Just fun...nothing ethereal. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Sounds like Janelle Monáe on the co-lead vocals. During the first listen i thought "oh yikes, another 'chelsea rogers' type track with a female lead and little or no real prince vocals".
But on second listen i've started thinking the woman singing is Janelle Monáe, so that redeems the entire track for me right there. From now on it's a Janelle track with Prince on backing vox. cuz, come on, let's be honest here, it's not like you can hear prince except for on headphones and in a few lines anyway.
It would fit with it being a one off track. She was at the park recently and they'll have used the chance to lay down a few tracks, knowing prince.
With it being a one off, released to radio as a promo, he doesn't really have to provide any credits for the song so wether it's her or not, likely won't be talked about by either side since there are probably contractual obligations etc etc.
He probably thought the song to be so nice and breezy and cool that he wanted to release it right now instead of sticking it in the vault with all the others.
As a new Prince track tho, i think it's dull and too much like older songs. "Shake" is the one most obvious with that keyboard line.
But looking at this, listening to it and thinking what it's like to be Prince and just have the opportunity to record whenever you want with whomever you want, it makes the track more interesting for me. Imagining Prince and Janelle in the studio recording it seems like a nice thought. If it is her, anyway. Tho it sure is strikingly much like her voice.

If we're "being honest here", then that statement isn't true until we hear from Prince or Janelle.
Just sayin'. | |

Is there no one at your station who listened to this track and said "guys, I think he's punking us?"
I'm sorry, but I'm supposed to believe that you and him talked about new music (which includes the ridiculously overrated Janelle Monáe) and then this is the track he hands you guys? And you actually play it on your station? © Bart Van Hemelen

if you actually read what i said, like you are so fond of telling people who respond to anything you write, you would already know that this is just what i believe, not what i'm telling other people is true or what they should believe.
just sayin.

Why wouldn't someone at the station have been able to talk to Prince? As if Prince has never spoken to a radio station person before, or a journalist, or a program director? It's a nonsensical question, and should be considered rhetorical.
It's not a bad song. It's just a pop song, nothing more. It's the same vein as "Cream" or "Guitar", etc.
No one's yet confirmed it's Janelle on it, but it'd be nice if it was her. She's not overrated, but she is a lot more original than 95% of the shit out there right now in R&B and Soul. She's at least thinking about what she's trying to do, instead of doing it just for the sake of it.
No one is punking anyone.

you seem to suffer from the same syndrome as ernest, bot of you are so anxious for someone to step on your dicks that you read whatever you're currently soap boxing about in any given reply.
i said i like it if i consider it a janelle track. if i have to take this for what it actually is, a new prince track, be it a promo for a future project or just a one off tune, it's nowhere near any of his better efforts.
that means i don't hate the song, i think it's quite ok, but for a new prince tune, it's just not something he should be proud to release.

lol at Monae being 95% orginal, LOL ever heard of Outkast, Joi, DF, Cee Lo, Andre 3stacks, Organized Noise, Sleppy Brown, LOL - She is overrated, she wasn;t thinking about anything, she just following the ATL sound thats been done 10 years ago, yall just forgot
as far as Hot Summer, it is a pop song with alot of syrup, thats what it is, whats the problem?

Don't split hairs with me. You said "From now on it's a Janelle trackwith Prince on backing vox. cuz, come on, let's be honest here, it's not like you can hear prince except for on headphones and in a few lines anyway." which is ridiculous. So just because you can't hear Prince much, it's just not his song. End of story. It's just not. It's his name on it, and he played on it, and wrote it. But it's not his track. It's like saying Kevin Bacon wasn't in Footloose because it was only silhouette in some shots, so it could have been anyone.
No one has yet said it's her on the track. It'd be great if it was her; I like her. Yet if she's not, you're pretty much moving with blinders on, aren't you? Yes, no? It sounds more like Shelby J., but time will tell.
Can you imagine someone saying, "Justin Timberlake used some of the Minneapolis sound on 'Sexy Ladies', so I'm just going to consider that a track from The Time." See how silly that sounds? You're probably giving me the eye as you read that, but what's good for the goose.
Yes, ou can believe what you want, but why wallow in an untruth? Is it so bad if it is Shelby J. on the track?

look, i'll be honest with you, i just don't like you. i didn't read beyond the "don't split hair with me" bit, since that already made me feel queezy.
i've taken to not reading your replies to anything anymore since it saves me a lot of aggro, but in this case you quoted me so i thought i'd reply.
but do us both a favor and pretend i don't exist, and i'll continue to do the same for you from now on.

The song is okay for what it is - a free give-away. If he were to include it on any album or charge for it - no thank you.
Still, I'd rather have this as a summer song, and it's a pop song too:

Since you can't read, I'll retype what I said, just for you: "She's not overrated, but she is a lot more original than 95% of the shit out there right now in R&B and Soul. She's at least thinking about what she's trying to do, instead of doing it just for the sake of it."
Outkast isn't out there right now. But in fact, Big Boi worked on her album, while you're trampling on facts vs. fiction - remember that. No one forgot about anything. If it's the Atlanta sound that you want to box her into, then she is doing the Atlanta sound 10x better than anyone you listed. How is she 'over rated' anyway? She's getting attention, and it's well-deserved.
She's making stuff that's a lot more original than people in the Top 20 right now like Rihanna, Usher, Black Eyed Peas, Drake, Ke$ha, T.I., Taio Cruz, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Ciara, Alicia Keys, Trey Songz, Jamie Foxx, and a dozen others.

Then sod off. Did that make you queezy too? I can see it's pointless to even try to approach as a human being, much less a music fan.
If you can't defend what you said, then don't say it. You got called out, and now you're trying to make it personal. Very grown up of you. I never attacked YOU, I challenged your statement. Aww, did that make you queezy too? Need some Tums? Here:

And yeah, you read it. You'll save face by saying you didn't. But you did. You know it, and I know it, even as you will continue to deny it until your dying breath.

I wouldn't call them samples, but I never thought about "Shake!". That kind of keyboard hit isn't new in Prince's music, and certainly not in music in general. "Cream" has the same keyboard style in it. Even "The Beautiful Ones", which is a lot slower, has the same basic riff. I guess that almost always makes for a cool and catchy song, because even though it's familiar, it's still new.

Ernest, Lars has already stated he's only stating an opinion. I fail to see what exactly he needs to defend, nor why you're flame baiting at this point.
You should train your keen rhetorical smack-downs to those who deserve it: Tame, Genesia, Johnart, Dave1992, 2the9s, nursev, evenstar3, tinaz, and me.
