and sang about God throughout his entire career..sometimes in a borderline Blasphemous fashion... Im sure its ok to discuss whatever we see fit, without the worry of invading his privacy. We cant bring up anything that he hasnt already put out there for us to discuss. If he feels we cross the line on some of these topics, then perhaps he should have rethought most of his actions and song output for the majority of his career.

Some people confuse a star's stage persona with their real life. It is part of Prince's job to create a fantasy for both his fans and the people around him (at this stage in his life, anyway).
But Prince takes shits and wipes his ass just like you and I. Do I want to know about which way you wipe? No. People should afford him the same convenience of privacy. If it ain't part of the show, if it ain't offered up to the crucible by the man himself, then I don't give a shit.

i can see how some of his lyrics might be fantasy, just not sure if thats the case for all of them.. ? this too shall pass

It is difficult to know. I assume a lot of the love songs are deeply personal, true experiences. But maybe I'm being naive about that. He sings with a lot of passion... maybe I'm just being fooled.
It is probably a mixture of truth and fiction...

maybe we all are, but yeah i can see how his lyrics might be a mixture of fact and fiction. makes it hard to know what to take seriously though. this too shall pass

We all have personal life robinhood and i don't see Prince lyric as a gateway to his life. thats my too cents.

Sure, not all of them are fantasy, but I don't necessarily think it's any of the public's actual business. I think celebrity and fame, in this day and age, has been exploited to somehow humanize stars who are larger than life. On a similar tack, this is why reality TV is just so popular. Everyone can be a celebrity and every celebrity is an "every man" so to speak.
They aren't, though. Stars like Prince work to create an ambiguity and a stage persona and a fantasy (along the same lines as Bowie, Mercury, Clinton, and to a lesser/different extent Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc). The keynotes of Prince's success lie in his quirks and, as stated, his larger-than-life presence. Muddying that up with mining the minutiae out of his life is, in my opinion, unnecessary and tedious.

Because some people can write about trees and you would think it was about a woman. i just show what i wrote ... the is wild that just came off the top of my head

I agreed but i am not trying to disrespect robinhood post but it feels like( the outer limits)
Because we all know that lyric comes in different forms like he some are true some are not.

seems to be a catch-22 situation: he sings about things that mean something to him, but what it means to him is none of our business, because we've taken it too far by forgetting its all just a show at the end of the day, and making it any more realistic than it really is, becomes invasive and naive.
still wonder though, if its fair to ask questions like: "do Jehovah's Witnesses support Prince's artistic/fantastical choice to sing about sex?" this too shall pass

Is it fair to ask whom? Prince? I don't think Prince can speak on the JW's opinions of his work, but I know that the church itself hasn't spoken in disapproval of his work in the past 13 years he's been attached to them.
What we can glean from our knowledge of JW teachings and of Prince's current output, is that he has turned away from the more obviously salacious stuff in favor of celebrating sexuality within the confines of marriage. Should he desire to sing about sex outside of a marriage, he typically tends to make it extremely obscure and the lines are so blurred that it could be interpreted a number of ways (what song immediately comes to mind is "Valentina").

sure ok, i respect that. so if his lyrics are not a gateway to his life, then maybe they're just a mirror, and who's on the other side remains a mystery. i can appreciate the vibe of that, but ultimately i want to know who's music i'm supporting, and buying. maybe that comes with getting older and not being prepared to buy the false image, in favor of some catchy tunes. i like honest musicians who arent afraid to reveal who they really are. this too shall pass
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
mm guess he's been very clever in that regard, even though its still pretty obvious what he's singing about.
suppose we could rally together some JW elders and get their honest opinion of his work since he converted. would be interesting to hear what they have to say. this too shall pass

Of course he does. At the end of the day, he's human. But again, his private life is truly none of our actual business. Whether you think everything he writes is deeply personal or not.
