The song is intended for a general audience and not for a pannel of musical experts. And as a listener and a collector of pretty much everything prince, I find this a dissapointing song. Nothing more, nothing less.
People get freaky about it because last two songs that were leaked to us aren't really that memorable, and it triggers the idea that we pretty much have seen the best of prince.
If the song wasn't by prince, nobody would have even bothered to have an opinion about it. It would go under the radar completely.
But you like it? fine by me. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

U fake fairweather so called Prince fans will regret all of this ur saying if Prince passed away like MJ did a year ago. UR the most selfish judgemental people I ever experienced. Prince just made another birthday and still blessing u with new music & ur still comparing it to his past music and being unappreciative of it. U people must live horrible lives to be this mean and angry all the time. U should be happy that he is still here to make music at 52 years old.......Plus most of U are not even musicians just haters. Most of U are haters & evil people....... [Edited 6/9/10 14:55pm] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

nope, we'll just lament that he wasted the last part of his life doing subpar material. The song is the best of these independent tracks that have come out but it's totally uninspired regardless of how fun it makes you feel. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I think it's safe to say that most of us would feel a great sense of shock and loss if Prince met an early demise. He has been a large part of our collective musical landscape for 30 years in the case of us old schoolers.
That doesn't mean we have to pull any punches when we don't like the music, the condescending attitude towards those that don't believe his version of "the Truth", the use of Princebonics in a professional magazine interview(WTF?), bragging about how much money he will make for a jazz festival show and so on.
If Prince gives us killer music, we'll say it. I don't think many folks had harsh words about the Leno "Somewhere Here On Earth" performance. That was a fairly recent "holy shit" moment.
But if Prince puts out absolute garbage like Purple And Gold and folks expect no reaction... it isn't going to happen, no matter what we think of Prince and his historic legacy of great material.
I really like Hot Summer, but if someone else doesn't, I do not give a shit and feel no obligation to rally the troops in defense of the ditty. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Haha I love that everyone gets so upset when lots of fans don't like a new song that they do. It's insanity. I've been on lots of message boards where I felt like I was the only one who liked a new song/album by a band/artist... but I never attacked and lambasted the people on the forum who disagreed with me or whose views I didn't understand. Such insanity.
"You'll feel bad about this when Prince dies" is a disgusting guilt-tripping attempt to make someone feel bad for... not enjoying a three minute ditty about a hot summer? Put some perspective on this folks.

the only dissapointing thing about this song is the fact that it isn't prince singing lead on it. prince posseses (in my opinion) the loveliest voice in the world, and although i appreciate that he wrote or performed the music, unless he is singing over it, for me, somehow it should remain an instrumental, because somebody else singing lead vocal just kills it for me, always has. i understand that prince wants to collaborate with other artists, i just wish he would leave those collaborations as duets, or more minor roles for the second/third etc person. or as he has done with varying levels of commercial success, release them in the name of said other artist, leaving his releases pure prince, or at least half prince!! also, the knokcing of cause and effect confuses me on this thread, i really like it..the 'hey!' bits perhaps could have been left out but i listen to it all the time, and i understand why people don't like purple and gold but it was never meant as a normal release, it was something he wrote in a spur of the moment way for his local sports team, personally i find it really relaxing and play it quite alot, but the point is that you can't judge prince's talent on a glorified football chant and what is essentially a protegee project as he isn't singing lead on it.. if everyone is so insistent upon judging his current musical ability then the only piece to truly look to is cause and effect as it's the only straight forward prince-track of the year so far! the other two are a football song and as i said what is essentially a protegee release. i'm pretty sure hot summer isn't meant to be a groundbreaking musical masterpiece, it's what i assume to be a throwaway track given to local radio as a nice gesture, no more, no less. **NPGMC refugee**

Don't be jaded... there are not 'lots of fans' disliking this song.
There are a FEW people on prince.org that don't like the song. People on here always act like whatever they read on these forums is consensus...
Far from it.
Someone said it earlier--- same few people making the same comments near everytime. So boring....

U shouldnt take the internet so seriously. People are evil because they don't like a song? most the people that dislike this song have been fans for decades and just think and know he could do better, it sounds like lazy crap to many and people are well entitled to voice there opinions on it. Prince is not judgemental on things? hes voiced his opinions on many things in past somethings that has been offensive too. But people really do care about him a lot, if they didnt 99% wouldn't be here, do u really think people would waste so much time on somebody they hate? no way! its more a of frustration with the man because of the way he is sometimes, nobody hates him. I think people care about him too much to be honest. FUNKNROLL! "February 2014, wow". 'dre.

Yes, I've heard nothing that compares to Prince. If any did, why are they not on the cover of a major magazine?? Where are the grammys?

Wait a sec, I am voicing my opinion... it's a personal opinion of those of "U" who are voicing theirs... so what's wrong with posting in bold?? Princebonics: Hmmmmmm does this say eric319.org or prince.org?? LMAO. and, I would go there because I'm really certain that I can be a lot more sarcastic than you, er.. "U"

Where are the magazine covers and grammys Prince has got on the back of 'Hot Summer'. I'd warrant that If he'd only made songs of this 'quality' we would never have heard of him. MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

Yeah except there are plenty of people here who liked LotusFlow3r who hate these new songs... just like ernest, who hates most of Prince's new stuff from what I can tell, likes this song (for some reason).

Is this a joke? This song sounds like something that would be used in a commercial for suntan lotion.
At this point, the nicest thing I can say with every new Prince song is that at least he isn't Justin Bieber. That's about all he has going for him as a recording artist. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I do not like what this song sounds like.
Many of us feel as if ol' boy is wasting his talent. Knowing him, he'll follow up with something extremely funky. But it's not worth it, to me, to stink up the joint and follow with a winner. Prince has a history of IMBALANCE; 1 hit song, followed by a dud, or vice versa.
No matter how he follows up, this song is forgettable. And I'm tired of having to listen to his music thirty-leven times before I 'get it'. What the hell maaaan...give us the best of you! Every time!

if he's half the smart-business man i know he is, he'll give this song to a suntan lotion company, rake it in, and give me 50% of the profits, for being the first to come up with the idea this too shall pass
