I kind of liked "Cause and Effect". Not single material (although Prince stopped even trying to release singles with the last two albums and it kind of makes sense), but certainly something I would listen to a few times on an album.
The best thing I can say about "Hot Summer" (which CERTIANLY doesn't live up to it's title) is that it isn't "Purple and Gold". It's a big letdown, though. I'm mostly annoyed by the sort of listless female background (or rather lead) vocals. Technically not bad singers, but this ain't a duet, so give us Prince vocals. I might give it another try but I have to say that I'd be fine if it doesn't get a commerical release and there is a part of me that would love to have ALL orginal Prince songs on CD or at least digtial if possible.

I'll have to listen again later, but I didn't think it sounded like Shelby to me. She's got such a strong voice, which I happen to like on certain songs, but the woman singing on Hot Summer doesn't have that 'beefy' sound like SJ.

I agree. Just listened once, but his music generally grows on me.

Agadoo is a fun little song. But this is Prince not Black Lace.
But you have set your expectations so low you will take this and enjoy it. Good luck bud. [Edited 6/7/10 15:07pm] [Edited 6/7/10 15:08pm]

Hey, now this motherfucker ain't bad on first listen. [ snip - luv4u] If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think this song would sound much better in the car or at the beach instead of at home off the computer. At first I didn't like it but it's growing on me.

I like it "I pride myself on working with great musicians, and I consider her to be as such. She's an amazing talent, the real deal." Prince on Beyoncé ♥

I dig it.
The music is better than a lot of his recent output.
But the lyrics are as simple as fingerpainting.
I would love it with Wendy and Lisa singing background. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

Oh yeah...Prince doesnt celebrate his Bday anymore, but gives us a "present" on his special day?
I wonder if the Council of Elders or whatever they're called will want to talk to him. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

I dig it.
First listen, hearing I Like It There, Cream, Peach, Gotta Stop qualities

very similar to 'gettcha groove on' i.e. very lite, very poppy and cute. Look it's a freebie so lets chill.

You know, I typed out and then deleted at least twice a comment stating that for some reason this song made my mind drift to Lisa and Wendy, and I wondered about how it might've sounded had they been a part of it...and I'm not one that is constantly bemoaning the passage of time and that L & W and Prince all moved on from one another. It's just that Hot Summer has a feel or vibe to it (for me) that brought Lisa and Wendy into my consciousness. Dunno.
I didn't post my comment before because I didn't want anybody to smack me and yell about Lisa and Wendy being gone and to get over it!

You know how Prince is able to take an okay song and make magic when performed live?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not gonna smack you. They would've been just as good and put their own special magic on it. That being said, I still like the song the way it stands. I'm good with it.

First of all: Happy Birthday, Prince!!!"
Thanks for the new song.
The song sounds like a demo to be honest. And I keep hearing similarities to Foreigner's "Hot Blooded."
The Viking Song was more of an Homage to the old high school fight songs / college songs of the past.
Cause and Effect seemed to be a Lotus Flower outtake.
To be honest I am not liking the new material yet and again maybe they are just demos to test the waters to see in what direction should a new album go.

I wish Prince would give us No More Candy. Larry Graham stole my teddy bear.

At least this song wasn't hyped up days beforehand like "Cause & Effect", and smartly so, as I didn't have time to build up expectations and then be let down. This song came as a complete surprise when I logged in today, so I can take it for what it's worth, a fun little free track to make my day more interesting.

When I first heard this song it immediately reminded me of Cream...and I also thought about Wendy and Lisa when I heard the female chorus as another orger pointed out here. I like it a lot as a catchy fun song that would be perfect to play at the Santa Cruz boardwalk next weekend.

This one is funny, catchy & happy, nothing major but i like it.
I'd rather get a jazzy album in the mood of "No Light In A Large Room", but if "Cause & Effect" & "Hot Summer" are any indication, we'll get something closer to Planet Earth. So be it... A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Actually, the DJs said that they've had it for a couple of weeks, sitting on it, wondering when to premier it and decided on his birthday. They acknowledged that he doesn't celebrate birthdays. They had said that they sent Prince's assistant and email, wishing him a happy birthday, in which she replied that he didn't celebrate them. They then asked if they could put the song on the radio today, and she said, "absolutely!"

The lead female vocalist doesn't sound like Janelle Monae to me--this woman's voice sounds much huskier...

Articles up about it at the Stereogum, Rolling Stone websites. The Rolling Stone piece says the new Time album will feature Prince's songwriting. Probably old news - new to me, though.
I'm not diggin' this song one one-hundreth as much as I did Cause & Affect. His vocals sound like he was completely disinterested. Like he was twiddling nobs thinking about something else at the same time he laid down those tracks. And dang it! I miss the days of 75 layers of Prince singing with himself. It's one of the things that made his music sound so different and he rarely gets anywhere near even attempting it these days. Meh, weak sauce, this one. Not even inspired to listen to it again right now.

From Rolling Stone.com In other Prince-related news, the original members of the Time — the funk band fronted by Morris Day, Prince's adversary in Purple Rain — will reunite again (they last reformed for the 2008 Grammy Awards) to release their fifth album, their first since 1990's Pandemonium. Due out later this year, the Time's new disc will nearly coincide with the 30th anniversary of their self-titled Prince-penned debut album, which could lead to some reissues as well, Billboard reports. Like Vanity 6, Apollonia 6 and the Family, the Time at first served as an outlet for Prince to write new music for bands he created and controlled under the terms of his Warner Bros. contract. Under Prince's tutelage, and thanks to Purple Rain, Morris Day and the Time had hits with "Jungle Love" and "The Bird." It's unclear whether the Time's new album, their first in two decades, will feature Prince's songwriting once again. The Time also plan to tour in support of their new disc.
Sorry, you're wrong Cerebrus.
